George's absence from the family group sheet leads me to believe he was not a sibling? Try emailing the tree's owner for more information. Sometimes, people have more information than they care to reveal publically. I, personally, don't have a clue about George's parentage. Methinks that information will have to come from family bibles, wills, deeds, etal?

Thanks. I've been looking at this clue (and it's a good one!). I went to Elizabeth's parents' page and didn't see a George listed, though. Did I miss something here or on a related page? What leads you to say that George & Elizabeth might have been cousins? Do you have any idea the name of his father/mother? Interested to hear from you again. Thanks again for all your help & support.
Roy

Live approximately 1600 miles, as the crow flies, from Jefferson, TX. A native Texan, I return at least four times yearly to "terrorize" the county clerks of East Texas (lol). Available Texas Death Certificates are viewable courtesy of the Family History Library. http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start Someone was responding to inquiries as a member of the county genealogical society. Unsure if they are active?

Reviewed your earlier messages and did a little research. Not too organized, though! Found death certificates for Sudye A. Dunn (17 Apr 1864 - 20 Apr 1947) [possibly Susan from 1870 Harrison?] and John A. Wood (Oct 1859 - 23 Sep 1935). Parents listed as George Washington Wood and Susan Cameron. Oddly, Alabama listed as native-state for George. That's consistent with information from F. M. Wood's (1856 - 26 Mar 1921) death certificate. Do you have a family tree viewable online? Seems many descendants of Francis Marion Wood were buried in Oakwood Cemetery?

Sorry. I do appreciate your help. Here's what I know, think I know, and don't know...

Know:
George Washington Wood, b. 27 Jan 1825, Tallapoosa, GA, d. 25 Oct 1891, Marion Co, TX.
married 4 Aug 1853 to Susan Adeline Cameron b. 18 Nov 1833, Troup GA, d. 10 Nov 1892 Harrison Co., TX.
11 Children, including my GGFather Francis Marion Wood

Think I Know:
Sister Elizabeth Adeline Wood Mapp, b. 25 Apr 1820, d. 31 Jul 1895. Married to J.D. Mapp. See George Wood living with Mapp family on 1850 Census Tallapoosa Co, AL fed census.
On 1860 fed census for Tallapoosa, AL, see GW Wood family with older female, Martha Wood b. abt 1796, and younger man Allen H. Wood, b. abt 1838. I'm guessing that Martha might have been GW's mother and Allen might be a younger brother.

I checked your suggestion of the George W Wood in FamilySearch. His birth of abt 1826 in GA is about right. There is no spouse or children listed for GW, so there's no other data to tell if he's the right one on that account. Older sister Elizabeth looks good, but her birth listed 1800/1810 looks at least 10 years too early from the Mapp record birth in 1820. Also, her listed middle initial here is "I", rather than "A." Her husband in the FamilySearch record is Richardson Blake, not JD Mapp. The mother's name is Mary, not Martha, and there is no brother Allen listed.

Granted, I cannot be sure whether the GW who lived with Elizabeth Mapp is mine. I can't be sure, either, whether the Martha and Allen living with my GW in 1860 is mother and brother. So, the GW in the FamilySearch MIGHT be mine, but, as I said in my earlier post, it is difficult to reconcile with the other snippets of information I have.

I won't discard the FamilySearch information, and I'm certainly appreciative of the pointer to that data. I hope the additional information I provided might be helpful to you and others trying to assist. Thanks.
Roy

GW Wood is my GG Grandfather. I've been trying to find information about GW Wood's parents as well. I hit the wall a few years ago. One lead was in the 1850 Census for Tallapoosa Co, AL, George is listed as living with Elizabeth Mapp and her family. I assume from this, that Elizabeth is George's sister. She was born in GA on July 31, 1895. Her husband's name was J.D. Mapp. I haven't gotten beyond that.

I would love to hear if you make any breakthroughs.
Roy Wood

My husband's ancestors were Henry & Polly Jackson. The Greenwood Cemetery is located on the land that was their homeplace in 1850-1875. I have been to the cemetery twice and agree that something needs to be done so that it will not disappear from existence. We talked with the man that now owns the land (June, 2009) and he said that the cemetery is 3 acres and that we could somehow mark its whereabouts. There are at least 60-70 graves there. My husband's plan is to GPS its location. I am researching the Historic Texas Cemetery guidelines to see what can be done.

Thanks again for additional info. I will have to keep in mind that William Tyler was included in the census of 1860 with Francis Tyler and family while they were in Titus Co, Texas, ost office of Dangerfield. In 1870 he is no longer with them and they are in Marion Co. Texas, post office, Jefferson. This means, of course, that he died somewhere between these two times. I have no way to know when they moved. I will perhaps zero in on Titus Co.There could be the chance that his body was taken back to Jasper Co Ga. He could be in your area, but no name on the tombstone or in Titus Co Area. I'll keep looking. You have been so helpful. Thanks again.... Gloria Tyler Taylor

I have considerable interest in Peter DRISKILL during his time is Alabama. I have it as a matter of record that Peter DRISKILL owned a slave named Mary A. LEWIS (aka Mary FITZPATRICK). Mary lived in Macon Co., when Peter DRISKILL lived in that county, she remaining there after the CW, and she died there. But, I have frequently had the thought that Mary came with Peter to Macon, when he moved there from Loundes Co., AL. Could Mary A. first have been property of Dixon H. LEWIS (or another LEWIS), of Loundes Co. at one time? Was Peter related to Rev. Ambrose DRISKILL, the Methodist minister, also found in Loundes? Any light that anyone can shed of Peter DRISKILL, his source, his family, and his various migrations will be greatly appreciated, since understanding this family will better enable me to learn more about the slave Mary A. LEWIS (FITZPATRICK).

In Macon County, AL, collateral research on Mary A. relates to these surnames: FITZPATRICK/WALTON/ROWELL, and HARWELL/JONES/ROBERTSON ... TRUIT/BASCOVILLE. Anyone researching these families can contact me directly at this e-mail address: AMcLane101@mac.com. Thanks.

Are you related to the Fenns? I noticed you have some posts about Glovers. A sister to Flora, Helen married a Galbreath and I think they had relatives by the name of Glover, in the Mansfield, LA area. I have so much missing information on the family. I have pictures that Grandma Etta had and we don't know who they are.

Thanks,
Grace Foster

The Rev. Ambrose Driskill/Driskell was the son of John Driskill and his wife Mary (maybe Kilpatrick, there is some question regarding Mary's surname).

John came to AL (ca 1830)by way of Franklin Co., TN where he lived for a number of years...see 1820 census. Originally he was from Rutherford Co., NC. John died in Madison Co., AL, his will as follows:

Madison Co., AL
Will Book 1, page 32-34
Dated: Aug 13, 1853

To my wife Mary, my negro woman Alcey and my horse and buggy. At the death of my wife Mary Driskell, the negro woman Alcey and the horse and buggy are to be sold and after paying burial expenses and $200.00 to satisfy a note that my son Ambrose F. Driskill holds against me, the balance of the proceeds to be equally divided among my lawful heirs to wit: Martha Goodwin, Ambrose F. Driskill, Lucinda Prater, John Dickson, the son of Martha Dickson, Eliza M. Nash, Elizabeth M. Ogletree and Issac K. L. Driskell.
Signed: John Driskill
Witnesses: William H. Sims, James H. Province
Acknowledged: Jan 11, 1854
Recorded: Feb 7, 1854

To date, no connection has been found between John and Peter Driskell. Actually, Peter & Allen Driskell both show up in AL about the same time. Both left some evidence linking them to Hancock Co., GA.

Hi Ted,
Hope you receive this query. I along with two other have been researching the descendants of John Gordon BENNETT and wife Martha J. CABLE, who started out in Scioto Co., OH., migrated to Massac Co., IL., with a stop off in TN. it appears then settled in Cass and Marion Co., TX. Their children born between 1852-1867included:
1.Sarah F./Serefhina
2.Amelia Frances
3.Alvin Benton marr. Minnie RYE
4.Emerson Waldo marr. Jimmie/Jennie HART
5.Horace
6.Samuel A. marr. Sallie Ann Scott CATES
7.Charles Oscar marr. annie BEAUCHAMP
8.George W.

Down Charles Oscar's line he had among his children a son Theodore Roosevelt "Ted" who married Gladys Mae DELISE 23 July 1924 probably in Marion Co., TX. or Cass Co., TX.

Would you happen to be from this branch?

Would like to hear back from you and others who connect to this Bennett family in Cass and Marion Co., TX., surely most if not all are related.

Judi Burkhardt
judiburkhardt@comcast.net if anyone wants to email me direct.

Other family trees state he died 25 Oct 1891 at The Cedars Plantation in Marion County. I can't find any information other than the index to the probate. Can anyone help me get confirmation. I've reached a dead end with him and it's driving me crazy. He was born 27 Jan 1825 in Georgia. He was married to Susan Cameron, moved to Harrison Co. Tx between 1860 & 1870, is listed in Precinct 6 in Marion Co on the 1880 census. I'm trying to confirm his siblings and parents.

My initial search was very positive! Harmon Beecher Wood (1 May 1859 - 12 Oct 1928) was Robert Harmon Wood's father. Find father, mother, and three sons in 1900 AL-Cullman-Holmes Gap-District 59-Image 2. In 1910 TX-Smith-Precinct 7-District 88-Image 6, R. H. Wood was boarding in the home of H. J. Pettzer. A puzzlement? There are two Harrison County-births (11 Jun 1941 & 11 Dec 1941) listing Robert H. Wood and Mary Louise Holmes as parents?

I thank you for this great information. I am sure that the first of your response has listed the children of the Francis (Frank)Tyler and his wife listed as A.B. in the 1860 census. What is interesting is the Franklin Thomas Tyler and the Carrie Avrilla Tyler (nee)that have the similar names but the date of their births not compatable with the older couple. Would you give me the name of the cemetery as I would like to also find the grave of my William Tyler, father of this Francis,he was 77 in the 1860 census of Titus Co,Tx.He could be there as well. Thanks Again, Gloria

There is a limited one on the Marion County Web Site.

All of the Marriage books at the County Clerk's office have an index in the front of the book. The books are generally in 10 year segments.

I have transcribed the marriage records from 1860 thru' 1926 and have them in alphabetical order.

Any records prior to 1860 would be in Cass County.

Don McLatchie, President
Marion County Genealogical Society
