San Miguel Cemetery

My grandmother passed away in Cross Texas at a Ranch we believe it was either the Franklin Ranch House or the Henry Ranch house. My grandfather worked for both the Franklins and Henrys at different points. His name was Mercedes "Merce" Martinez (son of Gabriel Martinez who also worked for the families). His wife died in childbirth in his employer's home both she and the baby passed. She was buried next to her father Nicasio Herrera in San Miguel Cemetery in unmarked graves. My mother remembers that she visited the graves with Merce about 40 years ago, at that time, only Nicasio's grave was sunken; now I found a couple of sunken unmarked graves today and wonder if anyone can validate that it is theirs. My family never placed headstones and I would like to if I can verify the graves. As soon as you walk in the cemetery, to the left, there are two sunken graves side by side. To the left of these graves is another grave with a footstone (no headstone) that says "Magoo or Mancoo". If anyone can remember my family or the story of my grandmothers death that may have attended the funeral, any information would be greatly appreciated. She and her baby died in 1942. Her name was Juanita (Herrera) Martinez.

I am trying to find Tilden City Cemetery. Unable to find any record on the internet, thinking perhaps the name has changed.

Was hoping to add listing for William Garrett Luce to Findagrave.com. Death certificate (issued 1969) indicates he was buried there.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am especially interested in Thomas Preston Franklin and Martha Agnes DeVilbiss Franklin, my great-grandparents. I think they are buried in San Miguel. If you could send those two I would be very grateful.

I went yesterday (27 Mar 2010) and took pictures of all the headstones in San Miguel Cemetery. I'm in the process of posting many of them to my family tree on Ancestry.com. I'm also willing to share any of these pictures. If you want a copy just send me your e-mail address and the name of the individual.
I'm distantly related to the Franklins buried in the cemetery.

I did a search and found the following page from Beeville, Texas for Cemetery Associations. There is a listing for Hill Top Cemetery with two contacts and phone numbers. You might give those phone numbers a try. Also, if you call the McMullen County clerk and ask about the Hill Top Cemetery association they may also be able to tell you who to get in contact with that has a list of burials.

http://www.beeville.net/Cemetery/Cemetery_Associations.htm

Renee Smelley
IRSmelley2@aol.com

I have updated information on this case. McMullen Co deputy sheriff John T. MORGAN and three possemen attempted to arrest Lucio PEREZ who had cut a youth on the face at a fandango in Tilden on 23 Feb 1894. PEREZ shot MORGAN in the breast and the bullet lodged near his spine. PEREZ was killed in the exchange. MORGAN died on 15 March 1894. He was survived by his wife Lavanthan MORGAN and ten children. She died in 1928 in Tilden. I believe they are buried in the Hilltop Cemetery and need confirmation, whether he has a marker, and the inscription if any.

Here is what I found on John. Gives his age and that he was wounded. Does that fit your John Hill.

1st. Sgt. John Hill enlisted in Capt. Donelson’s Mounted
Volunteers on September 23, 1861 at Ft. Brown Texas. He was 40
years old at that time. The Cavalry set a value of
$ 60.00 on his horse and $ 15.00 on his personal equipment.

Muster Roll dated January 1862 shows that he is due his regular
pay from enlistment. He is at this time paid $ 39.20 for the use
of his horse.

Muster Roll dated February 1862 notes that he is on Detached
Service escorting prisoners to San Antonio.

Muster Roll of October 1862 shows that he is paid $ 24.40 for the
use of his horse. His horse is now valued at $ 100.00 and his
equipment at $ 70.00

Register Card - " Discharged on April 23, 1863." He is paid $ 72.00

by Capt. Mi
His discharge notes that he was severely wounded in the right
shoulder on August 10, 1863 while on duty on the Nueces River near Ft. Clark. His discharge notes that he is 5’ 11’ tall, blond complexion and blue eyes. His occupation before enlisting is a
farmer.

Do you know how the Vandyke's related to them? Samuel Bruce's first marriage was to Nancy M VanDyke in Dec 1857. A relation between the ones listed in the census and Nancy could explain why he was living with the family later on.

Thanks
In the 1860 Census of Lavaca County, Serena Abercrombie is listed with her children J., Eliza, Mary, and Sally. Living with them is Samuel Marion Bruce, who later married Eliza and settled eventually in Wilson County. When you look through the census records, wherever you find Samuel and Eliza, you find Serena either on the same page or one before or after.

Samuel Bruce and Eliza Abercrombie married in Dewitt Co, 25 Dec 1860, (his second marriage)
Serena Abercrombie married John Hill in Atascosa Tx, 14 Nov 1865

John Hill and Samuel Bruce are listed together in the McMullen County State Troops during the Civil War in 1864

I’ve been told by family members that Serena’s first husbands name was Wiley Abercrombie, no one knows what her maiden name is yet. I've not been able to verify it yet. My husband descends from Samuel Bruce’s son Robert Lee Bruce in Atascosa County.
I have info on McMullen Co. Deputy Sheriff who was also suppose to be a Deputy U.S. Marshall, John T. Morgan.. According to the McMullen County History Book, on Feb 1, 1894, Morgan was called to a dance for a stabbing . When he tried to make the arrest he was stabbed by Lucio Perez. He died on Feb 15, 1894 of his wounds. Do you have any information on this??? It may fit the criteria to have his name placed on the Texas Peace Officer Memorial. Thanks, Kyle Coleman

My father's grandmother was Jennie Franklin Carter. Her Franklin relatives, "my cousins", lived on a farm in Three Rivers area of McMullen Co. He visited it ca 1927 at the age of 7. "It was a large victorian white home with beveled glass windows...They raised polo ponies and calvary horses. They also mined mica and chalk on the ranch..." I am having trouble tracing our Franklins. Does anyone know of this farm or the Franklins??

Amanda Dunn Cude wrote notes on the burial location of both her parents, Cynthia and John Dunn. She wrote that Cynthia was buried in Tilden, McMullen County, Texas. If Cynthia was actually buried in Tilden then most likely it was Hill Top Cemetery, but without a headstone.

http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~yarbrough/archives/ge...

Beth and I have also discussed the possibility that Cynthia was buried in the Yarbrough Cemetery at Yarbrough Bend near Tilden since Cynthia does fit the age category of a female buried there. In 1982 the Yarbrough cemetery was relocated to Hill Top Cemetery.

http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~yarbrough/archives/ge...

In the McMullen County History Book under Sam and Andrea Heritage I find the following information on pages 47 - 48.

Sam Heritage, Jr. married Francisca Ibanez

The children of Sam and Francisca were:
Manuel, Juan, Andrea, Samuel, Jova, Catarina, & Dorotaeo and also contains their spouses names. It says that Dorotaeo's family are the only ones now living in McMullen County. I think that the book was done in 1981. There are no dates for any of these people, but the Sam that married Andrea was a confederate veteran who came to McMullen County either just before the war or shortly after. Also doesn't say if Francisca remarried.

If you would like a scann of the pages that contain this Heritage information let me know.

Renee Smelley
CC McMullen County TXGenWeb
http://www.rootsweb.com/~txmcmull

Does anyone have any information regarding Alexander Murphy who married Elizabeth "Lizzie" McKinney about 1852 and moved to McMullen County around 1880? They raised my g-grandfather James Allen Kidd. Any help would be most appreciative. Thanks so much.

Glenda Damron
gsdamron@gvtc.com

FRANKLINS OF TILDEN

Have been searching for several years for the date and place of death for Silas Ralph FRANKLIN, b. March 1865 in Tilden, McMullen County, TX.son of Benjamin & Mary Jane (DRAKE) FRANKLIN.

Silas Ralph Franklin left Texas ca. 1890's, and as the story goes, he was the black sheep of the family. His father gave him several head of cattle and told him to get out of Texas. He married Minnie E. SMITH on Oct 7, 1890 in Pocatello ID. From there they moved to Montana. Silas and Minnie had several children, were divorced and Silas married Fannie OLDENCAMP. They had two children and were also later divorced. Last known residence for Silas Ralph FRANKLIN was Glacier Co. MT, town of Glacier Park, 1920 Federal Census. Silas was living alone. What happened to him after 1920????

Silas had siblings, Nancy Jane, James A., Benjamin (Eraf), Jefferson (Jeff)., Wiley Ripley, Addie and Lillie Franklin. His father Benjamin was married twice. 2nd wife was Sarah (Sallie) ROEBUCK. They had one son Otto Franklin.

Would like to exchange information with any descendants of the above siblings.
