Docken Jr., Edsel Ardean "Dean"

Edsel Ardean "Dean" Docken, Jr., a bank executive and avid golfer, died suddenly of a heart attack on Thursday, August 10, 2006, at his Hunt Valley, Maryland home. He was 50. The son of a career Army officer, Mr. Docken was born in Heidelberg, Germany. According to his wife of 10 years, Susan Baker Docken, formerly of Midland, he was raised in Kentucky, Texas, and Maryland.

Mr. Docken earned a bachelor's degree in political science and history in 1979 from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he played lacrosse, rowed crew, and was an active member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Mr. Docken began his career in 1978 with the First National Bank of Maryland and from 1985 to 1987 was responsible for managing lending activities for 17 of its branch banks. He was promoted in 1987 to Vice President in the Bank's Commercial Finance Division. He left First National in 1993 to become Vice President of the Commercial and Real Estate Lending Group at the Bank of Maryland in Towson, Maryland. He was Vice President of Commercial Lending at The Columbia Bank in Lutherville, Maryland from 1998 until 2004 and, for the past two years, held a similar position at Chevy Chase Bank in Bethesda, Maryland.

Since 1998, Mr. Docken had been a Board Member of the Greater Towson Committee and, over the past 14 years, had supported the activities of The Junior League of Baltimore, where his wife had been a Board Member. He regularly played in charity golf outings and preferred to use the classic persimmon wood drivers rather than metal clubs. Mr. Docken collected golf balls from the courses he played and had his home office decorated with golf memorabilia, including a signed print of his favorite golf pro, Arnold Palmer. A gourmet cook who favored preparing Italian cuisine for family and friends, Mr. Docken was also known for his marinated steaks that he slowly grilled over charcoal fires, usually while entertaining guests with his imaginative storytelling.

A devoted father, Mr. Docken took time out of his busy schedule to read to the children at his two young daughters' preschool and to serve as a chaperone on numerous school fieldtrips. His favorite activity, however, was spending time with his wife and two daughters, Lindsay E. Docken, 6, and Alexandra B. "Lexi" Docken, 4. The family traveled annually to play in the water and sand at the Outer Banks, NC and to Chapel Hill, NC for UNC football games, as well as taking day and weekend trips to the surrounding areas. Lindsay and Lexi learned how to play lacrosse and soccer from Daddy and also acquired his love of cooking, which led to many family picnics in the backyard.

Also surviving are his parents, LTC (Ret) E. A. "Dean" Docken, Sr. and H. Jane Docken of Churchville, MD; sister Robin J. Klinges and her husband Ted of Haverford, PA; parents-in-law C. Harvey and J'Nell Baker Carr of Midland, TX; sister-in-law Sara Carr Newsom and her husband Len of Austin, TX; sister-in-law Cindy B. Miller and her husband Bob of Frederick, MD; sister-in-law Dr. Susie Chandler and her husband Mark of Midland, TX; brother-in-law W. Hank Baker and his wife Hollie of Tyler, TX; and sister-in-law Terri E. Carr of Midland, TX. Mr. Docken was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, Maryland, where services were held on August 14, 2006.

There she met and married Calvin W. White on April 12, 1943. The family moved to Midland, Texas in 1959 where she resided until her death. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, an avid bowler and spent a lot of her time helping raise her grandchildren and great grandchildren who affectionately called her "Mimi."

Everyone who knew Carol was familiar with "The White House." From the moment you stepped through the door, you were treated as an honored guest at the "official" White House. "Grab yourself something to drink and pull up a chair" is the greeting. Next, you get the aroma of a home cooked meal complete with homemade bread. The guests were ushered to the kitchen and handed a plate to get in line behind the Patriarch "Papa Moose." After Mimi made sure you had enough to eat, you were invited to join in the White's round table discussion. Everyone at Mimi's table was made to feel a part of the group. All families have their ups and downs, but we hope everyone has a "White House" in their life. Thank you, Mimi!
