Heap Jr., Harry Herbert "Hub"

Harry "Hub" Herbert Heap Jr., 88, of Odessa, left this earth to meet his maker on Monday, Dec. 11, 2006. Hub was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Eureka, Kan., and went on to graduate from Tulsa Central High School in Tulsa, Okla.

As a young man, Hub's love of sports led him to meet the love of his life. While playing softball in Denver City, Texas, he hit a homerun that landed near a dark-haired beauty. Billie Kirby threw the ball back onto the field and hit him in the shin, sparking a romance that spanned more than six decades. He and Billie married Jan. 31, 1941, in the town where they met.

Hub was a technical sergeant in the United States Army, and served in three major theaters during World War II. He and his wife moved to West Texas in 1938 with the dream of beginning their own company. In order to start the business, the Heaps had to live somewhere inexpensive, so they moved into the barracks at Midland airport for $5 a month.

In 1948, Hub founded Heap Equipment, an oil field specialty company that he and his family expanded to include stores in Odessa as well as Hobbs, N.M., and Weatherford, Texas. With his easy smile and gentle spirit, Hub was a talented salesman and cherished friend.

Hub was proud to support the Boy Scouts of America and the deaf community, and could often be seen in the bleachers at local sporting events. He faithfully contributed to baseball, basketball, football, and track programs for both Permian and Odessa High School teams.

Hub was a member of the Masonic Lodge #955, and was a charter member several groups, including the First Methodist Church of Midland, the Odessa Country Club, and the American Quarter Horse Association. He exhibited at the Permian Basin Oil Show from its inception.

Although he was a dedicated businessman, he was also known for his amazing ability to grill a hotdog that tasted like filet mignon. Hub dedicated his life to supporting his family, and he was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

During the last 18 months of his life, Hub spent much of his time alongside his beloved wife, visiting her faithfully at Parks Methodist Retirement Village, where she is currently an Alzheimer's patient.

Hub is survived by his wife, Billie; his sons, Harry Heap, of White Oak, Texas, and Craig Heap, of Odessa; his daughter, Marsha Fairchild, of Midland; his brother, Raymond Paul Heap, of Brentwood, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at Temple Baptist Church. Masonic graveside services will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
