Brown, Gordon W.

Gordon Wonnacott Brown, age 92 of Manhattan, died Monday, January 15, 2007 at his residence.

He was born on May 20, 1914 in Coffeyville, KS, the son of Thomas and Elva (Mark) Brown.

On February 12, 1942 in Manhattan, KS, he was united in marriage to Ollie Frances Fuller. She preceded him in death on April 30, 2004.

Gordon graduated from Kansas State University with three engineering degrees that were essential during his time in the military. With the attack on Pearl Harbor, Gordon was called to active duty as a commissioned officer in the Signal Corps of the U.S. Army. Because of his academic achievements and employment with Halliburton, he was given the command of a unique radar company. Radar technology was then new and extreme revolutionary concept which required personnel with a high degree of electronic skills and training. In 1942 the unit was moved to Australia and placed under the command of General MacArthur in preparation for his push through the South Pacific, New Guinea, Phillippines and to Japan. Gordon continued to command through WWII, having attained the rank of Major. His service was of singular credit to himself, his command and the U.S. Army.

After WWII, he was a highway contractor and owned and operated Brown Brothers Construction with his brothers, Sealy and Thomas Brown until 1957. They then reformed the company to be only Gordon and Thomas. Brown Brothers Construction worked on the Kansas Turnpike, Tuttle Creek Dam and most state lakes around Kansas.

He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, Elks Lodge, Sertoma International, Kansas State University Alumni Association, Kansas Contractor's Association, Manhattan Country Club and Stagg Hill Golf Course. He loved golf in retirement and even landed a hole in one at Del Rio, TX.

He is survived by one daughter, Nancy McNerney and her husband, Charles of Midland, TX; one son, Thomas G. Brown of Columbia, SC; one brother, Thomas Brown of Manhattan; one sister, Elizabeth Scott of Urbana, IL; two grandchildren, Robyn Winslett of Mobile, AL and Robert White of New York, NY and one great-granddaughter, Callie Farris of Lubbock, TX.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Sealy Brown.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday January 22, 2007 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Rev. R.C. McConnell officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen.

Online condolences may be left for the family through our website at www.ymlfuneralhome.com.

A memorial has been established Meals on Wheels. Memorial contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502.

Dean Alexander Watson, M.D., of Midland, passed away on January 19, 2007.

Dean was born in Llano, Texas, on July 28, 1950, to Kelsie Alexander Watson and Helen Raines Watson. His family then moved to Killeen, Texas, where he attended primary and middle school. At age 15, he moved with his family to Austin, Texas, where he graduated from Reagan High School in 1968. Dean attended the University of Texas at Austin as a pre-med student and a member of the UT track team. He graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1974, and completed his internship at the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, in 1975. While there, he also served as Chief of Staff at Ballinger Memorial Hospital, and was a member of the Ballinger Noon Lions Club. He married Barbara Brook Coker on Valentines Day, 1986 at the First United Methodist Church in Ballinger. A date Dean chose as it would always be easy to remember their anniversary.

Dr. Watson and his new family moved to Midland in 1989, where he began practicing as part of a group family practice clinic. In 2001, he opened his private practice in Midland which has remained open throughout his illness thanks to the dedication of his wonderful staff and locum tenens doctors. Dean has been a member of the Midland Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, the American Medical Association and the First United Methodist Church.

Dean had a keen interest in the history of Texas, including the Lost Jim Bowie Mine and the Indian silver mines of the Texas Hill Country. Enchanted Rock was a favorite hiking and camping site for Dean and his family throughout the years. He showed much love and care for each of his family members and staff, actively providing for their health and safety in many ways. Dean also dearly loved his pets; no stray animal was ever turned away from his home. He nurtured them all whether furry or feathered. Dean was an avid student of the Bible, as well as world history, and he closely followed current world political trends.

Elliott, Sandra N.

Sandra Lou Newton Elliott was born June 13, 1946 to Ida Ruth Riley Newton and Ariel Estus Newton in San Angelo. She went to live with her Savior on January 22, 2007. Sandra resided in Sonora, Texas, during her childhood, and the day after her 9th birthday, her father passed away. She and her mother moved to Midland, Texas in 1959. She graduated from Lee High School in 1964 and married Carl Deaune Elliott on June 20, 1964. To this union two children were born, E. Ariel and Alicia Ruth.

Sandra entered the world of business in 1971 and was employed by four companies in positions ranging from Accounts Receivable Secretary, Benefits Manager, and Office Manager. In 1986 she was employed by Reed and Associates which later became Arcadis. At the time of her death she had been employed as Office Manager at Arcadis for over 20 years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Ezekiel Sunday School class. Sandra was also very active in her community as a volunteer. She graduated from Leadership Midland and chaired the Junior Leadership Midland program for a few years. She served on the Boards for Centers for Children and Families and the Midland Chamber of Commerce. She never thought of herself until after both of her children had graduated from college. College graduation was always her number one goal for Ariel and Alicia. And after Ariel graduated from college it did not take long for her to help him find a wife. A blind date set up by Sandra led to the marriage of Ariel and Shay. For the past ten years, she spent many hours with her grandsons, Brandon and Blake, swimming, watching ball games, and playing. She also found many opportunities to shop for them as well.
