Short, Geneva Ruth (McGehee)
Geneva Ruth (McGehee) Short
Geneva Ruth (McGehee) Short died February 18, 2007 in Selah, Wa.
Geneva was born December 5, 1916, in Loraine, Mitchell County, Texas to Lillie Ruth (Kidd) McGehee and Andrew McGehee. She attended schools in Loraine, ultimately graduating from Tom S. Lubbock High School in Lubbock, Texas. She was a gifted musician, excelling by winning first place in voice competition in Dallas, Texas - State Honors. In addition she played the piano for various glee clubs and choral groups in Lubbock, Texas, while a high school senior. Her love of music remained throughout her life.
She married George Lester Parker in 1941, bringing with her a son, Donald Andrew (Andy), who was adopted by G.L. Parker. They had two children Jimmy Edwin and Georgia Ruth (Parker) Thompson. Jimmy died in 1946.
She loved the beauty of God's creation. She loved her Lord. She enjoyed her friends of which there are many. She played bridge often, enjoyed a good party, cared for her animals, birds, garden, and yard with gusto. She nurtured a small wild apricot seedling into a potentially patentable variety.
Her being a Texan included growing up in the dry, windy, thorny, snake-infested part of West Texas. On August 27, 1969, she married Lester M. Short in Midland, Texas. Living near downtown, her garden was so important that they drilled a water well in the yard, only to hit salt water but no oil. Nevertheless, her yard was a thing of beauty filled with flowers, pecan trees, and one desert tortoise.
Lester Short died in 1976. In 1989 she placed her belongings on a moving van, loaded the car with her cat and dog, and headed west. In Los Angeles she asked for directions, ending up in Selah, Washington, to be near her daughter, Georgia, to make her home and new friends.
Geneva enjoyed life. She continued learning every day. Her curious mind knew no bounds. She traveled, and enjoyed what she did with an optimistic, upbeat attitude. She will be missed by her friends and family. We are all better for having known her. Her love of Jesus is now rewarded by being in His presence perhaps singing in the choir.
A memorial service was held on Thursday, February 22 at 2:00 pm at The Cross Church 1019 Cornell Avenue, Yakima. Everyone was invited to attend.
