Minutes from Mt. Zion Baptist Church, in Amite Co. Mississippi indicate that John and wife Chloe joined the church by transfer of letter. John's parents, Cornelius and Rebecca Whittington, were charter members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in 1811.

John Whittington is listed in the Census of the Inhabitants of the Natchez District 1816 in Amite Co.

Records often maintain that John W. Whittington, husband of Chloe Mercer, died in in the 1830's in Copiah Co. Mississippi, but there is evidence that John moved to Scott Co. Older 20th century published Whittington genealogies from the turn of the century state that after the death of Chloe Mercer Whittington, John W. married Mary Finley (of whose first husband much is known and written) and moved to Scott County, Mississippi to live until the year 1841. Mary Finley, a widow had several children including: John Middleton Finley b. 1804 in Georgia and married Nancy Guynes; Mary Butler Finley b. 1806 who married Henry H Guynes; and Nicholas Finley who married Alzeda Guynes. John W. Whittington and Mary Finley had no children. Four John Whittingtons are living in Scott County and listed in the 1841 Scott County, Mississippi tax records and the 1840 Scott County Mississippi census.

John W. Whittington's son, Byrd and his wife Sarah Guynes, moved from Copiah Co. Mississippi to Milam Co. Texas. Also living in Scott Co. Mississippi after 1840 at the same time as John W. Whittington was Zachariah M. Whittington, a War of 1812 veteran, whose daughters, Martha and Emily Whittington married brothers (James and Harmon Guynes) of his daughter-in-law, Sarah Guynes (Byrd's wife). Daughter Tabitha Corley and son Moses Whittington moved with their families to Louisiana.

Whittington is related to Moses.

Moses Whittington and his first wife Nancy were parents of six children. Nancy died prior to 1857 and Moses was remarried to Margaret Stuckey, daughter of William Stuckey and Susan Pipkin in March 1857 in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. Marker Text: Val Verde Baptist Church traces its history to 1875, when eight members of the Baptist Church in Davilla joined together to organize a congregation closer to their homes. J. S. Mullins served as the first pastor of the new church. One of the charter members, James Putnam Whittington (1830-1909) was a veteran of the Civil War. A member of H. H. Sibley's brigade in the New Mexico Campaign, he had participated in the Battle of Val Verde. When the time came to name the new church, Whittington suggested Val Verde, and the other members agreed. The congregation met in a small schoolhouse until 1884, when Whittington donated this property for a larger sanctuary and community cemetery. A building was erected which served the members for the next sixty-five years. In 1949 a surplus army chapel was moved here from Brownwood to serve as a new sanctuary. Church members worked to rebuild the structure, and it was dedicated in January 1951. An annual church memorial day has been observed by present and former members of the congregation since 1982. The Val Verde Cemetery on the church grounds contains the graves of many area pioneers.
