Sister Mary Joseph Michalka, 81, died on Nov. 6 at Villa de Matel convent in Houston.
A Mass of Christian burial was held in her honor on Nov. 10. Her remains were interred in the adjoining convent cemetery.
She was born on July 2, 1920 in Cameron, the daughter of Mary Teresa Kunz and Frank Aloysius Michalka.
She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word on Nov. 2, 1941 and made Final Profession of Religious Vows on June 6, 1949.
Sister served as a Nurse Supervisor at Sante Fe Hospital in Temple; St. Edward Hospital in Cameron; St. Patrick Hospital in Lake Charles, LA.
She also served as Director of General Services in Port Arthur and as Patient Representative at Holy Cross Hospital in Austin and St. Anthony Center in Houston; and as Treasurer and Assistant Supervisor at St. Placidus Convent and Marian Convent, both in Houston.
She is survived by brothers Msgr. Arthur Michalka and Rudy Michalka; sisters Catherine Anderle, all of Texas, and Christine Karnowski of Alcoa, TN.
