Hello Tom,
I am also interested in Wm. Littleton Herrin who owned the land (2A south of E. Main and east of LaNana Creek from 1904-1940) where my wife grew up in Nacogdoches. Her grandmother owned the land 1942-1979.

Lit also owned another 8A north of E. Main just east of LaNana Creek where he had an active Brick Yard in 1912 and it still existed but was inactive in 1921.

In 1935 he was retired an living at 474 E. Main.

My wife tells me of charred walls in the smaller front room of the house. The story is that Elizabeth Sartin Herrin tried to burn the house down. Do you know anything about this?

My wife's brother's think the house was designed by Dietrich Rulfs as one of the houses he kept busy with in between designing many of the fine big houses in town. I have not been able to confirm this. Have you ever heard such a story?

Anyway have you found out anything more about any buildings built by Lit Herrin? Which ones?

Oh... Did he work with Henry L. Austin? During what time period. He bought the 2A south E. Main from H.L. Austin and another guy in 1904. Austin owned half interest in this land since 1890.
Peace,
James R. Davis, Sacramento, CA

You're going to need some legwork on this! J. Nick Reynolds was probably James Nicholas Reynolds? Seems he married Mollie Sanders ca. 1878-1879? That's supported by death certificates: Charles Hince Reynolds (17 Apr 1883 - 9 Jun 1948) and Rosie Lee Spoonemore (28 Dec 1882 - 21 Apr 1968). Nicholas Reynolds found 1880 Dimmit-Carrizo Springs-044-Image 13. Believe the daughter, Juliann, wed Sidney J. Swinney and there are death certificates supporting that union. Death certificate: Cordelia Reynolds (Age 55 - 18 Sep 1941) died in Austin State Home. She was a resident for 15 years thus was there prior to J. Nick's death. They married in Gonzales County and an overview map of Texas Counties will prove helpful while tracing the family.

Hi, I am trying to do the genealogy of my mother Evelyn Mitchell of Thomaston, Ga. 1915-1979. Her father was Robert Mitchell, 1895-1940, Thomaston, Ga. His father was Benjamin Mitchell, 1812-1880, Jones county, Ga. His father was James Lee or W. Mitchell, Jones, Franklin county Ga. From there I hit a brick wall. Do you have any information on the family group. I heard that the original member came for Ireland or Scotland. Who knows. If you can help, thank you very much. Vic

The 1880 Census of Melrose Precinct, Nacogdoches Co, TX
Charlie Bird, age 34(1845/1846), born in Georgia to both parents born in GA, farmer
Franki, age 28, born in TX, to both parents born in GA
Henry, 15(1864/1865),
Sarah, 12(1867/1868)
Mandy, 10(1869/1870)
Merchant P, 7(1872/1873)
David, 6(1873/1874)
Tiny, 4, female (1875/1876)
Gilbert, 3/12. The census was enumerated on 8 June, so Gilbert was born about February/March of 1880. (However, subsequent information shows his year of birth as 1879. His World War I Draft Registration shows 1881; however that registration is often wrong. Also, he had to have been born prior to 1881 due to being on the 1880 Census.

As you have done, I tried to track the children to see if they lived with them.
--A family tree posted by "emwprice" showed Gilbert Byrd, born 10 Feb 1879 and in US Census to 1930, died Sep 1968 in Tulsa, OK (Source was the Social Security Death Index, however the "last residence:" on the SSDI is NOT NECESSARILY where a person actually lived or died). It showed his wife and many children. The tree showed Charlie Bird as born 1846, but did not show him past 1880. It showed Franki, but nothing past 1880. Gilbert was the only child shown past the 1880 census. He was in Seminole County, OK for the World War I Draft Registration. I found no other posted family information.

The Court Case:
http://books.google.com/books?id=U_0DAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA52&am...
Based on the facts within this civil case, Charlie and Francis did own land and Charlie conducted a transaction for a loan ($100.00) from Jane Mast in 1891, but there is no evidence that Francis was involved in the transaction... UNLESS her signature appears on the warranty deed provided to Mast for the loan. After a year, Byrd had paid $45.00 and nothing more. So, legally, the land would have fully transferred to Mast. In 1899, a Luther Swift bought the land from the heirs of Jane Mast. After Swift obtained the land, Henry Byrd, acting in behalf of Charles and wife (the wife's name is not identified), attempted to pay off the mortgage, but Swift refused. This case, while identifying Charlie and Francis as owners of the land in 1891, does not identify any evidence that Francis and Charlie were at that point married, or if Francis had died at any point from 1891 to previous years.

---There is absolutely NO INDICATION, EVIDENCE, or COMMON SENSE to indicate that Charlie and Francis had divorced in/around 1900. The person believed to be the correct person is indicated by the 1900 Census as to have remarried to Sallie "about" 1900, does not INDICATE his previous marriage ended by divorce (or any other reason) around 1900.

The 1910 Census of Justice Prect 1, Nacogdoches Co, TX
Owning at 126 East Main Street, Nacogdoches City.
Charlie Byrd, age 65, born in Georgia to both parents born in GA, Black, Second marriage of 10 years.
Sallie, age 63, born in TX to father born US, mother TX, MW(Mixed White), third marriage, mother of 13/7 living.
---This strongly "appears" to be the correct Charlie Byrd; however, there isn't enough proof in this census to completely satisfy he is the correct person. Nor does it have the proof that they had married about 10 years previous.

Cemetery records, as well as death records for this period, regrettably leave enough gaps to hinder research. I did several cemetery researches, but unless they had permanent gravestones that would have been observed during a "walk through" transcription, they would have been missed. Cemetery records, death records, during this period were STILL "racist." However, the local history records within Nacogdoches County "might" have the information you need.

After my own review of your information as posted, I find you are a worthy researcher and have abilities to "gut your way" through this. My research was to make sure you didn't receive data that was NOT true or backed by assuming facts not supported.

Gilbert's birth year varies frequently! Methinks the SSDI year, 1879, is more correct than other sources? He's found with parents/siblings 1880 Nacogdoches-Melrose and with married sister, Euphema Day, in 1900 Nacogdoches-Melrose. Mollie/Mary is troublesome! Try researching children born to Eli Columbus/Eliza J. Wilson. They married 7 Jan 1897 in Angelina County. Meaning no disrespect, Mollie may have been a "lovechild"?

I'm searching for information on Mollie Columbus.

She was born 12/21/1891 in Tx (I think in Lufkin, TX)

She married Gilbert Byrd in 12/13/1903 Nacogdoches County.

I have not found in Gilbert or Mollie in the 1900 Census.

Mollie's parents are unknown to me. It has been said that she was half Seminole and African American but not sure what parent was Native American. I'm not sure if she had any siblings.

Mollie and Gilbert later moved to Oklahoma but I'm not sure when they moved there. I do know that they oldest known child was born abt 1907.

I would appreciated and help or suggested leads for information.

I am seeking information on Charlie Byrd and Francis Byrd.

Charlie Byrd DOB 1846 Ga DOD unknown.
Francis Byrd DOB 1852 TX DOD unknown.

They may be listed under the following names Charles, Franki or Bird. Their race should be listed as black.

Their children are:
Henry Byrd 1865,
Sarah Byrd 1868,
Amanda or Mandy Byrd 1870,
Merchant Byrd 1873,
David Byrd 1874,
Tiny Byrd 1876,
Gilbert Byrd 1884.
I know that Sarah, Merchant, Gilbert moved to Oklahoma. Amanda stayed in Texas. I have found no additional information on Henry, David or Tiny. I have tried to track down the children to determine if they lived with any of the children.

They were living in Melroes Nacogdoches County Tx in 1880.

I believe Charlie remarried Sallie Pettis abt 1899 are listed together in the 1910 census in Nacogdoches County. Sallie is listed in the 1930 census living in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County Texas as widow. I have not found Sallie in the 1920 census.

I'm trying to find a date of death for Charlie and Francis Byrd. Also trying to find them in 1900 census.

I reason to believe that Francis was still alive and that they were still together in 1891. There is a Texas Civil Appeals case in Nacogdoches County that talked about a Charles and Francis Byrd and also mentioned a Henry Byrd. The case was Sarah Moore et al v Luther Swift and was decided 04/15/1902.

Any help would be appreciated with any members of this family.

Hi there,

We have an Emilie Mae Bass in our family; She married around 1935, to Mason Mayne, who was born in Van Zandt.

Most of this branch of my family lived in and around Angelina and Nacogdoches Counties throughout their lives. I believe Emilie & Mason settled in Grandbury, TX. I don't know if she is relation to those you mentioned, as I don't have much info on her yet.

Best of luck!

I would greatly appreciate any help with information about my great grandfather,George W McDaniel. Here is what I do know: George W McDaniel was born about 1859 in Texas and died Dec 12, 1950 in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was married to Delia McCall and had one child, Lee Velma McDaniel.I find him on 1920 census in Lamar, Texas and 1940 and 1950 cesus living in Nacogdoches,Texas. On one census it states his father was born in Mississippi.I have obtained his death certificate but it does not list his mother or father. He is buried at Eden Cemetery in Douglass, Texas.I have found a few George Mcdaniel's that may have been him only to eliminate them for wrong age or wrong race.As far as I know Lee Velma McDaniel was his only biological child but he did help his wife,Delia, raise his stepchildren.I have really ran into a road block with this and would love any info about him prior to the 1920 census, especially who his parents were.Because I dont have alot of info about him to start with finding his parents has become very difficult.Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
