I am searching for my Grandmother. I was told that she was around Terrell, Texas when she died. She was married to Daniel Spencer Rockey and they had ten children 4 girls and 6 boys. Was there any record of a doctor treating her for her lungs in the year of 1926 - 1927.

Please can anyone help with any information on her. Of knowing of her or the location of her in those years.

Dodie
Texaslady1606@aol.com

He was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery on Oct 12, 1921.
Please find any info on his obituary and/or the fire that killed him.
Wood Barton - killed Nov. 10, 1922

I am trying to find out who the parents of Wood Barton were. Here is what I know. Wood Barton was murdered on Nov. 10, 1922 in Paducah, Cottle Co. TX. He was the son in law of John Beal Sneed a wealthy rancher of the area. According to the newspaper accounts of his trial, his brother A.H. Barton was at the trial (don't you hate the use of initials back then!)
I believe that A.H. Barton is Adophus Henry Barton born June 8, 1882 in Navarro Co. and he died Apr. 11, 1924 in Dawson Co. TX. His death certificate states that his father was H.L. Barton and his mother was a Murphy. However, I believe that his father was H.S. Barton or Henry Strong Barton and his mother was Elizabeth A. Murphy from info I found on the Navarro Co. rootsweb site. I cannot prove this yet, it is only speculation.
I am writing a book about murders in Northern Texas and at the end of each story, I add a mini genealogy for each person involved. I am at a standstill with Wood Barton and would like to include his genealogy at the end of the story. Is there anyone who can steer me in the right direction and help me discover who Wood's parents and siblings were? Julie Coley - Wichita Falls, TX

How Did They Die? Murders in N. Texas 1892-1925
http://wehaveneatstuff.com/category/2645474501/1/How-Did-The...
Looking for descendants of Willis A. GRIGGS of Ellis County, TX

Hello All,

Is anyone researching or have any information on the descendants of Willis A. GRIGGS and his wife Mary Taylor HALLY or HOLLY? Willis A. GRIGGS was born in Giles County, TN in 1846 and moved to Ellis County, TX sometime between 1874 and 1878. Willis and Mary had six children, one son and five daughters. Their son was James W. GRIGGS (b: 16 Jan 1868 in TN) and he had three sons: Joseph Bernard GRIGGS (b: Nov 1894 in TX), Willis A. GRIGGS (b: 9 Aug 1899 in TX) and Earl O. GRIGGS (b: 16 Jul 1902 in TX). I am looking for a list of the children of these three sons. The following is all I have on them:

1. Joseph Bernard GRIGGS married Jewel (maiden name unknown) and had at least one child: Jay B. GRIGGS (b: 1921/1922 in TX). It is not known when or where Joseph Bernard died but in the “Social Security Death Index” there is a Bernard Griggs who was born on 16 Nov 1894 and died in May of 1973 in Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, California, but it has not been confirmed that this is the same Bernard Griggs.

2. Willis A. GRIGGS (the son) married Josephine JOHNSON in 1927/1928 and died in Itasca, Hill County, TX in May of 1971. He and Josephine were buried in the Frost Cemetery, Frost, Navarro County, TX. No children are listed with them in the 1930 Texas census.

3. Earl O. GRIGGS married Annie LONG 1928/1929 and died in Frost, Navarro County, TX on 22 Nov 1980. He and Annie were also buried in the Frost Cemetery, Frost, Navarro County, TX. No children are listed with them in the 1930 Texas census.

The person I am trying to connect to one of the three above sons is Willis Lee GRIGGS who married Doris Maxine JONES. Willis and Doris had two children who were born in Tarrant County, TX in 1954 and 1956.

Any information that anyone has on this family would be greatly appreciated.

Frank L. Griggs
Email: frankgriggs@juno.com
URL: www.thegriggsfile.com

Hughes Family and White family from Navarro County 1900

I am looking for information on James Henry Hughes (b. 1864 Kentucky) and Jennie White (b 1869 Texas) they married in 1985 according to the 1900 census of Navarro County, Texas. They had three children at the time. Mary, Isaac Martin and Anna belle.
James Henry Hughes came from Kentucky. He lived near a Wesley Hughes in 1900. I believe they were related. Wesley was the son of either James Henry's brother Jesse Hughes married to Rosa or Roland Hughes married to Edith. Rosa and Edith Edens were sisters from Kentucky as well. Jennie White had a brother named Bell, and a sister named Martie. Her Father was Martin and Mother was Mary. In an 1880 census Martin and Mary had a Catherine Crabb living in their household. I think Catherine was Mary's mother. Could anyone help me with more information about these families?????
I'm researching the HENRY family, originally from Virginia.

It has come to my attention that a HENRY family bible was lost because of non-payment of a storage bill many, many years ago, possibly in Navarro County, Texas.

I noticed the following on the Navarro County Historical Society site.
Navarro County Genealogical Society

Leaves and Branches - Index
Volume 5 - Issue 3 - August 1982
•	Edgar Family
•	****Henry Family Bible****
•	Pillians-Burleson Acres Ranch
•	The Bonners of Warren County, Tennessee
•	Mortality Lists, Adults Only, Corsicana, Navarro, Texas, 1901 - 1931 (Continued...)

The bible that was lost contained information on the HENRY family and possibly shows a connection to Patrick HENRY.

Does anyone have a contact number for Navarro County Genealogical Society? E-mail address that I have are not valid.

Or if anyone has access to this volume and could do a search for me, I would appreciate the help.

Judy
Birth records for Navarro County

Can anyone tell me if birth records or marriage records are available at the courthouse for events as early as 1871. I am trying to find a birth record for Mary Ellen Williams born 6 May 1871 in Corsicana. Her mother was Mary Elizabeth Price (Molly) and her father was an unknown Williams. I am especially interested in finding her father's first name. They were probably married in Navarro county in about 1870. Any information would be appreciated.

This may be a long shot, but it's worth a try. Searching for dates of death for my great-grandparents: George D. Martin and wife Viola E. (Richardson) Martin. Last known residence Purdon in 1914 per George's confederate pension application. There is possiblity that they died in 1918 during the influenza epidemic. Wanted to know if there is a mortality schedule & where it could be located. Thank you in advance.
I have a series of photographs of a construction project by the T W Snow Construction Company and I am trying to pinpoint the location. The project is a water tower at a rail stop. There is already one tower. There are some grain elevators and at least one set of side tracks. The sign on the station just says "Mildred". The land appears fairly flat and scrubby. In one shot there appears to be a mesa in the distance. There is also a small ravine with water. The pictures were probably taken between 1937 and the start of WWII. There is a 1937 International Harvester truck and some children. Also a couple of ranch hands. Any ideas? Elizabeth in Florida

They were all living near Wortham and Tehuacana near the county lines of Freestone, Limestone and Navarro counties.
Does anyone know where this school was located. I have been looking for my family's old home. It must have been close to the school for all these children to be attending.

YOUTH CLEARED OF CHARGES AFTER TWO-HOUR HEARING

A youth, 13, who shot and killed his stepfather March 21 at Mildred, was freed Saturday of juvenile deliquency charges after a two-hour hearing before District Judge A.P. Mays at Corsicana.

The court held the slaying to be justifiable homicide.

Slain was Guy Bennett Matlock, 53, a carpenter. The stepson, Charles Shaunfield, testified that he killed Matlock to protect both himself and his mother. He used a .22-caliber rifle.
Desperate for help!!!!

I have been looking for obituaries and/or any newspaper stories about my uncle who was killed inside of a cemetery in Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Bennie HUFFMAN, b. 14 Jun 1945, d. 6 May 1982.
Mother: Fern Anthonett HAGAN, b. 1914, d. 25 Jun 1961.
Father: (Unknown) HUFFMAN
Siblings:
Charles HUFFMAN,
Valleen Louise (Camp) HUFFMAN, 1931-1998,
Ruth Ann (Palmeri) HUFFMAN, 1941-1987.
Fern's Next Husband: Aubrey David GORDON, (1912-1979).
Half-sister to Bennie:
Glenda (Coker) GORDON, b. 1947.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
IMPORTANT NOTE: Semi-graphic details were necessary from here on.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He was grieving a lot over the loss of his mother. She was buried at "Zion Rest" in Corsicana, he would sometimes be there, at any given time, hanging out, or drinking on the grounds.
Some teenagers approached him... and had asked him to buy some alcohol for them... he did... and when he returned, they wanted money--(he didn't have any, or not enough for their liking), so they beat him to death with a pipe - up against a fence there.
Bennie's children were put up for adoption, I am not sure if their adoption was based on his death or if it happened before that. I think she said there were four children but it has been awhile since we talked about it and it really bothers me to bring it up. He was older than she, had a different father.. I would guess that the children are in their 40's to 50's, at the time of this writing (2008).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If anyone can help me find any stories or documentation relating to Bennie, his children, his death, or ANYTHING they might deem of importance - it would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you very much,
Robbie

Early settlers of Bazette community, Navarro Co.

From Prairie Point and Bazette Baptist Cemetery Book, April 1, 1992:
Bazette, a community about four and one-half miles north of Kerens in Navarro County, was once a river post of the Trinity that rivaled the east port town up the river of Porter's Bluff in Henderson Co. The town derived its name from an early pioneer family named Bazette who moved near the river about 1845 and operated a ferry.

Early settlers were the JOHN STREETS, BARNETTS, and the ELLISONS (who in about 1872 had the first post office in their home as well as a store, and who also gave land for a school and a church south of their store.) A "strict" Baptist preacher named Parson RICHMOND, who used the school facilities for his services, later arrived.

The first school teacher was a Professor HOOK, then Professor FLOWERS. Most of the early preachers came from Corsicana, among them were Modrell, Hines, Purgear, Sommons and Compere.

The Buck BARRYs were an early pioneer family. He became sheriff of Navarro Co. in 1849. Others were the POPEs, BANKs, MCCLUNGs, MCFADDENs, and the WESTBROOKS. In the early 1870s the Matt ALBRITTON family moved to Bazette from Alabama, in 1879 the John DESKIN family made the long haul to Texas and Bazette in a two-whiil, ox-drawn cart.

In about 1872 COHAGEN operated a general merchandise store, later this burned. About this time George and Lee MCFADDEN became store owners, also Dale SESSIONS and "Shy" SMITH owned a store where a post office was established about 1895 with Comer VERNON as postmaster. About 1900 Joe BENSON and Oscar GAINES had a grocery store. Also in the late 1890s G. F. GREEN had a store until the three stores were taken over in the early 1900s and operated under Sessions, McFadden, Green & Co. In 1890-1900 R. L. KILLINGSWORTH was a blacksmith.
I am seeking information regarding the Stovall family from Kerens, Texas. Specifically, my great grandfather Benjamin Franklin Stovall born 09-07-1872 –died May 1959; and his older sister “Eliza” Stovall Jemmerison – possibly Elizabeth. They are Black (possibly slaves) yet from the pictures they can ‘pass’ as White. According to my grandmother, their mother was named Jennie (Wesley) who married a Black man whose surname was Wesley. Mr. Wesley was the stepfather to Benjamin and Eliza.

My paternal grandmother (Diet) is the last surviving member of the union between Benjamin Franklin Stovall and Joe Ella Hayes of Kerens, Texas. My father, Ralph Earl Johnson (DOB 01-29-1935) died in October 1973 in Corsicana, Texas. His mother is Ethel Stovall Jones was born in Kerens, Texas in August 1916.

My official name is: Jo Ella Stovall Johnson Tarbutton Costello and I was on November 17, 1963 (5 days prior to the assassination of JFK) in a rural town, Corsicana, 50 miles south of Dallas, Texas.

Benjamin and Joe Ella Hayes (DOB 01-25-1880) were married in 1885 in Kerens, Texas. These parents had the following children.

Leona “Ona” Stovall 07-08-1887
Lena Stovall 1889
Willie Stovall 12-01-1900
Opal Esther Stovall 1902
Hugh “Tootie” Stovall 02-13-1905
Mamie Stovall 07-05-1907
Ada Stovall 04-23-1909
Preston Stovall 1911
Tim (Templeton) Stovall 1911
Pearl Mae Stovall 12-06-1913
Ethel Ora Stovall 08-25-1916

Benjamin and Joe Ella died within a year of each other; Benjamin’s death in May 1959 and Joe Ella in May 1960).

Help! Two of my ancestors moved from the Carolinas to Navarro Co., Texas 1870's. One came back to the Carolinas after his young wife died. His name was B.N. SKATES but it was misspelled SAKTES. His wife was Elizabeth Absher. They had children he left behind with her parents. Am told they are on the 1880 census maybe Dresdan area. Would love to know if anyone is connected to this family still in Texas. Also, other relative was Asbury "Doc" SCATES/SKATES who later moved from Navarro to Oklahoma. If you can help at all please e-mail me as I am still on the east coast and have no access to Navarro Co records! Thanks for anything!
Debbie

Looking for the correct last maiden name for Elizabeth Jones. Meador/Meadows. The 1870 federal Navarro County
census has her listed as Eliz Janes with a C. Meador in the household, (I am assuming it is her father.) I find her in the 1850 Clear Creek, Hot Springs, Arkansas as Elizabeth Jones with Clement Meadows as a near neighbor, family members match up. I Find her daughter ( Lucy Jones/Brumbelo
(Born Navarro County, Texas 1862) (Died Dec 6,1940 Bernardino, California) showing her mothers maiden name as Meadows. Anyone can give me verification of her maiden name. Please!!!
I am looking for the burial location for James Monroe Higgins and wife Eliza A Higgins. They both died in April 1880 and I assume that they where buried somewhere close to their home. Would appreciate any information anyone can provide.

The Navarro Co. History Book, Vol. Four, page 126, references nearly 16 acres that my great-grandfather, James Huey DOUGLAS and wife, Fannie M. DOUGLAS (nee McAFEE) bought in 1900. It apparently is referred to as the "Leonard Addition" - Block 1, Lot 14. Is there anyone familiar with Corsicana who can tell me a road or crossroads where this property is? I live in Michigan but have been to Corsicana four or five times. Would like to drive by to take a look the next time I get down there.
Thanks in advance,
Jim Douglas
