Searching for my biological grandfather

My mother was adopted and I have found her biological mother but have not had any luck finding my grandfather. My grandmother was from rural Carthage. Here's the information that I have from the state of Texas and my mother's adoption file. My grandfather was American born, believed to be of Dutch descent. He was born around 1906 and died at age 72 of chronic congestive failure due to ischemic heart disease. At the time of his death he was married and his occupation most of his life was owning/managing a grocery store and service station in Texas. He did not have any other children born in Texas. His father was a farmer and died young. His mother was in a rest sanitorium, in Texas. He had one brother who was in the army in 1941.He had a high school education and worked as a book keeper at a general merchandise store in Texas. He was 5’4” and weighed around 150 lbs. His complexion was dark, his eyes and hair were brown. His face was square-shaped and his eyes were small. He had good teeth. He was in good health and passed the rigid physical exam for admittance into the Navy. He was a frank, forward fellow, who met people well and always had a lot of friends. He enjoyed dancing and going to shows. He was not very athletic. He had average to above-average intelligence. He was reputed to be an excellent book keeper. His marital status was listed as unmarried. My grandmother’s story was that he boarded with some neighbors near her family’s home in Rural Carthage Texas. They dated for three or four years off and on during that time. They never talked of marriage, were just attracted physically. When she told him of her condition, he said nothing. Shortly afterwards, he quietly left the country and it is generally believed that he joined the Navy. She stated that she had no desire to have further contact with him and no desire to marry him. Please let me know if any of this information is familiar.
Possible Connection between Ritter family and Cleveland or Turner Family

My father claimed that his family was related to the Ritters of Murvaul. My dad, Allan Turner, was born in 1917 in Gary, one of a set of triplets. His dad's name was Joe (Joseph) and his mother was Sarah Jane (Jenny) Cleveland Turner. The family moved from the Gary area to Overton, Rusk Co. about 1920.

Also, after reviewing the Ritter lineage and researching the area, I am beginning to think that this may be a case of neighbors being mistaken for relatives. Does anyone have any information that can either help me find a connection or disprove it once and for all.

I'm not related but add me to the list of people wishing to see her info! More than likely, Sarah died and was buried in Louisiana prior to 1900? That's based on her husband (Andrew) enumerated as widowed and living with their son Benjamin in Sabine Parish. Too, Mouton/Ella were still in Louisiana in 1910 where Sarah was not found. Ancestry.com's "Suggested Records" might be the source of confusion? The family of Arthur B. Ross/Sarah Jane is recommended research for that of Andrew J. Ross/Sarah Ann. Different families!

I am also researching the Thomas James Long family of Lexington, South Carolina and Chickasaw County, Mississippi.
My grandfather, Richard Metts Gann, told the story also of his grandfather "Pappy" Long (David Archibald Long) burying his brother during the War Between the States. However, he mentioned that it was in Georgia where his brother was killed. That must have been a horrible experience burying your own brother. I am trying to trace the Long family back. Does anyone have any South Carolina information on the marriage of Thomas J. Long and Martha Parke??? Can this be proven??? Wills, etc.??? Also, Thomas' father was a William Long who married Elizabeth Broom. I would like to share family information.

Patricia Gann-Mortimer

John Anderson 1723-1781 had several children, two were Bailey 1753-1840 and Charles 1762-1818. Bailey's descendant is Jonathon (Old Shelby) Anderson. Charles descendant is Jonathon Hadley Anderson, both of Shelby/Panola Co. They were cousins...though many stories are unclear. The Anderson line connects many places throughout my line with several cousins marrying into the same families. I do not have all the children of Jonathon Hadley but I do have two daughters (Icy P Anderson and Ione Anderson). This Icy P Anderson also marries a cousin named Archibald E Anderson son of Jonathon Anderson (Old Shelby. The Children of Old Shelby I know of are 2 Wyatt Anderson 1819 - 1863
*2nd Wife of Jonathan Anderson is Hannah Louise English 1795 - 1863
Arhcibald E. Anderson
Perry Anderson 1823 -
Mahala Anderson
Abraham H. Anderson
Pinkney Anderson
James B. Anderson
Elizabeth Anderson
I hope that helps. They intermarried often.
I'm using my father's account: Bill Anderson, but I'm Crislee Anderson Moreno. We have a lot on all the Andersons of Panola and Shelby Counties if you need anything email me at crisleem@yahoo.com

That is wonderful ! I have had frequent requests for information re graves there, but no one apparently had ever indexed it. Also it was hard for anyone to find if they were looking for it. Even Hawthorn Funeral Home said it was hard for them to find it when they had a burial to do there. Thank you for your willingness to preserve the information there for all the generations who will come after us.

There were workers there getting ready for a big dedication of the cleaned up cemetery on Monday this week. It had been completely overgrown and lost. I had to work and could not go. I will go soon and photograph all the graves for findagrave.com. I'm pretty sure I recall seeing the names you mentioned. The caretaker now is Mr. Brasher who lives next to it and the road is on his land now. He opened it up and cleaned it up along with others.
DeSoto Parish Marriage Records, 1837-1860 lists a "Mrs. Mary Burns" (bride) to "William B. Porter" (groom), on July 1, 1858 (Book A 285). The 1860 DeSoto Parish Census does not list her husband but family #729-750 enumerated Mary Porter, age 45, born NC, keeps hotel; along with William Burns, age 17, born AL, with no occupation but possessed $1500 in real estate and $2200 in personal estate. But no doubt he is Dr. William Robert Burns (1843-1900). His half brother (Dr) Jacob Smith, b. 2/17/1833 - d. 12/14/1882, m. Ellen Lockert Johnson, b. 10/20/1834 - d. 09/25/1875, are buried in the old family cemetery of Congressman Alvey R. Johnson (1803-1862) of Shelby County.

I am so happy to hear that the Stateline Cemetery is now open. I believe & hope that my great grandfather & grandmother may be buried here. Their names are Nelson Farmer & Vashti Jay. I have searched several times for this cemetery. Thanks again for the notification.
