The only Mary Barfield I see listed in the Barfield Cemetery is Mary Musselwhite, wife of Hiram Barfield.

When were Jesse Barfield and Mary Riley in Polk County? Hiram Barfield and Mary Musselwhite were in Polk County in 1860, 1870 and 1880. Hiram died before 1900 and Mary was in a son's household in 1900.

Bill Peebles

Another clue that "I.V. or Q.V. Walker" might be Kitty Walker is the fact that the Walker families moved together from Montgomery Co. Tx (1880) to Polk Co. (1900). In the Montgomery census (1800, Precinct 4:124, image 41/72), the following Walker families are listed:
H.W. Walker head 31 AL
Francie Walker wife 29 AL
I.V. Walker daughter 7 AL
Martha Walker daughter 4 TX

H.W. (Hannon W.)'s brother Gail is next family in the census:
Gale Walker head 29 AL
Elsie Walker wife 31 AL
A.R. Walker son 6 TX
E.B. Walker dau 1 TX
Emma Walker mother 60 SC (maiden name is Spivey)
Matilda Jourdan sister 33 AL
M.E. Jourdan niece 4 TX

These families are listed in the 1900 Polk Co. census (precinct 1:61, image 45/48).

I found I. V. Walker on the 1880 census in Montgomery County, but her name looks like Q. V. Walker to me. On the 1900 census in Polk County, Robert Walker's mother is listed as S. A. Walker. There's no "T" in her name, but there is a 7 to the right of her name, probably a clerical notation.

The wife Mary Lawrence in the next family is Mary Elizabeth Cherry. She was Samuel Bailey Cherry's sister. She married George Isaac Lawrence 26 Dec 1872 in Rankin County, Mississippi.

John Thomas who married Mary Jane Williams

I am looking for any possible info on a John Thomas who married Mary Jane Williams (abt 1863-bef 1900) on August 6, 1882 in Polk Co., TX.

Mary Jane's father was Hezekiah Williams (1836-1906). Although not proven, I believe that Mary Jane's mother was Lucinda Vickery, daughter of Aaron Vickery of Yalobusha, MS and Mary Jane Russell.

To my knowledge, John and Mary Jane only had two children before both passing sometime before 1900.

1. Mamie Mae Thomas (1883-1960) who married Moody Sankey Galloway
2. Willie Omer Thomas (1884-1967) who married Margaret Pearl James

In accordance to the 1900 census, it is possible for John Thomas to be born in Alabama. The fields for both Mamie and Willie stated Alabama as their father's birthplace while the two were living with their grandfather, Hezekiah Williams in Polk Co.

I think I may have found "Kitty's" family. According to the 1880 census (Polk Co. Texas), there is an I.V. Walker, born 1849 in AL to Hanon W. and Francis Walker. Note the younger sister Martha (b. 1846). In the 1900 census the same family has grown considerably; Martha is now 23. What clued me into this family was the fact my grandmother recalled her father, Robert Edward Cherry, traveling to Conroe, TX to get his uncle, a Robert Walker, to sign an affidavit for his SSN application. I'm certain his uncle Robert Walker was "Kitty's" brother, as listed in the 1900 Polk County, Texas census. What I do not understand is the change in names--Francis, in other census reports, and Sarah A.T. in the 1900. I reviewed the death certs of Hannon W. Walker and Francis' children. Francis is listed as "Francis Jernigan" on them. Just about all publicly posted trees list Hannon W. Walker's wife as Sarah Ann. If anyone has any insight into this family, please share. If anyone has submitted an AncestryDNA (atDNA) test, please let men know; I would like to see if we have a match.

Hello,

I am currently several chapters into writing a book about the 22nd Texas Infantry (aka Hubbard’s Regiment).

Since Polk County provided many of its soldiers, it is important to accurately document the families and the towns they called home.

I am looking for extra stories about the personal lives of soldiers, photos, etc …. If there is specific info you would like included, please let me know.

Any suggestions regarding contacts or information for research would be greatly appreciated. I intend on including A LOT of information about all its soldiers

Finally, if you are a direct descendant of a soldier in Hubbard’s Regiment, I will include your photo and info.

Of course, all submissions will be credited in the text of the book.

You may reach me at tpwardlaw@aol.com for additional information, text contributions, and photo contributions.

The book should be ready by the end of this year.

Thank you,
Trevor P.
I was wrong. I spoke to someone today whose grandmother attended Pine Grove School. Of course her grandmother is dead, and no pictures of the school are known. It was a one room school using the church building.

I do have pictures of Camden School groups taken in the 1920's. Some of the students aren't identified. I'll be happy to send copies in case you might find your father in one of them. I know he lived in Camden at one time---perhaps he transferred to that school.

You may contact me on email-----mclou@hal-pc.org
Norma McLoughlin

This Clarence Sirman would be Clarence Hickman who is the son of Bart and Mary Ellen. They all lived in Pine Grove.
I was out there a couple years ago and went to the cemetery. At the entrance to the cemetery, there is a church and an old church. The old church served as church/school at one time.
My grandfather died in OK. My grandmother moved to TX to be close to her father, which on the census is next door. She died in 1923. My dad then went to live with his Aunt Hazel and her husband in Dayton, TX. Something happened and my dad ran away from home and ended up in Corrigan. The Hickman's took him in and raised him.
I went to the courthouse and found some records of my dad attending Pine Grove School.
I think the 1940 census made an error in leaving his name out and they added it to the end. He was a foster son of Bart and Mary Ellen.
The earliest pic I have of my dad was in the lumber camp probably taken in the late 1930s.
What I am searching for is a pic of him at an earlier age, which could possibly be in a school pic. Most places made a group pic of the school. That is what I am searching for.

Woodrow Middleton was living in Liberty County, Texas, with his widowed mother, Martha, and five siblings in 1920. On the 1930 census he was listed with Bart Hickman and his wife, Mary Ellen Gibbs Hickman as a lodger (looks like orphan was also written in). In 1940 he was living with Clarence Sirman and his wife, Hazel----listed as a foster son---this was in Camden. Woodrow was working in the sawmill.

Bart and Mary Ellen Hickman are buried in Pine Grove Cemetery.

I have done extensive research on that part of Polk County, and have never found a school listed in Pine Grove. There was a school in Barnum and one in Camden (one each side of Pine Grove Church and cemetery---a couple of miles to either.) I do have pictures from Camden and Barnum Schools. The only one I've ever seen from Pine Grove is of a singing school group (too early for Woodrow. It was about 1905.)

Most of the Hickmans lived in the Pine Ridge area, and are buried there. Pine Ridge is about five miles from Camden. Bart and Mary Ellen probably lived in the Pine Grove area bacause of the Gibbs family----many of them are buried in Pine Grove.

Norma McLoughlin

Identifying the name of your father would have helped greatly. If you'd post his name and DOB, additional searches could possibly find him. I understand the "school" actually was held in the Pine Grove Church until 1947.

The correct link to the Polk County Memorial Museum...
http://www.museumsusa.org/museums/info/1167600
(last updated in August 2010).
But, a review of the page doesn't indicate they would have class photo's.

Here is the location of the Pine Grove Church. It is East of Corrigan on route 287. You can zoom in on the map by using the plus box "+" on the left side of the map. The Darden Cemetery is also east.
http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gazpublic/getgooglemap?p_lat=30...

Here are some school photo's to include one "singing school" in Pine Grove.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~polkcounty...
BUT, the photo itself was not coming up for me. Check the listing of names, if your father was listed, click on the name of Norma McLoughlin. It opens an email form, send her an email and request the photo directly.

Here are some additional Polk County listings,
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~polkcounty...
to include some High School year book entries. Some extracts of the newspaper from 1933. Also look over the names in the "Photo Gallery."

I am hoping to discover documentation of the death in October of 1903 of Joseph McCORMICK, who was born at Georgia in the late 1820's. Joseph McCORMICK married Nancy LOWE around 1846 and they were the parents of Emma Lucretia McCORMICK Baggett (born at Alabama). Have the Polk County death records from 1903 survived? Would anyone know where Joseph McCORMICK was buried? Many thanks!

ANGELINA CO GEN SOC 5 PM MONDAY JANUARY 28, 2013, LUFKIN KURTH MEM LIB

The Angelina County Genealogical Society is scheduled to meet at 5 PM, Monday, January 28th in the community meeting room of Kurth Memorial Library, 706 South Raguet, Lufkin. This is a change from the regular third Monday of the month meeting date for January only. The time will still be 5 PM, and the meeting place will still be Kurth Memorial Library community meeting room. For all other months of 2013, except for December, ACGS officers are expecting to resume their regular meeting schedule of date, time and place at 5 PM on the third Monday of the month at Kurth Memorial Library. The ACGS meeting date was changed from the third Monday to the fourth Monday due to the library being closed the third Monday in January for MLK Day.
The program for the ACGS January 28th meeting will be presented by Kyle Ainsworth, Special Collections Librarian, East Texas Research Center. The ETRC is located on the second floor of Steen Library at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. Mr. Ainsworth is expected to describe the general purpose and function of the ETRC and his duties there in addition to his chosen program topic of “Some Tips for Doing Oral Interviews in Family History Research.” Mr. Ainsworth earned his B. A. in 2006 from The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and both a M.A. in U. S History and a M.S. in Library Science in 2010 from The University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Shortly thereafter Mr. Ainsworth began his employment in the ETRC at SFASU in Nacogdoches. Having only come to Texas two years ago and being originally from the state of Maine, Mr. Ainsworth is expected to present a somewhat unique perspective to doing historical and genealogical research in East Texas based some of his more recent experiences in doing some oral history interviews in the Angelina County area.
Dr. Deborah Burkett (PHD) of Troup, a member of the Cherokee County Genealogical Society and the Cherokee County Historical Commission, antique store owner, quilt show sponsor and quilt book compiler, is scheduled to speak at the 5 PM Monday, February 18, 2013, ACGS meeting at Kurth Memorial Library. Last fall some of Dr. Burkett’s historical research and writing activities were twice featured “above the fold” on the front page in two separate issues of the TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH. Her topic will be “Using Old Photographs and Quilts in Family History and Genealogy Research.” Additional information on her program topic and the publication of her new quilt book will be available at a later date.
The ACGS Executive Board will be meeting at 4 PM in the Kurth Memorial Library community meeting room preceding the regular ACGS 5 PM meeting. All present and former standing committee chairmen are encouraged to attend the newly installed 2013 officers said. New incoming ACGS President Rev. Joseph Dufner is expected to continue seeking out ACGS members to fill vacant standing committee chairman posts on the ACGS executive board. Retired journalist Keith Allred has agreed to edit the ACGS newsletter published twice a year replacing Ellen Pyle of Apple Springs who had previously announced her resignation at the end of 2012. The fall issue of the ACGS Newsletter, “Echoes Through the Pines” has been e-mailed to society members with e-mail accounts. Paper copies will be available at the January 28th meeting and in the library genealogy room Mrs. Pyle said. ACGS Executive Board meetings are open to the society membership and all society meetings are open to the public.
Newly elected ACGS officers for the 2013 calendar year are Rev. Joseph Dufner, president; Vivian T. Cates of Alto, vice-president-program chairman; Sharon W. Elliott, treasurer; and Betty Dufner, secretary. Hershel (Dickie) Dixon, Jr. who stepped down after serving three years as society president will move to past-president on the ACGS executive board. Mrs. Dufner, Mrs. Elliott, and Mrs. Cates are returning officers.
Additional information about the ACGS January meeting and ACGS activities can be obtained by calling the Ora McMullen Genealogy Room at 1-936-630-0563 or by doing a web search for the society’s web page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~txacgs. Debbie Parker Wayne of Cushing is the ACGS web master.
ACGS dues are now due and payable for 2013 said ACGS Treasurer Sharon Elliott. ACGS dues are S10.00 for individuals and $15.00 for two people at the same address based on the calendar year.
Free individual genealogical research help is available on the 3rd Monday of each month (except January and December)from 1-4 p.m. in the Ora McMullen Genealogy Room, Kurth Memorial Library, 706 Raguet Street, Lufkin, Texas 75904, 1-936-630-0563, provided by members of the Angelina County Genealogical Society. The contact person for obtaining further information is Cindy McMullen, genealogy department librarian. E-mailing or calling ahead for an appointment is strongly advised to assure individual help from a society volunteer. cmcmullen@cityoflufkin.com or 1-936-630-0563.

Vivian Toole Cates, ACGS Vice-President, Program Chairman and Publicity, 1-936-858-3801 txacgs@myinu.net http://www.myinu.net/vcates
Also, what was his name?

When you receive the Tax Rolls, would you consider doing any look-ups? I could not find a record of my gr gr grandfather as grantee or grantor of land attributed to him in the 1860 federal census. is there some other source of information that might show a transfer of land during that time.
The Polk County website says that their records are viewable online for a fee. Does anyone know if this includes land records? Also, I had an ancestor who is listed in 1851 & 1852 on the Polk Co, TX Tax Record but the land is now located in the adjacent San Jacinto Co (created 1870). Would those land records be in which county? Original grantee was a Robert Rankin to my John W. Leggett. Also, looking for info on a James H Or W (not sure of this transcription because of handwriting) Leggett whose original grantee was Isaac Conway/Conaway/Connaway - 1851 & 1852.
Thanks,
Jan Stovall

Land Records

My gr gr grandfather is in Polk County, TX (Moscow) in the 1860 federal census. He moved there from Mississippi sometime after 1850 and moved back to mississippi before 1870. In the 1860 census, he appears to have owned real estate valued at 8,215. this seems high for my grandfather was not a wealthy man. Does anyone know what records are available so i can trace this land ownership?

The Elusive Parent of William H. H. Purvis?

For the past year, information on William H. H. Purvis has been very scare and elusive. There are many answers that I would like a reliable source for and I'm turning to the readers and researchers in this area of Texas for an answer.

Who are the parent of William H. H. Purvis?

He died sometime around 1855. I have several legal documents on the care of his 3 minor children - Purdy Jasper, Gabrianna and Jemima Angeline.

When exactly did he die?

William married Jemima Magee. Where are the two of them buried?

I believe William had one sibling - a brother names James Purdee J. Purvis.

http://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-elusive-...

Regards,

Charlie Purvis
http://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/
HL2604,
I too am puzzled as to her being in Polk County, especially if she is D.R. Walker's daughter. I did take note of the 1880 census you mentioned, but have some doubts. Kitty had at least 5 children. Her name is listed as "Kitty" on two of death certs and as "Victoria" and "Matilda" on two others. I agree fully on the use of Kitty as a nickname for Catherine/Katherine. Many ancestry trees list her name as Victoria Matilda "Kitty" Walker, but I have yet to find solid evidence of name. I am under the impression she died giving birth to Lilly Victoria Cherry, her youngest in 1902. I have yet to find Kitty's death cert and grave.

For me, the hard part is "figuring out" what she was doing in 1891-Polk County!(lol) "Kitty" is an obvious nickname for Catherine/Katherine. Search 1880 AL-Barbour-Atkinsons-021-Image 12 for D. B. Walker, Savill, etal. She's the eight-year old identified as Catherine. Her father was Darling Rufus Walker (15 May 1844 - 13 Nov 1924) and Savil E. (nee: Ludlum) Walker (4 May 1850 - 9 Mar 1911). They wed 13 Nov 1865 in Barbour, AL. His father, Nathan Walker, lived nearby on several census so have fun researching. I'm not related!

Please accept my condolence for the untimely loss of your mom? Also, please collect as many death records as possible? Several of your ancestors also perished early. I'm not related and this is a courtesy lookup. Tobias' parents were Calvin Fowler (1848-1921) and Rebecca (nee: McCarter) Fowler (4 Dec 1860 - 24 May 1950). Unable to determine their marriage date but estimating 1875-1880 possibly in Houston County, TX. Find Calvin(3), first, in 1850 GA-Thomas-District 81-Image 15 with mom: Lydia(47). Lydia Fowler wed Reddick Watson, 9 Jan 1852, in Thomas, GA. Find them, with Calvin(14), in 1860 LA-Rapides-Not Stated-Image 14. Unable to locate Calvin in 1870. In 1880 TX-Houston-Crockett-022-Image 30, Calvin resided with his McCarter inlaws, misidentified as "McCarty". Next, 1900 TX-Anderson-Tucker-District 7-Image 20. Here, the family consisted of: Calvin(52), Rebecca(39), Tobias(19), Egbert(17), Lillie(13), Roxana(10), Thomas(8), and Daniel(4). No additional children born after Daniel. Calvin/Rebecca resided primarily in Liberty County after 1900. If you haven't already, logon https://familysearch.org/ and setup a "free" user account. That's required to view/print death certificates. Lookup death certificates: Roy Calvin Fowler (12 Mar 1914 - 28 Oct 1944), Tobias Fowler (22 Oct 1880 - 21 Mar 1965), Rosie "Roxie" Harrison (27 Oct 1930), Rebecca Fowler (4 Dec 1860 - 24 May 1950), and Egbert Fowler (4 Jan 1883 - 11 Nov 1918). Familysearch also has marriage date, 17 Sep 1905, for Tobias Fowler/Dora Lackey in Anderson County. They're found 1910 Liberty-Precinct 2-District 0082-Image 40, 1920 Anderson-Palestine Ward 2-District 7-Image 35, 1930 AR-Pulaski-North Little Rock-District 64-Image 12, and 1940 Liberty-Other Places-(146-3)-Image 23. There are several trees on this family. Point your mouse at "Search" in the header of ancestry.com's homepage. Scroll to "Public Member Trees" then click. Enter Calvin Fowler as the father and Rebecca as the mother. Omit her maiden name. Pulldown tab to display USA under "Country". Pulldown tab to display Texas under "State". Click search then click on tree-name to open. Select trees that have supporting documentation. Holler back if additional help required?
