Designation "Number exists*, Death F" in Texas Birth Index

Many people have been confused by the designation "Number exists***, **Death F" in the Father's Name Field in the Texas Birth Index.

I emailed the Texas Department of State Health Services and according to them:

This designation is actually **DEATH FILE NUMBER EXISTS***, and it means that the baby was deceased. At the time that the birth certificate was data entered, the only way to make the notation in the electronic record that the baby was deceased was to enter this in the father’s name fields. The actual birth certificate will show the name of the father if that information was available, and the birth certificate will be stamped "DECEASED."

This format is outdated, however, and no longer used.

Note: Several people have pointed out to me that Texas has made mistakes with this designation, so use good judgment and further research when you see this designation in the Index.

Jim J. Yarbrough, 61, a resident of Potter County for 41 years, died at his home in River Road, seven miles north of Amarillo, at 6:15 o’clock last night.

Funeral services will be held at 4:30 o’clock this afternoon from Boxwell Brothers Funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. E.B. Fincher, pastor of the Ellwood Park Presbyterian Church of which Mr. Yarbrough was a member.

Mr. Yarbrough was a native of Texas, born in Fannin County, and had been a rancher and farmer all his life.

Survivors are his widow, Della; five sons, Ishmeal, Clancie, J.J., J.P. and Noyal [Noel], all of Amarillo; three daughters, Mrs. V. Hoard, Memphis; Willie Joe and Lela Yarbrough, both of Amarillo; seven sisters, Mrs. T. Rowan, Mrs. O.A. Pitt, Mrs. W.W. Smith, Mrs. Clayton Reynolds and Mrs. E.C. Arterburn, all of Amarillo and Mrs. M.M. Poston, Washburn, and Mrs. H.E. Weatherred, Hereford and a brother, Buck Yarbrough, Laramie, Wyoming.

Wife in 1920 census was Esther b. TX abt 1903 lived in Yoakum Co he was 24 1st time he married.

Wife in 1930 census was Sarah Elizabeth b. TX 09 Dec 1894 lived in Yoakum Co, dtr Esther M Cleveland b. abt 1922 then they moved to Hemphill Co between 1935 & 1940. Sarah E Cleveland died in Hemphill Co 30 Dec 1977.

I presume Esther M was Esther's dtr unless she was Sarah Elizabeth's dtr from previous marriage. Find no death record for Esther Cleveland. Find no records of marriages.

Darrel Mace Mitchell was my uncle
His brother was Ransom Mills Mitchell, my father.
We have a disjointed family history I am trying to pull together from the remaining members. Darrel's brother Babe wrote a family history many years ago, I am still trying to get a copy. I found a living cousin. He is the son of Darrel's Sister Billy, so we have a chance. There are several of us out there.... but not connected.
You an I may be related. Darrel was a charismatic man and my favorite uncle. He was a Marine in WWII. He was a hell of a man and a good uncle to me.

Looking for AGNEW relatives of my father (Arthur) who were born in Waterbury, CT and moved to Cedarhurst, NY than believed to have migrated to the area in and around Amarillo, TX. between 1944-50 a man by the name of Sam Broyles visited his brother in Chuckey, TN and he inquired that their was an Agnew in Amarillo where he lived and wondered if my father was a kin too. My father never talked much about his brothers (Frank Felix, George) but his sister who moved to NYC after their mother died in 1923 visited him in Chuckey between 1939-60. They did not talk much about their family, so I am looking for info about (Frank or George V). My father's parents were John Agnew who was born in CT & Nellie Ellen Costello who was born in West Stockbridge, MA. John worked in the lumberyards in Waterbury from 1880 until is death in 1892. Ellen was a resident of Waterbury, CT for 43 and was well known in the city. Any information or assistance will be greatly appreciated. May God Bless!

Don't depend on the accuracy/consistency of census data especially birth locales. It'll sometimes vary even for the person you are researching. This is acutely noticeable when people lived near the borders of two states such as AR/MO, MO/IL, IN/OH, OK/AR, etc.

Wow, thanks, I never even noticed that it was a second marriage. I know they were married in 1905.

As for the parents, Nannie White was born in Tenn and the 1910 census for James S states that his mother was born in Ark. I did find an Edgar Bell in 1900 AR-Logan-Revilee-District 58 image 6 listed as a border. Parents birth states match James' 1910. It also listed his birthdate as Oct 1878. So not sure if Louis Edgar is Edgar or not yet.

Peeped at it earlier that's where I learned, first, Edgar's death date. It's a "stretch" but Louis E. Bell found 1910 Potter-Amarillo-District 0198-Image 46. James S. Bell found 1910 Potter-Amarillo-District 0197-Image 5. If they were brothers, then parents were Elijah L. Bell and Nannie E. White. They wed 29 Aug 1877 in Hope, Hempstead County, AR. They're found 1880 AR-Hempstead-De Roane-106-Image 45 minus James "Jim" S. That's why I asked if he was born after June 1880. If so, then he missed the census and was probably already married by 1900? 1910 census indicates he was on the second marriage. Louis Edgar Bell registered for WWI Draft in San Miguel, NM. His birth listed as 8 Oct 1878.

Unfortunately, the death certificate does not indicate a birth date. I got this information from the tombstone in Llano cemetery. Could be possible that it is Louis Edgar Bell buried next to him. Not sure what family was left in Amarillo in 1934 to see to him being transported and buried next to his brother. My Great Grandma remarried in 1919 and moved to Missouri. Her name was Estelle Jane.

My Great-grandfather was James "Jim" Bell. He was born in Ark. in 1880 and died in Amarillo Dec. 20, 1912. I have a copy of his birth certificate and have his tombstone, but no other information. He is buried next to his brother?? an Edgar Bell (guessing because born two years before in 1878 according to the tombstone). My Grandmother was only 1 1/2 years old when he died. If anyone can help I would sincerely appreciate it. This is as far as I can go on this line.

Charles L Young (1856) and John Samuel Young (1861) are the brothers of Major Goldsmith Young. You can find them listed in the 1870 Census in Bartow County Georgia. There are several sisters also listed and a mother named Nancy. In the 1880 Census Charles is married and the two brothers are living with he and his wife. I have found death certificates online for all 3 of these brothers. I would be interested in sharing information.

Clifford J. Lane is or was my uncle, he was an architect. He was one of five sons of Benjamin Franklin Lane of Amarillo when the sons were born. My father was the middle son, David. Three of the brothers, Clifford, David, and Dan, lived in Dallas by the early 1950's . The other two,Ben and Al (Albert) stayed in Amarillo.
