I'm related to Adrian Aguilar and we both are from different siblings of our Paternal GG grandfather. We also have Vasquez in our family. But, I'd have to go over my notes to tell you exactly their names. I do know that my great grandmother was a Vasquez, I believe her parents were
from Ojinaga, MX which is across the border from Presidio. I'll get back to you in a few days with more information.

I have many of the same surnames in my family tree (Viscaino, Ramirez, Lujan, Acosta, Montoya, Flotte, Galindo), so another suggestion is to look in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Julimez, Chihuahua, Meoqui, Chihuahaua, and Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua.

My apologies for not including a hyperlink to the websites in my last post. Usually, I only hyperlink a website if I am directing a person to a specific page. For example, a specific image of a baptism on Family Search. Search engines like Google and Bing have made URL's a thing of the past, for the most part.

Indeed the two subject websites are interesting and useful.
Have you tried looking at www.familysearch.com, they may have the information you are looking for. None of the names that you have asked about are not familiar to me. My family also is from that area, Presidio, Marfa, Shafter, but my family is quite large and I am having issues locating all of them. I'm hoping to find them all before my Dad gets too old.
-the genealogy is not the problem here--as a prof/family genealogist, I've done that, turned it over, with documents, to the family branch who are looking.---what is needed is personal info on familial health problems. The father/grandfather,d. in MD--the living son refused to answer mail/inquiry. So--tried this approach. There are 2 of his grandchildren with massive health issues not in the maternal line. Thank you for at least responding.

Pat, I had a touch of insomnia so spent the time with my other books. They are primarily Jeff Davis County and Fort Davis histories and sadly I did not find anything more to be of benefit to you.

It can be very frustrating when you know your people were in a place, and very probably were prominent citizens in the time frame, and little can be located about them.

I will keep your information and should I happen across anything else as I research, I will post it here.

Diane

Hello Pat,

The entry I sent this morning on J. Selman was the only thing in either volume for that name.

I have just reviewed both volumes and NONE of the other names you listed are included in these books. I was surprised because I am sure I have read something of the DeGraffenreids some where... I have some other books on this area and will check them tomorrow, just in case.

I am so sorry I didn't find more for you....

Diane

This was a wonderful new "look" into some history about John Selman. I am working on a family book and this adds to our history. Would there be any history in these books about his children?

Henry Smith Selman 1868-1949
William Mathis Selman 1870-1952
Margaretta Mazeene Etta Selman Alderson 1872-1950
John Marion Selman 1875-1937

or a: Adam Milton Lawrence/Laurence or Milton Adam Lawrence

All the above children were raised by John C. McGrew.

Thank you,
Pat Kennedy

In Chapter 8 of this book, Mrs. Thompson is discussing the lawlessness following an outbreak of Smallpox in February, 1879. The Lincoln County War in New Mexico caused uneasiness among the Indians who found a leader in Victorio, bringing bloodshed and devastation to the area for months to come. The lawlessness and outlaws were epitomized by Billy the Kid who was a member of a gang in New Mexico known as the Jesse Evans gang. This gang eventually moved on to Presidio County, committing fourteen assaults and robberies in less than two months. On May 21, 1880 the county attorney request the Texas Rangers to come to the aid of the beleaguered area. In the meantime the Graham brothers were caught and jailed at Fort Stockton.

"An agent of the Evans gang, by the name of J. Selman, applied for the job of jailor as no posse would guard the jail for fear of attack by the outlaws. J. Selman was appointed deputy -- a monstrous joke."

There is no further mention of Selman in this volume. I will keep looking for the other names.
Presidio County marriage in 1917

This question has probably been asked before, but is there a record of marriages for the time frame of 1916-1919 in Presidio County? I am trying to verify the marriage of Mary Ethel Midkiff to Walter I Wilson, and believe it occurred in 1917 in Presidio. Thanks for your help!!

Marty

Not sure it the county clerk will help you over the telephone. I can say that when I was there and looking for documents they were very helpful. Having been there several times now I can say that they are a small office and each time they tended to my need right away.

I think that my grandparents - Douglas Timothy "Tim" Dalton & Ercel O. Morrow may have met and married in Presidio County during the WWII era. Ercel was from Marfa and while Tim was from Illinois, he was part of the Army Air Corps during WWII and so I think they may have met when the Marfa Army Airfield was open.

If I contact the County Clerk's office, will they help me research the documents over the phone? And will I be able to order a copy of the marriage record through mail? Or is this something that I have to do in person?

Thanks!

My mother's grandfather was also Ramon Aguirre. That would mean that you and my mom were first cousins. Her name was Romelia, daughter of Carlos and Angelita (Aguirre) Herrera. Do you have any more information regarding their history?

According to the Records on FamilySearch.org. Charles W. Rude was born in July of 1858 in Indiana. His wife's name was Lula and their Residence in 1900 was at Justice Precints 1, 6-8 in Presidio, TX. But, I did not see where he died in Texas. I only saw that he went back to Indiana and died there. You might want to go to the Morman Records and research it there.

I'll also try and help you when I can.

Good Luck in your search for Ancestors!!

Obituary

Is there someone who does obit lookups in Marfa, TX? Charles W. Rude, a baker in that area according to the 1900 census, died of typhoid fever in June or July of that year. He had family back in Scott County, IN. His wife Lula died about a month later. I'd appreciate copies of the obituaries if they exist.

Bob Rhude
