I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. On 12 Nov 1926 Reagan County Constable George HAYS, 45, ejected Billie COATS, 34, from a dance at Best. COATS returned and shot HAYS and Miss Alva BEAM, 19, to death. COATS escaped. HAYS was reported to have been survived by his wife and son, Ray. HAYS was reported to have worked for 20 years as general manager at West Texas ranches of J. D. SUGG. I am searching for any surviving family, HAYS' place of burial, date of birth, and any disposition as to whether COATS was captured or prosecuted.
