Robertson Co deputy sheriff J.B. "Joe" WINFREY, d. 2 July 1898

I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. On 2 July 1898 Fred GANN shot and killed J.B. "Joe" WINFREY (referred to as a livery stable owner) in Franklin as he walked down the street. The grand jury indicted GANN and E.E. FRISBIE for the murder. On 21 July 1898 FRISBIE was tried and acquitted. On 30 July 1898 GANN was tried and acquitted. All of the newspaper accounts fail to state the motive for the slaying and none state WINFREY was killed because he was a deputy sheriff. WINFREY was married but had no children. One brother, Dick WINFREY, was a Dallas Co deputy sheriff, and another brother, R.B. WINFREY was a Dallas Co Commissioner. Joe WINFREY had been a constable and was reported to be a Robertson Co deputy sheriff. I am interested in locating any surviving family members, and any information as to the motive for the slaying.
