Cynthia Ann Parker was kidnapped by the Comanches. Her son, Quanah, was the most reknown chief of that tribe. Ironically, many Whites were somewhat proud of his ability to elude capture by the Army. Cynthia was returned to her family but yearned to rejoin the Comanches. It is a tragic tale! Google Quanah Parker and/or Red River War to learn more. The town of Quanah in Hardeman County was named for Cynthia's son. Comanche County was named for the tribe. Texas Tech University's nickname "Red Raiders" is a reference to the Comanche/Kiowa Tribes who were referred to as "Red Raiders of the Southern Plains". Prize-winning author, T. R. Fehrenbach, detailed their history in "Comanches". He was also the author of "Lonesome Dove".
