Thank you...I keep hoping someone has a dusty copy that doesn't mean anything to them. My great grandfather was superintendent of schools in 1900 and there are pictures of him in the book.

Lena's grave is only marked with a metal temporary tag. It is likely that his would have been marked in a similar fashion. Sometimes the temporary tags have the information stamped in the metal, other times the markings were marking labels, or other means that do not last long.

Not sure if it is current or not, but the phone number for the cemetery association was (325) 573-9902. They might be able to verify whether he is there or not.

I'm trying to locate burial information for Charles Chester McDaniel. He was born 26 Sep 1885 in Grayson County, Texas, and died 2 Aug 1963 in Lubbock, Texas. According to his death certificate, he was buried in Snyder Cemetery, Snyder, Texas. I cannot find him listed on any census of that cemetery, although his wife, Lena Berry McDaniel is buried there.
Thanks for any assistance.

Scurry County Genealogy Society

"Big Country Journal: Scurry County Genealogy Society becoming history"

Posted August 29, 2012
Abilene Reporter-News

SNYDER — Joanne Sterling laughed when she described genealogy as a sickness.

"And the sicker you get, the better you like it," she said with a chuckle.

Sterling was the first president of the Scurry County Genealogy Society.

"We started in June of 1988," she said. "I got to start out as their president, I guess I'm ending as their president."

She smiled at her own memories.

"But there's been a bunch of good ones in between," she said.

If genealogy really is a sickness, it seems age is the unfortunate cure. After nearly a quarter century, the group is disbanding for one simple reason.

"We don't have any young people coming in," Sterling said.

"We're just an older group and we can't get enough young people interested to take over what we've been doing all these years," said fellow charter member Jo Thrower.

The group estimated that at its height it had nearly 60 members, local and otherwise.

"For a while, we had more out-of-town members than we had local," said another member, Jo Flynn.

"When we started out, we met at this lady's house. She's been dead for years, but there were eight of us," Sterling said. "We were all really gung-ho about genealogy, we were young."

But in recent times, the group's numbers have dwindled away, numbering between 10 and 12 active members. Dutifully they've met through the years, gathering the last Tuesday of each month to share records, document findings and to discuss publishing their research in their annual periodical, White Buffalo Tales.

"It's really sad because we've put a lot of work and a lot of effort into this," said Frances Pitner. She and her husband, James, beginning in 1985, plotted grave sites row by row in Scurry County cemeteries over a four-year period — the roots of the group's research and formation.

"We thought it would be beneficial if they could find where the bodies lay," Pitner said.

The group has met in different locations over the years but has lately gotten together at the Scurry County Library. The genealogy section there contains a mixture of the library's own books and the society's research.

"The reason we did this was to promote interest in history — family history," Thrower said. "To preserve old records and things that were being thrown away."

While membership may be dwindling, the society's research is still in demand. The group keeps a log of visitors searching its records. Many come from not just Scurry County but as far away as San Francisco.

"We've done many things, we've purchased a lot of books that we've donated to the library," said Thrower.

She laughed and rolled her eyes.

"We did it by having lots of bake sales, those horrible bake sales," she said. "We also had bakeless sales."

"Everybody would just bring the money that they would have bought a cake with," said Sterling, who then laughed. "When you get gray hair, you start figuring out this stuff."

They also sold copies of White Buffalo Tales, the Pitners' cemetery guide and cookbooks.

Most of the reference material will remain where it is in the library when the group disbands, though the society plans to donate their original research to the Scurry County Museum.

Museum Director Daniel Schlegel spoke excitedly about the idea and the possibility of marrying the group's research with the other items donated to the museum by county residents. That way, he said, someone researching family history may discover more than just names and dates.

"We may have artifacts and pictures from those folks," he said.

Schlegel said the data will remain available to whomever wishes to use it for their own research. His ultimate goal is to have a research wing in the museum in which the genealogical society's efforts will play a significant role, much of it digitized for access via the Internet.

But a part of him thinks this isn't the last Scurry County has seen of the group. After all, even the ladies who are its members admit genealogy is a bug with a bite that won't ever be fully scratched.

"What I'm personally hoping is that they don't hang up their spurs," Schlegel said of the group. "Hopefully in a year or two we'll get the Genealogical Society reorganized and back again."

Sterling said the society's last meeting will be next month.

"We're printing our last publication, I'll take it in this week," she said. "That will be the end of that, we're bringing everything to a close."

Sterling shrugged her shoulders.

"It's just a phase of life that we're going through," she said. "Going out of, I guess.""It's been a big part of our lives for 24 years," Thrower said, adding with a laugh, "I'm going to have to join a gym now."

Link to story:
http://www.reporternews.com/news/2012/aug/29/big-country-jou...

I did not find record of a death certificate for her on FamilySearch. Burt is buried in the Hermleigh Cemetery next to Annis Angeline Standifer (possibly remarried after Mary's death?). There is a birth certificate (couldn't get it to load) on familysearch for a boy, born to Burt Standifer and Mary Sanders on 6 Apr 1914.

 Hi,
You don't say which of "Uncle Bill" and "Aunt Virda's"
seven children is your grandparent. Several of their children are still living, so the amount of online information about them is going to be protected for the sake of privacy. If your own grandparents are still living, they would probably be a source of information for you. If not, please e-mail me and I will send you what information I have. Most of it comes from Texas Birth and marriage listings online.
My two older sisters, both now deceased, played with Uncle Bill and Aunt Virda's girls when they were all children in Live Oak county.
Charlene

Information on his siblings is unwelcome? Their descendants might have the answers to questions puzzling you. Try California Death Index: Jimmy L. Bridgeman (22 Apr 1910 - 18 Mar 1968) died in Los Angeles County. Mother's maiden name "Byrd" agrees with the family found in Scurry County-Hattie (Byrd) Bridgeman (16 Dec 1889 - 21 Nov 1962) died in Lubbock per Mrs. Clayton Lawrence-daughter. Mrs. Lawrence was his sister Dinaneen Bridgeman married to Ward Clayton Lawrence. She's identified as "Durall" on 1920 and "Dinaween" on 1930. I'm not related.

My uncle photographed all the existing headstones in 2004,I believe January, of the Hermleigh Cemetery. There were no marked graves for a Goble. Unmarked is always a possibility, but I am not sure where you might find any documentation to verify that.
A 1916 Texas death certificate has a great aunt Ella Jane Stogner Goble dying in Scurry County. She was the wife John V. Goble. Death certificate states the Burial or Removal was to Hermleigh. I could not find her in the Hermleigh Cemetery unless it is an unmarked grave. Vitals: 27 Mar 1876 - 25 Nov 1916.
The husband remarries and is buried in Ft. Worth, Tx. in an unmarked grave at Laurel Land Memorial Park.
The spelling is Goble rather than Goebel.
Any help will be greatly appreciate.

Robert A.
Did Ira ever remarry after the divorce from Era? Did he have any other children besides James Ellis (he went by Ellis) Ethal Marie (she went by Marie)?

We know that Era was married at least 4 times and possibly 5. According to Ellis she was really afraid she was going to go to hell when she died for all the marriages and divorces. Ellis couldn't remember all the names but he was sure it was a minimum of 4 which probably means there was at least one husband between Lee Schooler and Dale Keneaster, if not two. My husband remembers Dale and always thought of him as his grandfather.

Era actually lived in McCamey when she died but was in a hospital in Odessa when she died.

Karen Butcher Pinkerton
Three years later? I'm not expecting a reply to this info! Inez K. Hamlett (SSDI: 22 Aug 1903 - 23 Mar 2004) received last benefits in Stephenville, Erath County. One of the "suggested records" is a link to her obit. There's no mention of her deceased husband or parents. I'll provide that data. Parents were Alonzo De Basco Kay (22 Oct 1873 - 27 Sep 1958) and Minnie Lou (nee: Stevenson) Kay (11 Oct 1878 - 9 Jun 1960). The eldest brother Eckward Cecil Kay (4 Sep 1896 - Sep 1981). Hubert Burnell Kay (17 Feb 1898 - 17 Jan 1941). Lavele Kay (6 Nov 1899 - 20 Apr 1967). Howard Kay (17 Nov 1901 - Aug 1967). I'm not related!

Dear Carol, I came across your message on
the Scurry County, Texas message board and
I am sure that you are asking about my
grandmother Alice Viola Price and her husband
Joseph Daniel Caldwell. It is an old message
from the year 2000 so you may already have your
information. Zoe Caldwell was my father's
sister and I visited your Father, Charlie,
near Atlanta , Georgia, in the 1960s. I have
some information about the family that I will
gladly share with you. Helen Anderson
sulross86@yahoo.com

Not sure if this is a connection: 1910 Census, Scurry, 3rd PCT. John C. Barnett and Emma V. Married 2 times, 2 children, 2 living. I have a John C. Barnett in my family and he is missing from 1870 till 1900, then no 1910 except for Scurry Co. A land document in Madison Co., Tx has his wife listed as V. Barnett. We never knew he had married until I started looking for the census. 1900 Census Madison Co., Tx Age 37, married 6 1/2 yrs, but no wife listed.
1920 Cenus, Age 58, Divorced,

My grandfather was married to Jessie Gee from Snyder who died in the early 20's as well as her father Samuel D (1923) I don't know if these are the same Gee's or not. I know that Mattie Gee was the mother of Jessie.
