Hello,

I am currently several chapters into writing a book about the 22nd Texas Infantry (aka Hubbard’s Regiment).

Since Smith County provided many of its soldiers, it is important to accurately document the families and the towns they called home.

I am looking for extra stories about the personal lives of soldiers, photos, etc …. If there is specific info you would like included, please let me know.

Any suggestions regarding contacts or information for research would be greatly appreciated. I intend on including A LOT of information about all its soldiers

Finally, if you are a direct descendant of a soldier in Hubbard’s Regiment, I will include your photo and info.

Of course, all submissions will be credited in the text of the book.

You may reach me at tpwardlaw@aol.com for additional information, text contributions, and photo contributions.

The book should be ready by the end of this year.

Thank you,
Trevor P.
Howdy and thanks for the information. Interesting thinking on Mary E. Kitchens may have been married or not to Driver. So is it possible that SP Driver's bio-dad is not William Driver?

Some info I knew but some I do not. I do not follow everything you state as I am an occasional family researcher and do not know the technical things you speak about. I edited my original post to fill in Mary E.'s maiden name that I learned from another of her descendants through Ella and Wesley Henson. (Born in Texas not TN)Wesley Turner Henson m. M.A.Claridge 6-19-1873, had four children with Margaret Alafair Claridge, b. 8-20-1857, d. 10-22-1884, possibly Freestone County, TX. Mary, Francis A., Wade H., Martha A. Henson. Sidney P. "Ella" Driver & Wesley Turner Henson had 10 children I have names for. (One census I found 1890 or 1900 had names I cannot account for in my family info)
Base upon Mary E. Kitchen's age and date of marriage to William A. Shahan and ages of his children I do not assume any of the Shahan children were also hers, nor did she have any in her 40s (possible but not likely) so perhaps she only gave birth to Sidney P. "Ella" Driver, but then it's hard to account for her claim of having "two" in 1900.

You probably have anything that I found, but will leave the info here for other bonifide researchers.

The 1880 Census of Not Stated, Smith Co, TX
Wm A. Shahan, age 47(1832/1833), Farmer, born Tennessee to both parents born in North Carolina
M.E., 39 (1840/1841) in Alabama, to father born in South Carolina, mother in Georgia
Martha, 21, born in IL
Andrew J, 18, IL
Julia, 16, IL
Elizabeth, 14, IL
Ella Driver, 10, step-dau, born in Texas
--All the children are identified as having father born in Tennessee, mother in Alabama, which would be the locations of these parents births...; however, census enumerations often identified the children of the current parents, even though their birth parents were born elsewhere.

There are MANY family trees showing Wesley Henson and family. None further identified "Ella" parents.

Wesley Turner Henson, born 13 Aug 1855 in TN, married Sidney Puella Driver, born 3 Feb 1870, died 16 April 1945 in Donley Co, TX. He had previously married Margaret Alafair Claridge in 1873. They had a number of children. He died on 11 Mar 1919 in Oklahoma.

There are also many family trees showing William Shahan and Elizabeth Driver.

I did a number of 1870 Census searches for Ella and Mary, with different names, spellings, to include first name only. I also searched for any ?river, ??iver, in the event the transcription was wrong. Most of the 1870 census was conducted between June and up to October, so "Ella" or other names should have been found.

My only "guess," The "Driver" family wasn't enumerated at all (or census page lost), the transcription is there but not under any thing I could have found. My search for any last name of both "could" have found Mary and daughter under any last name. My thought was Mary was married to another person in 1870, when Ella was born. Mary's marriage to "other" ended somehow, and she married "Driver" sometime between 1870 and 1878, and that marriage ended...OR, she was never married to Driver.

Due to the total number of family trees on the Henson family, there are a LOT of people looking for Ella's family.

findagrave.com shows a W. M. Driver, born 1819, died 1902, but I did NO RESEARCH on this person:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=dr...;

No need to comment... Your posting is old enough that you either found the information, or no one has any to share.

Hi,

I've looked in Ancestry and FamilySearch and William's marriage and death info aren't there.

Mrs. Sidney Puella hanson is the Ella Driver in the 1880 Smith Co. Census.

I'd contact the Smith County Clerk, www.smith-county.com/government/electedofficials/countyclerk... and ask how far back do their death and marriage records go.

The Smith County Records on Microfilm, www.tsl.state.tx.us/arc/local/smith.html provides a list of records for the county on microfilm at Texas A&M University-Commerce. You can go to your local library and request any film from this list. They have marriage records 1848-1951. Death records don't go back far enough but probate records do. Successful Searching!

Nancy Jerusha Stone and Elizabeth Stone

Who were these 2 Stone sisters?
Nancy Jerusha Stone was born about 1802 in South Carolina. She married about 1818
to Edward Colvin; Edward Colvin, born around 1798 in Chester County, South Carolina. The couple left Chester County, South Carolina shortly after the census of 1830 and moved to Green County, Alabama… one of their children Martha A. Colvin was born in 1833 in Alabama. So we know that Nancy Jerusha Stone was alive in 1833 in Alabama.
Edward Colvin went on to live until Feb 3, 1849 and died in Smith County, Texas. What took him to Texas? Where was Edward Colvin buried in Smith County, Texas?
Did Nancy Jerusha Stone make the move to Texas? Would anyone know when and where Nancy Jerusha Stone died and her place of burial?
Edward was mentioned June 27, 1846 (it is stated in document that Joseph Crosby's widow and the 3 orphans are several years now permanently in Alabama, and that the children's mother ,Elizabeth Stone Crosby, is sister in law of Edward Colvin.) at Pickens County, Alabama probate.
Elizabeth Stone, sister of Nancy Jerusha Stone was born between 1800 and 1810 in South Carolina and married Joseph Crosby (Crosby was born between 1800 and 1810 in South Carolina) They married between 1825 and 1830, judging the eldest daughter’s birthdate; Their children:
1. Emily A Crosby was born about October 17, 1829 at Chester County, South Carolina. Emily died August 30, 1893 at Pickens County, Alabama.
2. Amanda F Crosby was born in 1830 at Chester County, South Carolina.
3. Guthrie D. Crosby was born about 1833 at Chester County, South Carolina.

Joseph Crosby died intestate, before July 1833; and his estate settled in Chester County, South Carolina. Then as noted above, Elizabeth and the children relocated to Alabama.

I am almost certain that I have identified the father and mother of these 2 Stone sisters. But I need more evidence; Does anyone know more about them? How, when and where did they die? Any other records? documents? leads?
Where did these 2 sisters and their families live and where were they buried? Were there other Stone families in these areas, that they could be linked with ? It would be great to share research with other researchers.

I am seeking information on John R. Darsey (Dorsey) who resided in Smith County, Texas from the late 1850s until the time of his death on 30 Oct 1887. According to the 1880 Census, he was born in Georgia around 1820. He was best friends with Meredith Slatum Taylor also from Georgia. He was the father of Henry, Richard (Dick) and Texas (Tex) Dorsey. At the time of John Darsey his estate was valued at $1000.00. He left his entire estate to his three sons.

Any information on the family (parents or siblings) of John R. Darsey would be greatly appreciated.

Howdy from Austin, TX. I sent you a detailed note to the email listed on the 23rd and re-sent again today 10/26. Yes, we are of the same generation removed from William Miner Henson and Mary Green-Henson as they are my great-great-grandparents also. Still looking for siblings and parents of William Miner Henson however, I have found nothing on him before the 1840 US census from Blount County, AL. As I recall 1840, 1850 census pegs his DOB to be 1807, however 1860 census shows he shaved five years off his age. Probably looking for a younger wife after Mary Green-Henson died June 1860. William Miner Henson married Salley McGraw and they had his 17th child, Andrew? Henson a son 1862. W.M. Miner died 1866 Smith County, TX buried Ashbury Cemetary.

I have been searching the James Troy Johnson line. His death record shows his parents to be Frank Johnson and (unknown) Bronson. Francis used the name Frank on the 1920 census.
Confirmation of James Troy being the same James T, the name Frank was kept in the family: James Troy > Troy David > Frank Lamar Johnson.
I am assuming the name Lamar is a family name as well, and if that is the case, it provides some confirmation that Phillip Lemar Johnson buried in Wood county is the same Philip L.
Thanks for the helpful hints. I would love to hear how you are related. Please share if you make any more progress.

Clinton L Biggers and Winona Rainer

I found a marriage certificate online for Clinton L Biggers that married Miss Winona Rainer on May 26, 1934, in Tyler, Smith County, Texas. I also found online the 1934-35 Tyler Texas City Directory that lists Clinton L Biggers, oil field worker, and wife, Winona, at 213 North Poplar Avenue. I called the marriage office in Tyler and was told that they don't keep the applications for marriage that would have the parents names and ages of the ones getting married. I also cannot locate Clinton or Elizabeth on the 1940 census that gives where they lived in 1935 (this would help tremendously). I have searched TX, LA, AK, OK, but they could have been anywhere in the Southeast USA. I did find where a Winona Biggers married, but right now I can't remember where, when, or to whom - I am assuming this was the same Winona.

I am trying to determine if this is my Grandpa Clinton Lustre Biggers that was born on October 6, 1907, in Texas, and died August 29, 1988, in Morgan City, Louisiana. He was the son of Clarence W Biggers and Bertha Pearl Ledford.

He married in Oklahoma on February 20, 1930, to Ola Inez Johnson, but I do not know the date of their divorce. He married again in Louisiana on March 5, 1940, to Elizabeth Josephine Shuff (my Grandma) and they remained married until he died. He told my Grandma he had been married two other times, but she couldn't remember any except Ola that he had a child with that he never saw after they divorced.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Lisa
lisaattea@yahoo.com

True act of genealogical kindness. I appreciate that I am a recipient of your beneficence.
Thanks for the clue on Francis.
The 9th child was Amanda (Manda)Jane. She was b 7 Apr 1858, and I think she is the Amanda Irwin on the 1860 Mortality Tables for Smith County, Tx. She died April 1860 at age one of a liver complaint after being ill for 10 days.
My dad always said that his uncle was William Alexander Irwin (Uncle Alec). But I find his Civil War papers as Samuel Irwin. I sure didn't know he ever went by "Smith." My dad said Uncle Alec lived with John's family at times too.
A possible clue for Francis found on death certificate of Emma Cansler (15 Dec 1881 - 11 Jul 1946)? You mentioned nine kid? I have: William, Francis Marion, Mary, Martha, George, Francis, Ada, and John. Who was the ninth? What was William's "true" middle name? He's with Mary in 1910 Cherokee-Precinct 3-District 0015-Image 16 as Alex Irwin. In 1920 Cherokee-Precinct 3-District 24-Image 15, he's Alec Smith.

From past experience, the surname is often corrupted: "Erwin", "Ervin", "Irving", etc. Believe Martha/Mattie wed Jerry Lee Smith ca.1870-1878? Proof of that may have to come via their descendants. Lookup death certificates: Ophelia Martin (26 Sep 1878 - 9 Oct 1959), Harris Treo Smith (1885 - 11 Nov 1964), and Charlie Lee Smith (8 Jul 1887 - 28 Dec 1945). In 1880 Smith-Not Stated-096-Image 47, find J. L. Smith(27), Martha(25), and "Ophilia"(2). They were neighbors of S. S. Irwin and that's usually an indicator of kinship. Martha must have died prior to 1900? In Smith-Precinct 2-District 102-Image 20 find Lee J. Smith(47) widowed and head of household. Reversing middle and first names is also something to check on difficult searches. In 1910 Smith-Precinct 2-District 0074-Image 26,find Harris F. Smith(25) listed as brother-in-law in the household of Thomas P. "Mastin"(37) and "Aphelia"(31). The correct surname was Martin and Ophelia was Harris's sister. Nearby lived J. Lee Smith(57) and remarried eight years to Sarah E.(58) with son Chas. L. Smith(22).

My grandfather was John Samuel Irwin b 3 Aug 1869 in Smith Co, Tx. He mar Emma Jane Young 22 Mar 1896, and he died 15 Apr 1948. You know more about my family than I do. A Bible has marriage of Ada and John Thomas Ingram, his death, and names for some Miles children. But my dad thought her 2nd husband was a Bateman. Dad thought that Julia Frances Irwin was married to Miles (more names in the Bible), but my aunt recently told me that she was married to a Lancaster. As for the other children: William Alexander and Francis Marion never married; Mary Elizabeth mar James Jackson Barber; no knowledge of Martha Ann; Amanda Jane d. young; George Washington mar Susie Frances Hale. The Irwin surname has been very difficult to trace. I am aware they came from Indiana to Texas and not much more. Samuel S. Irwin and Jane Adams each had siblings who married each other. Thanks for the info about the Family Search death certs. I will look for them immediately. I would love to know any other info you have about them. Thanks, Annette.

Curious to know your grandpa's name? That was not his sister. Your Ada married #1 J. T. Ingram, 22 Mar 1883, then #2 James I. Miles, 1896. She died Ada A. Miles (12 Mar 1866 - 6 Sep 1916) in Johnson County, TX. The Ada in the original posting was born Charlotte Ada Felts (15 Mar 1874) to John Felts and Gayner Singletary. She died 8 Aug 1955 in Smith County. Both certificates viewable/printable https://familysearch.org/ What problems are you encountering researching the Irwin surname? Perhaps you can benefit from my experience or that of someone even more experienced? In a short span, I've located four death certificates for children born to Samuel S. Irwin and Jane Adams. An offer is on the table and I'm not related!
