Hi M, I know it's been a long time since this post, but I wanted to say hi. I too have been searching for information on Emma McCown (or McGowan, or McCowan) for a very long time, and so far have been unable to find anything on her. Emma was my great-great grandmother (I'm descended from her daughter Rosa). My grandmother, Rosa's daughter, still remembers her Aunt Rita well, and has told me stories about her.

I have enlisted the help of a genealogist friend, who also couldn't find anything at all on Emma. Apparently family lore says her parents were named "Bud" and "Betty," but nothing else could be found on them. My friend's advice is to request Emma and Andrew Henderson Rhea's marriage record from Stephen County; since Emma was only 14 when she married, someone should have had to sign for her, which means at least one parent's name could be on the document. I am going to try that and will let you know if I find anything.

Ranger Corporal G. MORPHIS enlisted in Stephens County on 25 May 1874 and was discharged on 15 October 1874. He was reportedly sick with malarial type fever and sent to Stephenville. I am trying to determine his date of birth, place of burial and where he died from fever. The 1880 Stephens County census reports Cornelius A. and Margaret A. MORPHIS.

If WWI Vet Hubert Allen Bryant married Johnson at a military facility (base, VA hospital, etc.)... it is possible the military facility did NOT submit their 1942 marriage paperwork to the county. (This almost happened to me).

I was more than very close to my grandmother Ila Eulalah (Ricks) Bryant until 1965. My grandmother and her 3-Bryant children... all lived near each other as well as 3 of her other 6-children from prior marriages. (The 3-daughter that lived out of state, often visited grandma Bryant as well as her Bryant-Johnson relatives).

I do NOT think my grandmother attended an out-of-state funeral in the 60's. If I recall correctly, grandma had medical problems with her heart during that time period.By early 1966 she had died from heart failure. I know my father John Jr. did not attend his uncle Hubert Bryant's funeral.

Note: My father (John Jr b-1924 CA) looks like his Uncle Hubert Allen Bryant (b-1894 TX online picture). They look EXACTLY alike AFTER my father became OLDER than the picture I posted online. There is absolutely NO doubt the two are related.

I am aware my grandmother DID stay in contact with her brother-in-law Hubert Allen and other Bryant family members. The Bryant-Johnson line may remember more details on the subject than I do. Grandmother also maintained a family Bible that I have not seen since childhood.

Ila Eulalah's 2nd and 3rd Bryant children (Hubert Allen and Ila Ellan) plus her 6-children from prior marriages...may or may not have attended their uncle Hubert's funeral. Her son Hubert always made an extra effort to stay very close to ALL his rslatives and bring them together for various occassions.

Our 3-family units NEVER use the terms... half siblings, step children, etc. (I would assume the Bryant-Johnson line had done the same... which may answer some of your questions as to who neices and nephews were at Hubert's funeral).

As for Martha E (Lindsey) Bryant, it would be possible she lived with other relatives after her son John Sr relocated to California (around 1922). I will keep an open mind on the subject matter.

But I do recall... hearing family members speak about their 2-Bryant grandparents plus their father John Sr... dying young... and/or younger than they should have. The Bryant children assumed they too would be doomed to an early death (which did not take place).

Yes. I just checked my notes and Blankenship was there too. We were not close to my Mother's side of the family and he died when I was 8 yrs. old so I never knew him. My mother, Jo Ann Curtis, was his granddaughter and she talked about him all the time. She and her siblings lived with him in Breckenridge for a while. They always called them, Big Daddy and Big Mother.

l

Rhonda, I'm glad you found my post and took the time to reply. I've found more information about this man in the last five years. I'm wondering if we're talking about the same person. Was your great-grandfather Judge J.W. Morrow? His dates are 1890-1965. That puts his death several years after your own birth. His wife was Maude Blankenship Morrow, whose dates are 1889-1951. If this is the same person, please e-mail me at scottwhitfield@yahoo.com. I have some photos I could e-mail you.

I have some land and probate records for Stephens Co., copied some years ago. Among the 'proof of heirship' documents for Odar Harris Bryant (from the Levi Current line) who married Banks S. Bryant, uncle of James Allen's sons, there is one document that has a E. Lindsay stating that he knew Odar was a granddaughter of Levi Current--just another connection with the Bryant group.

The Lindsay-Boggs group left Cooke/Montague Co. area about 1863 according to articles in the Stephens Co. history book and moved to Stephens Co. when the settlers were forted up against Indian raid. Interesting--they moved from one area that had Indian raids to another area with Indian raid, also when the Confederates were also hanging 'traitors' in the Cooke Co. area. In the Cooke/Montague area, another Bryant line settled.

A descendant of Banks and Odar had the information (Bible??) about the other children who did not survive between the 1870 and 1880 census records-hoping one of that family could add more information about James Allen's family, but so far, no success.

That obit for Hubert Allen mentioned that he and Mary Johnson were married in Sulphur, Oklahoma, but there is no marriage license there or surround counties. The obit mentioned nieces and nephews, but no names--were they his brother's children or his wife's nieces and nephews???

Since John W. had his mother with him during that time, could she have later lived with Hubert Allen when John W. went west??

The 1920 Bryant death in Dimmit County Texas, can NOT be my James Allen Byant. His 2-sons were NOT adults when he died. Thank you for trying to help.

I do NOT know when the James Allen Bryant family relocated to Catarina, Dimmit, Texas (other than it was after his 2-sons were born). My best GUESS for the family relocation would be between 1894-1901... minus time to build a house and fence plus establish his farm/ranch).

James' 2-sons were abt 5/6 & 9/10 yrs old, when their father died from the raid around 1900-1901. Many unmarked graves exist in the old Catarina Texas cemetery (including some MARKED Bryant graves). It is also possible James was burried on his farm/ranch. Their mother (Martha) relocated and is widowed on the 1910 Fisher TX census. When she relocated with her 2-sons, I do not know.

In 1900, 1,106 people lived in Dimmit County and the population was growing. (The county line is QUESTIONABLE during this time period).

If I recall READING Catarina Texas history correctly... there was a land boom caused by natural springs feeding farm lands plus the potential of a railroad being built to service sheep and cattle ranchers. The State of Texas was selling or giving away land to settlers (under the condition it would be developed), that I did NOT fully understand. By 1920 or so, the land boom was followed by a depression after the natural springs dried up plus lack of rain for several years. Undeveloped and/or abandon land was reclaimed. (After I recover from major surgery, I will seriously consider YOUR advice on hiring an expert to research Dimmit county records. The subject matter is above my research level even though I know where, when and how James died).

James' son (John William Bryant Sr b-21 March 1890 TX) often told his family stories to his 3-children (John Jr., Hubert Allen and Ila Ellen) plus his wife (Ila Eulalah). John Sr. had extremely strong feelings AGAINST the Catarina (land) TRUSTEE. The trustee WRONGLY stoled the land sometime between James' death date... and before John Sr. became an adult. (John Sr. using the term stoled in his story would imply, land records must exist that he strongly believed his children should have been entitled too). From Catarina history, their were alot of reasons the land would have been unethically stolen. What's done, can not be undone. However the truth can be found.

Another clue to James Allen Bryant's Catarina farm/ranch location: It is in an area that has blinding wind storms. James built a fence (from his open-field) leading directly back to his house. He and other farmers/ranchers used his fence to prevent becoming lost in wind storms.

John Sr's youngest child was 10 and his oldest was 17, when he died from an extended illness. Family history was important to a dying man. He spoke about being born in Texas and that his father came from Tennessee. His birth information was confirmed via his death certificate, medical records, and other official documents. His death informant was his married step daughter. (Ila Eulalah's child from a prior marriage).

John Sr.'s first and only marriage took place when he was 33-yrs old.

The story of James Allen Bryant and Martha E Lindsey Bryant should be viewed as clues VERSES factual (even though the town, county and state are solid leads). Details were previously with-held while researching for source documentation. Due to personal health issues, the story needed to become public. James' death date most likely explains the reason no 1900 family census record exist, etc. Other family stories have proven correct with only minor differances.

As for Martha E Lindsey Bryant, I believe she may have died in Texas before her son (John) relocated to California (without her). No family story exist on the subject matter other than... she died sooner than she should have. John's TX WWI draft reg card plus his CA medical records and his CA voter reg. indicate Martha died somewhere in Texas after 1917 and before 1922. This is based upon an educated assumption of the 3-records and should NOT be viewed as factual.
Have you requested or hired a researcher to examine the land records and probate records for Dimmit County?

The sons were born in Stephens Co. according to the WWI registration forms in the 1890's. When did they move to Dimmit County?

There were renegades who raided on both sides of the border in those days, made up of Mexican, Anglos, and Indian mixes--folks who would not work, just preyed on the working folks.

John William Bryant, Sr (b-21 March 1890 TX).... told my father... John William Bryant, Jr (b-1924 CA)... the following family story:

His parents (James Allen Bryant and Martha E Lindsey Bryant) owned a farm/ranch in Catarina Texas (Dimmit County). James died around 1900 from an Indian or Mexican raid. (My own search dates for this indian/mexican raid is extended to include years 1893-1909). After James' death, his land was put into trusteeship for his 2-sons. The trustee stoled the land from James' 2-sons before they became adults.

Todate, I have been UNABLE to find supporting source documentation online. Texas history indicates indian raids ended prior to 1893, but mexican raids continued for several years after 1893.

Due to upcoming major life events, I thought this family story should be told. Without source documentation, the family story should be viewed as a clue to where, when and how James Allen Bryant may have died.
I can not say when Martha E Lindsey or James Allen Bryant died. But there are STRONG CLUES to their death dates and locations via their son John William Bryant Sr records (b-21 March 1890 TX d-8 March 1942 CA). And, isn't that what researching is all about? Following the clues and then proving it with source documentation. Their son John William Bryant 1917 WWI draft card shows he is supporting his widow mother (Martha) in Texas. According to John's death & medical records, he moved from Texas into California around 1922. As to the reason John and his mother Martha are not living together, I can not say with hard proff. This one clue may STRONGLY indicate, Martha has died (which would agree with family stories that John and his parents died younger than they should have). John's 1924 voter reg confirms he living in Huntington CA and working in the oil fields. Later, John is married to Ila Eulalah Ricks. According to his 1930 Imperial CA census record, this is John's first and only marriage at age 33. His first child is born in Huntington, CA (Dec 1924). By 1928, John & his family have relocated to Imperial County CA because of his lung illness. His 3rd child is born in Imperial County (1931). By 1940, John and his family have relocated to Santa Ana CA for better medical care. (John is now working as a pipefitter according to his death and medical records. He and his wife buy a house on 3rd Street). By 1942 John has died from his lung illness. (His birth info, parents names plus their birth locations are listed on John's death and medical records which confirmed he is the son of Martha E Lindsey TX and James Allen Bryant TN). From all this, I have choosen to search for Martha E Lindsey's death record (or grave) between 1920-1922 in Texas (via family stories). As for James Allen Bryant, he had to have died after his last son was born in 1894 Texas (minus 1 year) and before his wife Martha becomes a widow in 1910 Texas. (From family stories, I know his sons were very young which narrows his death timeline for my search). Again I have choosen to search Texas for James Allen Bryant's death record or grave. I am also trying to search Texas land deeds (which is more than difficult for the type of infor I am seeking). There is a family story on Texas land that was put into a trust and taken away from the boys (by the trustee) prior to them becoming adults. Which sons I can not say. James Allen Bryant or poss his father John Summers Bryant. (Family stories have been found to be true with only minor differances for other related lines. This was a family that strongly believed in passing down family history verbally and correctly). I have NOT found any promising land deed or trust leads for James Allen Bryant. I am still searching. There is a 1875 land deed in Jack County Texas for a (farmer) John Bryant that I am currently researching. If confirmed, it would also narrow the timeline of John Summers Bryant death and location. But that is a BIG IF, and it is POSS that it is the WRONG John. (The 1885 Lamar Co TX land deed is DEFINTLY NOT the right farmer John S Bryant because of Callie's m-status in 1880 TX). Bottom line: The EVIDENCE shows Martha E Lindsey Bryant died 1917-1942 most likely in TX. James Allen Bryant died between 1893-1910 most likely in TX. A range of death dates for John Summers Bryant is between 1873-1880. Location is questionable WITHOUT a death record. grave, orbit or some other form of documentation. The Bryant-Johnson lines I have NOT researched as I should and that will be resolved in the future. What I find most interesting is, Hubert Allen Bryant married Faye Johnson the SAME YEAR his brother John Willliam Bryant Sr. died. Hum... Hubert's marriage sorta sounds like John and his mother Martha NOT living together after 1922 followed by John's marriage to Ila Eulalah Ricks. Anyway, John's grave is now available on Find A Grave website. Husband and father is written on his 1942 headstone, NOT the word son. Therefore, Martha Ellen Lindsey is NOT alive in 1942. (On the records I have, Martha E Lindsey's middle name looks like Ellen... but it is really difficult to read it via the handwritting). "My" John William Bryant Sr b-1890 TX named his children John Willian Jr, Hubert Allen and Ila Ellen. Do the names sound familur for this family line? And the names continue into the next generation just like prior generations. It is what it is.

Interesting situation: time and location for the deaths of Martha Ellen Lindsay Bryant and James Allen Bryant--when and where?

In Hubert Allen Bryant's obit, it was stated that he married his wife 1942 at Sulphur, Oklahoma. They were not married in Murray County, Ok. where Sulphur is located, although his wife had a brother living nearby and Hubert had some first cousins on his father's side also living nearby in this part of Oklahoma. So where did they marry? His wife's maiden name was Johnson and she had relatives around Breckenridge; Hubert's first cousin, George S. Emberlin, married a Johnson in Nevada who was from Texas... interesting, another Johnson?

Martha (Lindsey) Bryant was being supported by her son John W Bryant via his Stephens County Texas WWI Draft Card. By year 1922, John had relocated to Huntington CA without his mother and was working in the CA oil fields. This would indicate, something major had taken place with his mother Martha. What it was, I can not say. But it might be a clue as to the time period that Martha (Lindsey) Bryant died. As for John W Bryant, he married Ila Eulalah Ricks abt 1924, had 3-children and died at Orange County Hospital CA March 1942. I have John's certified death certificate and hospital records plus other source docs. They describe when he relocated to CA, his birth info, parent names and their location, work history, voter history and much more.

However, since then I realized that the location of the Hanlon Gasoline plant #2 would have been somewhere along county road 169 in northern Stephens COunty, south of Eliasville. I know that there were several (3 that I know of) Hanlon plants and so possibly there was another closer to Brekenridege that you mentioned. I know the plant itself is long gone, and I remember my dad taking me to the site back in the early 70's and it was gone then as well. I have had no luck finding the death certificate on familysearch.org and he isn't listed in any cemetery listing I have found online for the Harpersville cemetery. I have a picture of his headstone but the picture has been blown up and it distorted the clarity of the picture, so the writing on the headstone are barely legible.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions/information that one may have! They were both recorded in the 1920 census, single and living in Breckenridge, Stephens County, TX.
Their are multiple Hulse Immigrants. At least two lines come from England. The Hulsaert, Holsaert lines came from the Netherlands. Some of the lines are contested as to which immigrant they descended from. See www.Hulsenet.net for more information.
Albert Hulse
