John William POTTER 1825 SC - 1905 buried in Sonora City Cemetery.
He married 2nd Nancy Samantha Catherine HUFF, widow of William WILLIAMS and Seaborne Thomas FAMBROUGH.
She is also buried in Sonora City Cemetery, beside John, but has no marker.
This couple came to Sutton County from Coryell/Bell County area in the late 1880's. John had the first Blacksmith shop in Sonora.
He bought several lots west of town on a hill and one contained the only other water well besides on Courthouse Square. It was drilled to cut-down on the amount of livestock being driven through the middle of town to get water. It is my belief that this 2nd well was dug by William W. WELLMAKER, a life-long bachelor and long-time friend. Even after John's death, WELLMAKER moved to Del Rio, where John's son, Richard lived.
Richard Ellis POTTER had two of his last three children born in Sonora. My paternal grandmother was born in a tent pitched beside the POTTER home. A rare snowstorm hit the caprock that year in January 1897 and Alma May POTTER was born on a bearskin rug in a tent heated by a small woodstove, John brought out to tent. Richard's wife wouldn't go into the house, due to religious differences with Samantha, who apparent was Roman Catholic, by the photo of her showing her with a large white cross attached to what appears to be a Rosary.
Samantha's only son, A.C. (Andrew Clarence) FAMBROUGH learned the trade of a Blacksmith from his step-father, and from interviews of townspeople I met in 1989 and 1990, who remembered him, stated he was the finest mechanic in West Texas. A farmer could bring a broken machinery part and if he couldn't fix it, he would make them another. A.C. was thought to have married Julia CARPENTER, but it was later learned she was a FAMBROUGH cousin, who was a widow of a CARPENTER man.
Their children: Leslie Thomas FAMBROUGH, husband of Sylvia T. CAPPS; Mattie Jewel FAMBROUGH, wife of Elias Oliver SHEY, later she married Tom BUFORD.
I have photos of John, Samantha and Alma POTTER; Jack E. SHEY, son of Mattie & Elias; All taken in Sonora.
Looking forward to corresponding with anyone related or having knowledge of any of these folks.
