One caution about James Swisher's book is that he is pretty prejudiced about -- well -- everybody. Hardly anyone escapes: Mormons, Indians, Mexicans, even every person in one whole State (I think it was Alabama). He thought they were wild. But I guess this prejudice was a product of the times.
Other than that, and the sometimes tedious writing (I don't think it would have been bad writing if he'd had a professional editor, but I think he had no editor at all), it's really fairly decent writing considering his parents were probably not educated and he only had a sketchy education at that time.
