I've been studying my Swisher family from Champaign County, Ohio and I found this obituary and photograph of James Swisher (1849 - 1924) who died in Urbana, Ohio. The obituary states that Swisher County, Texas was named after him. This James Swisher was a Civil War hero, adventurer, writer and later the Champaign County, Ohio County Surveyor. I know that the official founder of Swisher County, Tx is said to have been a James Gibson Swisher, but I wonder if it could really be this other James instead? I'm in the process right now of getting copies of his books, notebooks, and manuscripts from the Ohio Historical Library. Below is where the obituary is listed on my genealogy site. NOTE: The obituary is four pages long. All of the pages are on my site page at the left; just click the small pages to enlarge them. The statement that Swisher County was named after this James Swisher is on the 4th page: http://www2.tribalpages.com/tribe/browse?userid=shasta4737&a...
Does anyone know anything about this James Swisher or any clues about this mystery?
Thanks for any help,
Susan E. Davis
