The week of July 16-21, 2012,should be called (unofficially) Genealogy Week in Lufkin, Texas, according to local avid genealogists. Three separate genealogy events all scheduled to be happening in that same week in Lufkin. The three events are a regular monthly meeting of the Angelina County Genealogical Society, an all day genealogy workshop, and the annual three day Angelina College Genealogy Conference.

The week of genealogy events will begin on Monday afternoon with the regular monthly meeting of the Angelina County Genealogical Society at 5 P.M. July 16, 2012 in the Community Meeting Room of Kurth Memorial Library, 706 Raguet Street, Lufkin, Texas 75904. The ACGS executive board will meet at 4 PM in the Community Meeting Room of Kurth Memorial Library. Executive board meetings are open to the ACGS membership.

The program will be presented by Greg Sanches on the History of the Texas Department of Public Safety. Mr. Sanches will include some information about his own Sanches family history and genealogy as researched an aunt and other Sanches relatives. Mr. Sanches, who recently retired from the TXDPS, has participated in numerous Civil War Re-enactment Events in both Union and Confederate uniform in Texas and other states. More recently Mr. Sanches won the Republican Primary Nomination for Angelina County Sheriff. If the County Democrat Party does not field another candidate for the office in the general election in November, Mr. Sanches will take office as Angelina County Sheriff in January.

Then on Wednesday, July 18, 2012, the ACGS will be hosting another one of its free all day genealogy party/workshops in the Ora Mcmullen Genealogy Research Room at the Kurth memorial Library. The library is open from 9AM to 6PM on Wednesdays. ACGS members will be available to help each other or other attendees with their genealogy research problems. Attendees can come and go as they please. Lunch will be on your own at nearby restaurants. If someone needs special help calling ahead for a worship reservation is advised.
