Am looking for any relations to the siblings of Melinda Patterson Houseworth Barnes, my great grandmother.1865-1940. She had nine siblings that I know of. She was the daughter of Andrew Patterson & Susan Hogan. Her brother Ruben Patterson, and family, lived nearby. Siblings were James, Anna, Martha, Robert, William, Mary, Thomas, Ruben & Harrison. As far as I know, all remained in Upshur County
Research indicates a probable first marriage to Jeptha Houseworth, and they had one daughter named Ida.
She had several sons with her 2nd husband, Charlie T Barnes

I am interested in the History of the Lafayette community. My dad, Earl James Miller, was born near there in 1922. According to his older sister, the doctor came out to the farm to deliver my dad and was killed in a buggy accident while returning to town. My dad's birth was never recorded and this was discovered when he joined the Navy during World War II. A delayed birth certificate was issued and my grandfather and aunt had to attest that the birth actually took place. Is there any published history of Lafayette?

Thanks,
Kathie Miller Sarchet
imcrafty@swbell.net

He was born about 1816 and would have died between 1880 - 1900 and the last census record was him living in Precinct 3, Upshur County, Texas. I know his son Thomas Jackson Metcalf, Jr. 1854 - 1943, is buried there and Jr's son Simeon A. and wife are buried there as well. Is it possible for other Metcalf's to be buried there? Is there any living Metcalf's in the area that I can talk to and share pics, records, and such??
Thank you,

Chris

Does anyone have a number that I can call for the Perryville Cemetery? I recently went to the cemetery and could not find the marker for my relative J. C. Connor. The numbers that are listed on the cemetery gate do not work for me. I cannot get anyone to answer the phone. I am interested in purchasing some tombstones for relatives buried there but do not know who to contact. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My name is Clay Steelman and I am currently writing a book concerning the Civil War life of the 17th Texas Dismounted Cavalry. Company G of this regiment was formed in Upshur County. I am looking for any informaiton from soldier history, mustering in service, personal diary accounts, etc.

I honestly believe that the combat history of the unit is a very interesting story....from mustering into service, capture at Arkansas Post, life as a POW, and their subsequent combat life after being released. I am really looking for any personal accounts from any soldiers in the 17th Texas.

If you have any information please contact me at TxSteel54@aol.com. Thanks.

Clay Steelman
Gilmer, Texas

Can anyone share a copy of the will of John Hamilton McNairy (1804-1853) of Upshur Co, TX? I am trying to confirm his 11 children by his two wives. He was important enough to have a Texas Historical Marker, but I can't identify all of the children correctly.

Additionally, in the 1850 Upshur County census a son D. H. (21) is shown. Following his name is female C. H. (15). Next is another son L. (16). Is C. H. a daughter OR the wife of D. H.? In 1860 a Caroline McNairy is shown with two young children living in the house hold with William Collier.

Any help will be appreciated!

Information on T Lawson, possibly Ty, family

I am trying to find anything I can on the family of T Lawson, could possibly have been Ty Lawson. He would have been born about 1836 and died after 1919. He was married to Elizabeth "Lizzie" last name unknown. Also to "M J" last name unknown. His children were William M, John A, Ralph L, and Flora.
I have copies of several land deeds from this area and family members have told me that there is family still in this area. A few years ago, some distant cousins came here doing family research but I have been unable to make any contact with them. They are also from this area.
I would love to know where our family comes from. My mother has tried for years and this is as far as we are able to get.
Thank you in advance for ANY information at all.

Christy Eckert
john.christy@hotmail.com

OBIT REQUEST - DELBERT H. HUMPHREY

If anyone has access to newspaper files, I need a copy or transcription of the obituary of Delbert H. Humphrey, b. 15 May 1899. d. 21 Mar. 1994 in Gilmer, Upshur Co. TX

One of my Davis ancestors married a Delbert Humphrey in Marion Co. They show on the 1930 Cass Co. census, living in Pct. 1. I believe the man described in the obituary is the same Delbert who married Lula Mae Williams. May Humphrey died in 1994 and is buried in Kellyville Cemetery, Marion Co. One son, Delbert Jr., lives somewhere in Oklahoma. I'm just trying to track down the rest of the family.

Thanks,
Steve Stone
An Andrew Jackson Davis Descendant

I would like any info concerning my Greatgrandfather, William D. Powell born Dec. 1879 Ga.? died in Upshur County 1880? He was married to Molly (Margariette) Johnson when? in Upshur County, Gilmer, Tx. I know that they both died young and left my grandfather Alonzo Powell in the wardship of an Aunt and Uncle (Sallie and Alonzo Boren)(Sallie was a Johnson prior to marriage)What I would like to find out is what caused William D. Powell's death and when. I know that Molly died 3yrs after the birth of my greatgrandfather and info so far gathered about that incident was complications from birth. Any info about William D. Powell would be appreciated. Thanks

ODOM, Thomas Bennett "T.B."

T.B. Odom appears in the 1880 US TX Census, Upshur Co, with Elizabeth J., wife. They had one son, William T. Odom, b. 1879; T.B. died in late 1899, and I can't find burial place. Also, in 1880 census, he is a neighbor to S.A. [Sarah] ODOM, widow of Emanuel ODOM. Query: Were T.B. and Emanuel related? Thomas Bennet Odom was born in GA, ca 1834, and previously married to Nancy Carolyn (McGlown) of GA, and lived in Escambia Co, AL, 1865-1867, when he deserted his family and left for TX. Also looking for Joseph F. ODOM, of Tyler, TX, still living. Please email me < estrohl@cox.net >
Thanks.

William Ayres Moody

I am continuing my search for connections to the Wolf family in Upshur County, Tx.

Does anyone have any info on William Ayres Moody whose family was located on 1850 Upshur Co. census? I am told that his wife, Nancy's, surname was Wolf. This family moved back to Scott Co., Ar. along with the Tobias W. Wolf family and is located close to other Wolf families there at the start of the Civil War. Two Moody sons, Henry and Marcus, served in the War along with Tobe Wolf in Co. D. of the 2nd Mounted Rifles. Tobe Wolf moved his family back to Upshur Co. after the War. I am told that Ayres Moody did, as well. Nancy Wolf Moody is said to have died about 1865, and Ayres remarried.

Tobe Wolf had three sisters who were in Upshur County, as well. They were Georgia Ann Wolf who m. George Jefferson Hoover, Ellen Caroline Wolf who m. Jesse Alex Sanders, and Martha Wolf who m. Levi Summers Midgett. Nancy Wolf Moody may have possibly been an aunt to these children.

Any info on these families would be greatly appreciated.

I have recently acquired some very old photos of families in Upshur Co. I am trying to identify all that I can with what very little information that has been found with them. I feel like I could identify about half the photos as in-laws and their ancestors if I could locate a marriage record. Is there anyone who would have access to marriage records in the 1950's? I need to find out who Wilma Gene Jones married in the mid-1950's. I believe he was a Squyers, but I don't know his first name. Also would be curious if they divorced, or if he died before she remarried a Lambeth in 1963, but that's not as important as his name. I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!!

The records of the county site of the county in which they are situated doubtless shows how the title stands at present.

With reference to your employment of Mr. Fulton and sending him $25.00 to represent you in the examination in the title to these lands is something with which this office has nothing to do and which is intirely outside of the business or province of the Commissioner. You would have to determine that matter yourself. Perhaps Hon. W. P. Lane, Comptroller, Austin, Texas can advise you by whom the taxes are paid on these lands or who renders them for taxation if you will write to him.

Lamar 1st 295-233
Fan. 1st. 1389, 1372 -1/2,
1707.
Bex. 1, 1695,
Milam 1st 1456
Har. 1st. 188
Callaway, Morriss.

Yours Truly,
J. T. Robison (handwritten signature)
Commissioner.

Now my comments:

I have no clue to a family connection to lands in Upshur County, TX. It would appear that the strange numbers and abbreviations at the letter's end somehow refer to Lamar, Fannin, Bexar, Milam, and Harris (or Harrison or Hardeman or Hardin or Hartley) Counties in TX? And I have no clue to any family connections to these other counties in TX either.

My gg-grandmother was Martha Jane Nelson (b. September 14, 1836 in Baldwin County, AL; d. February 1, 1912 in Baldwin County, AL). She married George W. Hall in 1855 in Baldwin County. My gg-grandfather George W. Hall was born January 5, 1827 in AL and died July 2, 1901 in Baldwin County, AL.

Martha was the daughter of Martha Allen (born about 1803 in Macon, GA, died 1850-1860 probably Baldwin or Mobile County, AL). I do not know the Mr. Nelson who was the younger Martha's father and the older Martha's husband. But the older Martha married William Blount in about 1838, and they had several children. William Blount evidently died 1860-1870 in Mobile County, AL.

I would appreciate any insights anyone can offer.

Blessings,

Ken Johnson
Waynesboro, MS

Mary Catherine TOMLINSON death certificate says she was b. 4 Apr 1857 in Gilmer, TX. I know she m. Larry NICHOLS 24 Aug 1875 in Valley Mills, Bosque, TX and had 9 children. She d. 14 Apr 1941 in Anson, Jones, TX. Looking for her parents. Name alternatively spelt Tumlinson by some records. Neither Mary TOMLINSON (age 12) in TX 1870 Fed Census (Hopkins Co; Karnes Co) seem to tie-off to this Mary, as they eventually married a CAPERS & LYONS respectively ... ugh!
