Trying to discover anything re: Burwell Hampton Hambrick's slaves. (also spelled Burrell and Hamrick / Hamric / Hammerich)


Appears he migrated from Alabama to Van Zandt County, Texas in 1851. Believe he may have also stayed in North Carolina (wife's family land?).

His plantation was 3,000 acres, and rumor has it that he deeded some of the land to ex-slaves after civil war (few years before he died around 1868). However cannot locate any record of such land deeds or will.

Appreciate hearing any information and also hearing from anyone researching same subject

Old Hambrick plantation home is currently the Rosewood bed and breakfast (on the border of Smith county & Van Zandt). Hambrick's slaves are said to have built plantation home.

Slave census shows about 40+ slaves held by B. H. Hambrick.

Was there a will when Burwell H. Hambrick died? Was any papers of his slave holdings kept by the family over the years? My husbands family is descended through slaves that were owned by Burwell Hambrick and were given their freedom and some land he owned after their emancipation. Land that was given to the town for the school in Redlands, Texas.

Family names being Jackson, Crawford, Spreasly, Kennedy, Floyd, Ricard, Robinson, Wilson. Thanks for any help. We are looking at all angles.
