The spelling of Bird or Byrd would be matter of choice. Enumerators would use either in census records.

As for William Edward Jones, Mamie was probably the one talking to the enumerator and she just didn't know or talked about where her inlaws were from. What about a death certificate for him ? Are they buried in Custer Co OK ?

Where do you find the 1880 census for the Hubbards and that Alexander Hubbard was the husband of Mary Evelyn/Evaline Byrd ?

When I poll the 1880 census I find a Medellar Hubbard age 7 born AR in Cache, Clay Co AR parents listed as Jerry from SC b. 1844 and Mary from NC b. 1855. There was also Charles Hubbard b. 1875 and Minnie b. 1878. There were no Hubbard's listed 1880 census in Greene Co AR.

1870 census in "Currahee", Habersham, GA finds Jerry E Hubbard 27 born SC and Mary E Hubbard 17 born NC 1853. Could the E be for "Elxander/Alexander" ?

You know that website that I gave you at the top of the page, pilot.familysearch, has located a death record for Carrie Jane Laney born in Paragould, Greene, Arkansas 29 Apr 1881 died in Merkel, Taylor Co TX 09 May 1966, father was Alec Hubbard mother Evelyn Byrd, buried Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel. She resided at 111 Cherry in Merkel, widow, Mrs. Joe (Mabel Laney) Bickley and Mrs. Floyd (Rosie L Laney) Davis were informants, she died at the Starr Nursing Home in Merkel.
