Harriet Mothershead was my mother and her book was mainly about the Sayles family. Her mother was Caroline Welcome Sayles who was the daughter of Henry Sayles and Harriet McAlpine. Henry Sayles was the son of John Welcome Sayles who married Mary Elizabeth Gillespie (daughter of Barry Gillespie). They lived on a plantation in Washington county which was inherited from her father. Sarah Jane Perry and W.K. mcAlpine were Harriet McAlpine's Parents. When Henry and Harriet married, they lived in Galveston. Henry had asthma and was advised to move to a dryer climate. So they moved their family of 5 boys to Abilene where my grandmother, Caroline was born and 4 more children after her.
Eventually, John and Mary moved to Abilene (Taylor county) to be near
Henry and his family. John and Henry practiced law together there,
Sayles Blvd. ran right past the house where my grandmother was born(at
S. 7th and Sayles). Henry donated the land which became Sayles Blvd.to the city of Abilene.
