I've been to Frelsburg digging around, our ancestors must have crossed paths. There is a St. Peter and St. Paul Catholic church there that has a lot of useful information as well as another catholic church. There is one the has a cemetery next to it (I think it is the St. P and P) and all of our Janish family is there. Happy Hunting!

Hi Kristin,

My mothers family has a similar history to yours. It seems many German and Bohemian families (especially Catholic) immigrated to Texas in the 1870s-1880s and settled in the Colorado and Fayette Counties. In my tree, it is the Rosse surname where I am stuck...they too came into the Frelsburg, Colorado County area.

There may not be gravestones but the churches or cemeteries may still have burial records. Clear Creek Cemetery near Oakland in Colorado has many unmarked graves and is where many from the Hahn area moved from.

Good luck on your search!

Juliet

Unfortunately, Emil Christ is a very common German/Czech/Austrian name. I"m aware of all of the Emil Christ's you've mentioned. Feel free to look at my trees I have specific notes on all of them :) The Frank and Anna marriage cert. you have is what I have. The 1900 census is the one I have but it's wrong b/c he was def born in 1883, but his mother could not speak any english so she may have said it wrong. Also, they could have reasons for showing telling their age differently we can't be aware of. I have both of the children's death certificates and head stones and other census records when they are married. Mary was born in 1885 and Emil was born in 1883.... why this is so wrong I do not know. They both seemed to follow each other and raise kids together - 1st going to Runnells County, then eventually in Harris county which is where most of us all live now. I have a family video from Frank and Anna's grandchild, Edna Christ, and she said Anna was married to a Micolek. Which confirms the name on their marriage reacord on Familysearch. She said Anna was married in the Old Country and her 1st child remained there. She didn't know what Anna's maiden name was or when they immigrated. It says in the 1900 census Anna immigrated in 1881 but you have to wonder how accurate that is since the birth dates were 2 years off... and she was married in Texas in 1880... I guess what I need to do is dig through cemeteries throughout Weimar and Wharton county to try to find graves with birth dates on them for Anna and Frank. They are not in findagrave. Any help is appreciated!!! :)

I found a few records for Emi Christ. Actually there are two Emil Christs. The older one's birthday was May 17, 1873 and the younger one was August 8, 1899...according to two WWI Draft Registration records, which were both in nearby Fayette County. Many of my ancestors came from Fayette and Colorado Counties and many moved from those places to Wharton County at the turn of the century. The younger Emil shows his middle name was "Anton": Emil Anton Christ.

It also shows a marriage record Emil Anton Christ to a Erna Beck on December 28, 1831.

There is an 1870 Census Record in Fayette County for a Frank Christ born in Austria arcound 1838. He is shown with a Lorina Christ born in 1822 (sister?) and Josepha Christ aged 15 (circa 1855).

But, I don't know if the above are related to your "Christs" because I did find the 1900 Wharton County record you mentioned with Anna, Amel, and Mary. In this record, it shows Amel as 19 years old, born in September 1881. It shows Anna born in Austria in June 1841 and Mary born in Texas in July 1884.

There is a death record for Anna Christ in Lavaca County on November 10, 1939.

There is also a marriage record for a "F. Christ and an Anna Micolek" in Fayette County on December 25, 1880. This would match with Amel's birth in the following year: 1881.

Also there is a record of a Mary Christ who married an Alfred Etlzer living in Hallettsville, Lavaca County, Texas on October 12, 1912. In some Census records she is listed as Annie Etzler, others as Mary but, the birth year is same.

The Etzlers are buried in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Lavaca County, Texas

But, I only found the Christs living in Wharton during 1900.

Juliet

Charles & Hilda Costenson died in Palacios, Matagorda Co. but spent many years in El Campo area.

We do not have any family currently living there. I show them living "in tact" in Weimer Texas in 1885 with two children (I assume they were there b/c the 2nd child's b.c. shows she was born in weimer) and then in 1900 Census the family is Wharton with the mother widowed. (Anna Christ with 2 children, Emil and Mary) http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1900usfedcen&a...

Since the US Census records were destroyed in 1890, I don't know if they were still there or not. I plan to call the county clerk's office tomorrow to see if they have these records. By 1910 I know they did not live there. Emil was married in 1909 in Frelsburg and moved to Rowena, and Mary was married in 1905 and moved to Fort Bend county, died in Houston area. I cannot find Anna Christ (mom) after the 1900 census. I can only find information on the kids.

This is my brick wall. I've been researching the Christs for a long time and I cannot figure further back than what I just stated. I know the mother's name was Anna Micolek (1st marriage name) and she immigrated from Bohemia Austria in 1880 ish time frame. Frank Christ is also from Bohemia but I don't know when he immigrated but I have a record of marriage for them in 1881 in Fayette County, Texas. Also close to this area...

I have 3 small children so I don't know when, but I plan to search through cemeteries up there soon. Let me know if I can search for something for you.

Hi Kristin,

DO you know if your husband still has any family living in the area? I'm doing lots of research on the families who lived in the Hahn Prairie (Precints 6 & 8) in Wharton County. I have gathered many old photos of the area and have researched many family names. I have not researched the Christ family name yet. I'm curious how long the family lived in the area? and what years? Hahn started in the late 1890s. My gr-gr-grandfather was he first postmaster in 1897. He died in 1919 and his wife, my gr-gr-grandmother then became post master until 1929. It was around this time that Hahn's population began to decline and people started moving "into town", meaning into El Campo 11 miles down the road. By 1950, I don't think there were hardly any people left in Hahn. The school, post office and grocery store stood for many years but, even the school they finally tore down about 5-10 years ago. :(

Juliet

Hi Again,

On the same page (close to top) there are (F.R.) Frank and Annie Ammann's family. Frank was a brother of Otto Amman who married Mary Molly Lampkin, who is my first cousin 4x removed. I checked two pages before and after the page your ancestors are on but, that was the only connection I could find. But, I know that my gr-gr-grandparents William Monroe Henderson are somewhere in that Census in Precinct 8.
Hi Mona,

Happy to help!

Hahn Village was located at the intersection of Farm Road (FM) 1160 and FM 2546. The area centered around Hahn was Precinct 6 and Precinct 8 was just to the west/northwest/southwest of Hahn Village proper, I believe.

Here is a link which describes how the various precincts were delineated in 1910: http://www.us-census.org/states/texas/teams/Wharton1910.htm I think these boundaries stayed the same from about 1880-1920. As you can see, reading the descriptions can be difficult, especially since most maps don't show geographical landmarks.

This is where my Environmental Science degree came in handy! :) I knew about historical topographic maps available from the USGS website: http://cida.usgs.gov/hqsp/apex/f?p=262:1:218960463877808

I think Precincts 6, 7, and 8 are on "parts" of the following four topographic maps:

Hahn, Texas 1965
Gobbler Creek, Texas 1965
Ganado NE, Texas 1965
Sheridan SE, Texas 1965

Pieced together, you'd put Sheridan SE in the top left corner, Hahn in the top right corner. Then under, you'd put Gandado NE in the bottom left corner (under Sheridan SE) and Gobbler Creek in the bottom right corner. I tried to attach the files but it won't let me attach PDFs. I can email them if you'd like: julietcmorgan@gmail.com

From that link to the 1910 Census delineations of the Precinct boundaries, it reads:

"Justice Precincts 6 and 8
Begin on County line where East Turkey creek crosses same; Thence down said creek to Pin Oak creek; Thence down Pin Oak creek to Sandies creek; Thence down Sandies creek to Jackson County line; Thence N ? with County line ...."

You can find where East Turkey Creek crosses the Wharton/Colorado County lines on the northwest portion of the Hahn map. This creek flows in a southeast direction where it joins with Pin Oak Creek. Pin Oak Creek flows in a southerly direction. It crosses over FM 2546 and then starts flowing in a southwesterly direction. You can see where it intersections with Sandies Creek in the southwest corner of the Hahn Map. You can follow Sandy Creek on the Ganado NE map to where it intersections with the Jackson County/Wharton County line. So, essentially, all that area to the west of those creek boundaries extending in NW,W, and SW directions to the Jackson/Colorado county lines forms Precincts 6 and 8.

Which Census records are the Schukar families listed? If we look, perhaps we will find that they were neighbors to some of my kinfolk? The Hendersons and Wigintons are the main familes. But I'm also related to the Corders, Glazes, Lucases, Lyons, Brittons, and other families who lived in the area. I'm planning in a big trip to Wharton County this Spring. My grandmother still lives there. She's going to take me out to the old farm sites of my ancestors so I can photograph them. If your ancestors lived nearby, perhaps I can find their farms as well? I'd be happy to photograph them, if I can. :)

I hope this helps!

Juliet

Juliet, Thank you! Several Schukar families lived there, but not for very long. Within about 5 years or so they moved to Iowa, Colorado, or back to Nebraska. I'm so happy to have an approximate location -- than you for replying!! Good luck in your searching!
Mona

1920 Census for Precinct 6 Wharton County

Hello,

It seems that Precinct 6 is missing from the U.S. Census Records for Wharton County in 1920. I had family living in this Precinct as well as Precincts 7 and 8 in Wharton County during this era. I can find records for the family in the other Precincts but not 6. I know they were living there at the time but, I can find no Census records to prove it. Does anyone know if there is another source on or off line that may have Precinct 6?

Thanks,
Juliet

Hahn Village

Hello,

I'm researching the now-extinct Hahn Village, about 12 miles northwest of El Campo, near the Colorado border. From what I understand, it started in the late 1890s but was mostly gone by 1950. When I started researching my ancestors who lived there, I quickly discovered that I had quite an extended family in that area (Precincts 6, 7, and 8) and many were buried in the Hahn Cemetery, which is still located there. From what I understand, the school, church, and store(s) are no longer there.

Unfortunately, many of the people who remember the community have passed on but, I'm hoping to find someone who either grew up there or had ties to the community that remembers it. I have a huge photo album that my gr-grandmother Maud Wiginton Henderson created in circa 1915-1920. There are about 150 photos in the album and many I cannot identify who are in the photo. I also have a 1926 photo of the students at the Hahn Community school. My grandfather Paul Henderson and his cousins, Willard and Evelyn Clark are in the photo as well. But, I cannot identify the other 20+ children in the photo and would love to be able to do this.

Maud's father, Gideon Elbert Wiginton was the Post Master there for about 20 years. He passed in 1919 during the Spanish Influenza epidemic. His wife, Eron Belle Palmer, continued his duties as Post Master there for sometime after. I'm trying to find out exactly the years each of them served as post master.

Other families that were there were the Corders, Brittons, Lampkins, Glazes, Lucas, Lyons, Ammann, Allenson, Smiths, Braddock, Davenport, Garner, Henderson, Jacobs, Meltons, Putnams, Rainoscheks, Youngs, Millicans, Clarks and others.

If anyone has family still living who would have grown up in Hahn, I would love to contact them and perhaps share my photos for help with identifying the people in the photos.

Thanks,
Juliet

My gr-gr-grandparents moved to this precinct around 1900 and brought my gr-grandfather and four of his siblings with them. There he met and married my gr-grandmother who was born in nearby Precinct 6. I think the nearest community was the Hahn Village or Hahn Community. I looked for the surname Schukar in the Hahn Cemetery but did not find any there. I'm researching this community because many of my ancestors lived there from 1890s through 1950s and beyond.

Hahn was located about 12 miles northwest of El Campo, near the Colorado County Line. In fact, many of the people in the Frels community in Colorado County moved to this area in what seems like a large group. Included were the Hendersons, my gr-gr-grandparents, and relatives of the Hendersons, including the Corders, Brittons, Lucas, Lee, Lyons, Jenkins, and Lampkins.

I don't remember the manuscript mentioning the book. I'm guessing of course but I think these manuscripts were either typed by or dictated to someone who was getting it first-hand from Jack Stubbs. The reason I feel that is true is that the names "Sallie Elim" and "Jim Cornet" are consistently misspelled throughout the first story--and so could not have been written by those people. The stories are typed so I am guessing they were typed no earlier than 1875, and probably years later. I think more like 1900.

I have transcribed only the first story. I put them away again, so I will take them out and transcribe the other two stories when I get time--one is about his living with the Indians.

My ex-husband (now deceased) said they were written by his grandfather. He was born in 1930, his mother around probably 1900...so it is certainly feasible that Jack Stubbs was his grandfather. It would be probably more productive to use regular email. Thanks.

I have a lot of data & information & stories, but am still looking for the "dime novel," Jack Stubbs, the Texas Cowboy written by Susan Henrietta (Sallie) Elam Cornett and James Cornett. If your stories are the same as the ones I have, you will see the book mentioned in one or two of them. I am also working on finding all the descendants of Jackson Stubbs' 14 children & have most of them. Diane

So interesting! In 1969 I married a man named R. G. Webb, Ft. Worth, Texas. While cleaning out his house for our move to Oregon, I found an old folder with badly typewritten pages on very faded paper written by Jack Stubbs. R. G. claimed these were written by his mother's father or grandfather (I can't remember). There are three stories. The first mentions Sallie Elim and Jim Cornet; another is about his life with the indians. They are written in first person and the language is so authentic that I have no doubt of it being written by the person who experienced it. I have transcribed the first story and am planning on transcribing the other two as soon as I get a chance. Obviously, this is the same Jack Stubbs. Are you interested in this? I wasn't sure if the Anna that died in Lavaca County was the same Annn (Apolena) that I found as being Anna Hubenak's mother. I found another one that died in 1896 in Fayette, Texas.

This can get so confusing as I want to get the correct information to be as accurate as possible.

Get prepared to spend hours "double" and "triple" checking your research! Seriously, there are many people with the same names and living in the same general vicinity at the same time. Start with lookup of death certificates at https://familysearch.org/ If you haven't already, setup a "free" user account. Joseph Hubenak, Sr (5 May 1875 - 14 Apr 1944) parents identified as "Ignatz" Hubenak and Rosie LNU. Anna Hubenak (2 Feb 1868 - 11 Jan 1939) parents identified as Joseph Orsak and "Apolena" LNU. Believe Appollonia/Appolena Kubir was Joseph Orsak's spouse but she's also referred to as "Anna". "Rozina"/Rosina Jurek was "Ignatz"/Ignac Hubenak's wife. The name Ignac was "paased" down so start with the person born ca 1854. Recommend you cross-check parental info on their chilren. Joseph Orsak (1839-1907) has a findagrave memorial. Anna Orsak (22 May 1845 - 17 Apr 1928) died in Lavaca County. I'm not related, simply trying to assist!

My great grand father was Louis Anton Hubenak. His parents were Joseph Hubenak and Anna Orsak. I am trying to go further back than that, but I can't find the correct parents to Joseph Hubenak and the correct parents to Anna Orsak.

My great grandfather came from a huge family and I believe his father's name was Ignac. Do you have any other information on him or their parents? I would really appreciate it.

No! I estimated their marriage date based on the 1930 Census "Age at first marriage". On Monday, call the County Clerks in Bell and Tom Green Counties. Request marriage lookup in the index for this couple in 1927. They should comply with your request 'cause all Texas' County Clerks have marriages indexed by Brides-by-time periods and by Grooms-by-time periods. http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/voter/cclerks.shtml#M
