My question was so obscure, I figured only an historical association would have any chance of answering it; however, I think I answered it myself.
Long story long, my ancestor was buried there in 1910. I saw a picture online of his grave and the headstone is pretty impressive. He's the only relative I have hit a wall with trying to trace, so I thought maybe there was a remote chance I could find out who paid for it, as his wife certainly couldn't have afforded it.
I've since surmised that it had to have been his wife's brother. I've also seen more pictures of the cemetery and it appears many of the headstones from that period are substantial. I figure someone in town may have been a stone mason or because it was on a stagecoach route they were able to get a good deal. :-)
