Descendants of Elizabeth (Russell) Archibald - Reunion Sept 8, 2012

This year is the 150th anniversary of LDS Pionner Elizabeth Russell Archibald's immigration to Utah.

Many people in Utah and Idaho are descended from Thomas and Elizabeth (Russell) Archibald. Thomas Archibald died in Scotland but Elizabeth Russell Archibald came to Wellsville with several of her children. Some went to Idaho and some went to Canada.

A family reunion for all descendants of Elizabeth Russell Archibald is being planned for Saturday, Sept 8, 2012 at the Wellsville, Utah bowery by cousin Brandon Sundeen. He is planning games for the younger children, sharing of family history info for the adults, followed by a memorial service at the Wellsville Cemetery. Food is POT LUCK. Bring your own lunch and all will share what they bring.

If you have any family heirlooms, photos, letters, etc.. pertaining to Elizabeth Russell Archibald or her immediate family, please bring them for viewing.

For more details contact Brandon Sundeen. Phone: 503-396-2178 OR email: brandonsundeen@gmail.com

Please help us get the word out. Pass this information on to all of your extended family so that they may attend if they are interested.

Linwood Cemetery > Manila Cemetery

Most of the people in the Linwood Cemetery were moved to the Manila Cemetery, about five miles west. There are several markers there with names on them commemorating those who were moved. For example, the Finch family, who were buried near Linwood, were moved to Manila and a marker indicates that fact. If the grave was unmarked, there is a chance that it was not moved. My mother was born at Linwood in 1902.

wanted: old information on Sheep Creek Ranch

We bought Sheep Creek Ranch. I am an archaeologist / historian blessed to be working for a private land owner who is very passionate about his ranch. Have no fear, the history of this enigmatic Dowd, and his legacy is being sifted through. Boren, you are loquacious, and I look forward to interviewing you, but doubt has been cast on your Dowd collection, so I have been forced to create a section on Empirical Data on Dowd, which is replicable, and that which I am only able to cite Boren's articles. Those articles are very well written, and I wont immediately cast them adrift..., but I am forced in the eyes of academia to stratify historic references by my ability to support them with other sources. Anybody who wishes to help me with my research, which will equate to a dissertation on steroids, is welcome.

Mr. Boren, greetings and saluations. My employer has purchased Sheep Creek Ranch, and he is very passionate about prehistory and history. As informal as this post is on ancestry.com, I apologize. You have worked for decades on one of the most fascinating time periods. You have personal connections to Cleophus Dowd's legacy not many people, well, no one else has. As you are aware, haters abound, and some people in academia have cast dispersion on a lot of your work. Well, be that as it may, I find your writing to be very interesting and easy to read. I believe whether or not I can ratify some of your articles with other sources, your tribal knowledge of this ranch and of your voluminous research, deserves respect, and I very much respect your insight.

I am creating a dissertation based on the Sheep Creek Ranch. We have already identified unrecorded prehistoric and historic sites. We are also equipped with more technology than most, i.e. minelab, trimble gps, we're professional surveyors and engineers, and have resources that are undefined. This ranch is on private land, so I dont have to adhere to Section 106, 110, what have you, but we do, because we care, rather because we have a need for answers.

I would love the opportunity to meet with you.

Hello - I'm the coordinator for Daggett county on the UTGenWeb site. I noticed that you're asking for information on several family names that appear on the Daggett Surname lookup page. I was wondering if you ever got a response to your inquiry, and if so, from whom?

If you'd be so kind as to respond to this post by emailing me at daggett.co.ut@gmail.com I'd appreciate it. I'm trying to update the site, and I'd like to know if anyone is interested in providing lookups as it appears the individual currently listed on the page for these surnames has abandoned the email address provided there.

Thank you for your help.

Shauna Moyes
Daggett County Coordinator

Ron,

I just posted Robert's obit and death certificate to my tree to show my sources as to where Robert was buried. His wife Ina was the informant on the certificate. As far as I know, Robert and Ina never had any children. The 1910 census entry of 2 children might have been a random mark written on the census form. Ina did get remarried after Robert's death but I could not find her grave. I have yet to order her death certificate. I did notice that some of Ina's relatives are buried at Burnt Fork, WY. It made me think that Robert's grave might have been moved there. Yet, I think in all probability that his remains are now under the waters of Flaming Gorge due to the likelihood that his grave went unmarked.

Thank you for looking into this

Tom

Aggie,

I found your family tree which shows Robert and his wife Ina. When you post, provide the link. It helps identify the criteria information (birth date, etc) and family information of the person you seek. It helps volunteers widen searches and also identifies what you already know. And, your ability in genealogy and computer systems, so you won't get patronizing suggestions:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/5002327/person/74024472?ssrc=

For the record, other researchers and archives:
Most of what I find, you have, or have seen yourself. I did throw some suggestions below, but you appear to have this knowledge.

Your tree shows Robert had lived in the Mountain Dell area of Unitah Co, UT, as shown in the 1900/1910 (This area of Daggett County was formed out of Unitah in 1918). In 1910 was living in Manila, as a Ranchman (employee). So, it appears he lived in the same general area for many years. Of note: was the Bucket O'Blood Saloon, which was near the Uncle Jack Robinson cabin (one of the first pioneers. The cabin is a feature of the Flaming Gorge Nat'l Recreation Area). The saloon was frequented by such outlaws as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid the McCarty boys and the Curry Gang

In the 1920 Census, he and his wife were living in Linwood, enumerated January 1920. He was a farmer/rents farm, rented his residence (may or may not have been the rented farm land). He died in Rock Springs, Sweetwater, WY 8 June 1920. Ina Mae (Sadlier), his wife (married Mar 1900 in WY), was living in Linwood, Daggett Co, UT in 1920, died 2 Dec 1935 in Burnt Fork, Sweetwater Co, WY. Your tree did not show children (Ina was about 33 when they married). The 1910 Census shows Ina had two living children, total number born not shown. None shown in the 1920 census.

Just for the possibility, I ran his name on the Bureau of Land Management to see if he had obtained land through the Homestead Act. None found.

I checked the Utah Deaths and Burials 1888-1946, no findings.

Yes, in WA State there were many cemeteries moved. The flooded ones are fully identified and many names identified as to where they were moved; but that doesn't help here. One of our great cemetery transcribers shows one cemetery near Kettle Falls (the entire old town was moved). Her transcription identifies 174 unidentified burials were removed to Inchelium, that cemetery transcription does identify some of the moved remains: I did check for similar data for Utah, without success. This area, due to low population, doesn't seem to have the interested persons to do such work.

The Manila Cemetery. It is shown on www.findagrave.com with
I did a check of names from the 1920 census showing Robert, against names in the Manila Cemetery. It appears Robert was one of the oldest on the forms. A Peter Miller, age 57 (1863) is on the census, a Peter Miller, born 1880 is in the cemetery, but doesn't appear to be the same person. An Amos Hill, age 63 is on the census, but not shown in Manila. So, IF any of these people died in Linwood and were buried there first, they don't show up in Manila either. The Manila Cemetery listing shows 461, it may not be a full transcription.

"IF" he was buried in Linwood, his record might have been lost by 1958+. Stones are lost, broken, unreadible, if he had one to begin with. His record at the new place of internment might have been lost, or not transcribed. Even those that are "fully" transcribed, graves are missed, stones broken, etc.

The Death Certificate. The name of the informant is important. IF it was a family member, they might have fully known where he was to be buried. A mistake on the form could have occured, or changes made to plans after it was written. I've seen this occur. The cost of transportation, burial expense, etc.

Location. He had family, or Ina's family in Wyoming, per your records. The DC might have identified cause of death, if he died to be with family or just sudden accident or health related. If they owned a ranch, sometimes burial occured there. Ina's place of burial should also be checked, I've seen the "lost" suddenly appear in such a case.

The Bureau of Reclamation. They don't remove/replace cemeteries. They contract such work. There probably isn't any record other than a contract, payment. The name of the company probably won't do any good. But, it might help you knowing the remains were moved. It also might identify IF there was a cemetery there anyway. I checked a bunch of records. The US Geological Survey identified Linwood as being Historical, but no Historical Cemetery was listed. From reading online data, some of the residences were just burned rather than moving/taken down.

Newspaper. Since he lived in this area for at least 20 years, the local newspaper (if they had one) "might" have identified "something" about him. Obits were not as common then, or even the same type. A true obituary (by definition, especially then) was written by a reporter about the rich, famous, infamous, or victim of accident or crime. A death notice might appear where he died, or in Linwood, area.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Charles Philbrick was the son of Jim Philbrick, deputy sheriff of Sweetwater County, Wyo. in the 1880's. Jim Philbrick once went into Brown's Park, a notorious outlaw stronghold, to arrest the black rustler Isom Dart. While transporting him to Rock Springs, the buckboard in which they were riding overturned on an embankment and Philbrick was knocked unconscious. Isom, a huge man, lifted the buckboard off Philbrick and took him into Rock Springs for medical attention, earning Philbrick's great respect. He arranged for Isom Dart's release shortly thereafter. I have files on Philbrick, Finch, Stoll, Hereford, Schofield, and many other early settlers in the Daggett County region.

wanted Charles Philbrick family of UT & MT

I am interested in more information on the Philbrick family in Wyoming, Utah, and vicinity, especially information about Pearl's father Charles and his descendants. More importantly, I would like to know when and where Charles was born and who his parents were.

I know that I can search the census and other records on my own, and will do so if necessary, but I'm hoping that someone has already done that and is willing to share what they have found.

I am not descended from this Philbrick line and am not researching it per se; I am merely collecting information for the Philbrick/Philbrook Research Group which is trying to identify all the decesdants of Thomas Philbrick, the emigrant from England. We maintain a massive database of information that you can access for free at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nvjack/fylbrigg/index.htm

If you have any Philbrick information you are willing to share, it will be appreciated.

Merry Christmas,

Nevada Jack Ralph in Carson City
PPRG Research Specialist

Philbrick, Zimmerman & Petre family information

I am not a decendent of this family either, but I did personally know some of them as a young child, so I know what I am looking for in the census.
First off most of them lived around Green River, Wyoming, Sweetwater county. Green River was a railroad town and Jack Zimmerman and Howard Petre both worked for the railroad. Nels Philbrick married Mable V. Williams and she was from a ranching family. The family ranch was covered with water when the Flaming Gorge dam was built. He moved the old ranch house (that belonged to the Williams family) to Manila and they lived in it until they died. Mable was the county health nurse there for many years, the only doctor the town had at one time was Fay W. Tinker who died in 1933 and she attend to people that were ill. Nells operated a gas station and repair shop for many years. In the obituarty of Pearl Zimmermans she mentioned the family cabin, which was on the mountain south of Manila Utah.
According the the 1920 Census of Sweetwater County

John Jr. Widic was age 26, he was morn in Austria and immigrated to the US in 1905
Pearl E. (Philbrick) was age 18 born in WY
Elmer John Widic the son was age 4 months and 12 days

Charles Philbrick age 52 born in WY
Charles Jr. age 14 born in WY
Ada age 16 born in WY
Nels age 8 born in WY
Emma age 70 born in England (she is listed as the mother and I assume that she was Charles Philbrick SR mother as the age difference.)
Anna M. Jensen is not listed in this census, and the reason for that is that she appears in the daggett county Utah census, (I assume that she divorced Charles Philbrick SR.)
Daggett County Utah 1820 census
Frank J. Schofield born 1887
Anna M. Schofield born 1883
John C. Philbrick born 1909

1930 Census Sweetwater County
Howard Petre born 1896
Charolette J (Philbrick) Petre born 1905
June C. Petre born 1923 is the daughter

Some other information:
According to the Family History Center:
Anna Jensen married Frank J. Schofield about 1919

Charolette Janet Philbrick born about 1900, which means anywhere from 1900 to 1910 in Echo Summit county Utah (which was also a railroad town) at the time married Nicholas Howard Petre in 1921, he was born 1896 in Echo. According to the information they were married in Echo.
Howard Petre appears in the 1920 census in Sweetwater county his age is 24 and he is a railroad clerk.

This is my own information and knowledge:
Nels Philbrick and his wife Mable never did have any children. Charolette and Howard Petre had 2 children June and a son Dean. Dean lived in Green River. June lived somewhere in Nebraska and had 2 daughters that every so often in the summer would stay with Charolette for a couple of weeks. Dean was several years younger than June.

Good luck with your Philbrick research feel free to email me at jmmiller@ndsupernet.com

You may want to try reading the sweetwater county wyoming census to locate the Philbrick family. You will find them posted on the US Gen-web project under the state of wyoming. I was a child living in daggett county in the 1950's and there was a Nels Philbrick who was married to Mabel Williamson he had sisters who lived in Green River, and one of the was Charolette who was married to Howard Petry. Another one was Pearl who was married to ? Zimmerman. I knew both of them. As for Alvin Schofeild there were only 2 familys living there at that time and I do not think that he was one of them.

Dear Mrs. Bateman:

I apologize for taking so long to answer your last inquiry about Uncle Frank Schofield. I have been away for a while. I am going through my files for the Schofield information and will send it to you as soon as I locate it. It has been filed away for many years. I have not heard of the seizures you mentioned in other members of the family, at least in any of the Schofields I have known. Perhaps it was inherited on a maternal line. I found it interesting that one of your line of interest was named Jonathan, inasmuch as that was the name of Thomas Schofield's father -- Jonathan md Hannah Heywood. I will send you the additional info. as soon as possible. I have not forgotten you.

Respectfully yours,
Kerry Ross Boren

I am not a descendant of the Schofield family, but part of the Tinker family that lived there. When I think of the Schofield family I do remember another Schofield family that lived there and maybe they might be a relative of Keiths. The lady that I remember worked in the school lunch room and her name was Audrey but she was married to a Schofield, and I do not remember which one. I also knew Averil so I really am not getting names mixed up.

I am interested in any personal info about Frank and his family. The census says he was a farmer but what did he grow? How often did they go to the rodeo? Did you know his son, Keith(aka Barney). Keith's middle name is Alvin or Alvan(I've seen it spelled both ways and don't know which is correct. Keith's son, Jonathan Frank Schofield, my son's maternal grandfather, had petit mal seizures when he was about 7 and my son also had them and grew out of them ina couple of years just like Jonathan. It skipped a generation because none of Jonathan's kids had them. I'm curious to know if the seizures came down thru Keith, if there are any family stories or other Schofields known to have had them? Thank you for any help you can give me.

He was the son of Thomas Schofield and Mona Henrietta Reid. Thomas was born in 1826 in Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancs., Eng. and died in 1898 In Beaver, Utah. Thomas was the son of Jonathan Schofield and Hannah Heywood. Hannah was the niece of Peter Heywood of Mutiny on the Bounty fame. Uncle Frank Schofield was born in Beaver while his father Thomas was in hiding at Robbers Roost to aboid Federal Marshals for polygamy. I have the birth dates and other information, but no in front of me. I will try to find them and post them to you asap.
The sites you inquire about were named in honor of Cleophas Joseph Dowd (1856-1897). Dowd's grave, together with two ofhis children, are on his old Canyon Ranch inSheep Creek Canyon, south of Manila, Utah. I knew most of Dowd's children very well. His grandson, James O'Dowd (who adopted the old spelling of the name), died recently, but his widdow lives in California. I co-authored a manuscript on the Dowd family in conjunction with James O'Dowd. Will be glad to share any information.

I am looking for information on Cleophas J Dowd.

I am doing research on Brown's Hole and the People who lived there. According to Kerry Ross Boren, the Author of Utah's Most Enigmatic Lawman, Cleophas and Jesse James had a shooting contest in Brown's Hole. Do you have any information on this contest or any other information on the James Brothers visiting Brown's Hole or riding with The Parrott Gang when they robbed the Union Pacific train #3 near Carbon, Wyoming?
