There is a wonderful history of Tooele County in nine volumes, written over many years by George Tripp, that resides in the Tooele Public Library (Reference Section), the Utah Historical Society and a few other places. Unfortunately, it was never published for general distribution. I have used it in Tooele and have found terrific amounts of information about relatives in the Tooele area. Much of it is taken from newspaper accounts of the time for various events. The history covers the early settlements (1849) to 1890 or so, and is amazingly detailed.
An example is that I was able to read of the accidental death of my GGGrandfather, Benjamin Thompson Stewart, in 1877 when he and his wagon toppled off Soldier's Bridge south of Tooele.
I suspect that a full reporting of Leonard I. Smith's demise and accounts surrounding it would be in it.
