Thank you so much for your response. I have pretty much been working on these details as you have described them. I'm still working on the directories for this time period in Ogden, Salt Lake & Montana...but having a bit of difficulty accessing them...ordering microfilms is expensive over here.
In any case, You found what I did on C A Hambly and Alice Tauchell/Tauchett. I even checked on the "US Commissioner" who married them trying to verify if these two were related to him and just called in to sign as witnesses to the marriage. That does not appear to be the case. But unfortunately, John Simmons with only a birth year is VERY hard to search on. (I got the birth year off of the local marriage records...apparently there are two different sets, one that stays in the county and one that got sent elsewhere. Ancestry has one, the microfilms available through the Family History Library in Salt Lake have the other.) So I have two different records with the information and the good thing is that what is hard to read on one, is very clear on the other. All except Miss Alice Tauchett/Tanchett. She clearly signs her name with two t's...but whether a "u" or an "n" follows that "a"...I cannot tell. But haven't found anyone at all that could be her...so I really don't know what to say. Perhaps this Canadian connection is what I will have to work on some more.
I do recognize that Alice could be misstating the facts of her first marriage when she marries LeRoy Mercer. But until we find some record of her John Simmons...we won't be able to tell.
With this family...anything could be true!
There is as I mentioned another John Symons in Salt Lake City and I cannot rule him out. I haven't found much on him, though other than a couple of censuses. Which makes him a more likely possibility than John James Simmons. Especially, as Minnie was born in Salt Lake City. I've even contacted churches in Salt Lake City looking for Minnie's christening...so far nothing has turned up for her.
Your point about facts is good...but the flip side is sometimes too much information clouds the data as well. So I usually try both ways, very little first, then more details...especially as I find more information about the people I'm looking for. Sometimes it is hard to separate the relevant facts from the irrelevant ones.
I had a search done in the Lewis and Clark county records in Montana, where Alice married LeRoy Mercer, but nothing turned up...now back to Bozeman where I started this whole mess by finding her death and burial location. Maybe there's something more that I'm missing there?
Thanks for your help!
