My 2nd great-grandfather Solomon Hayford of Putnam, Washington, New York was listed in the 1840 census with wife probably Elizabeth (Paterson)and 3 male children and 5 female children. I found his death recorded as "died at the home of Loren Cutts in Orwell, Addison, VT on 14 April 1842." I haven't been able to find wife or children after 1840. In information about the "sale of the poor" I realize that he may have been in the care of the town poor and perhaps the children were fostered out or adopted. Do you have information on records or where to find records of the poor or of orphaned children going back to the 1840s?
