Peter McDonald family 1850

Surnames: McDonald; McCawley
Hello Listers; I am working on McDonalds of Norfolk Co., Ontario, Canada. It appears that members of this family were in Middlebury, Addison, Vermont in 1850. They are as follows:
McDonald, Peter Laborer b. Ireland RC 60 yrs; Catherine 56 b Ireland; Julia 19 b. Ireland; Thomas 16 b Ireland; Catherine 15 b Ireland. Next family is ? McCawley 36; Ann 32; & children Mary Ann 14, Margaret 11 b US; Wm 10 b US; Unknown 8 b US; Julia 4 b US. 10 yrs later, in 1860-61 these families show up in census for Windham Tsp., Norfolk Co., Canada West (Ontario). We think Ann McCawley is Nancy Ann McDonald b Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan, N. Ireland. After 1860 we lose track of Peter.
Question: how long did these families live in Vermont? When did they arrive? Also, any info on Irish in Middlebury at mid-19th century is appreciated. From the bit of reading I have done this does not look like a place RC would settle. Interesting thou' that son Thomas shows up as Methodist. A conversion? Also seems odd for these folks to end up in Norfolk on n. shore of Lake Erie? How & when did they get there? There may be a simple answer. Do you know if anyone promoted out-migration from this area to S. Ontario about 1850?
Thanks for your time?
