You may already be aware of this, but just in case you aren't... C.E. stands for Canada East, otherwise known as Lower Canada and also the Eastern Townships of Quebec.

I do know that there are Sorell's there. Look for anything that remotely sounds close as there are many variations to the spelling. For example, LaRose may be Lareaux.

If you post to one of the Quebec boards, someone may be able to help with the French spellings and pronunciation. Many of our French-Canadian ancestors were enumerated on U.S. census records as illiterate. I suspect there was a language and or pronunciation barrier. U.S. clerks spelt the names as they sounded to them.

This may also account for discrepancies in ages and other data on the records, which was very common in my research.

Good Luck!

I have been looking for a list of newspapers that were published around 1880-1890 and would likely have news from Addison County. I plan to try the Burlington Free Press since it was probably had the largest distribution but it would be nice to know what other papers might be available so I can look for sources of old copies/microfilm.

The likely places for a Ferrisburgh obit at that time period would be the Addison Independent out of Middlebury or the Burlington Free Press out of Burlington. I'm not sure whether either have obits on line. Burlington's are can be searched at a few locations on film. The state library in Montpelier also has many VT papers on film. It is possible that the Sheldon Museum in Middlebury keeps hard copies of the Independent.

The online index to Sanford Witherell's book on Cornwell homes and people shows three entries for the surname Bissette: William, Peter, and Joseph. There are no listings under Bassett.

http://midddigital.middlebury.edu/cornwall/WitherellIndex.ht...

The entries in the book, however, are merely names of those who bought and sold lots/homes with nothing on family members, dates, or relationships. The earliest of the Bissettes in this book would appear to be William going back to second half of the 19th century.

I am a Piper descendant but not from Daniel and Elvira. Daniel's great grandfather Piper was Joseph who md Esther Wright, and I am descended in that line.

I wish I could identify the source of the info I posted for you, but I do not find any notes identifying the source. Most of what I have on the Pipers came from either the State of Vermont records or from two family sources, a typed genealogy manuscript that a cousin produced many years ago and a scrap book of news clippings regarding family members kept by my great grandmother, who was a Piper. I'm afraid that that's all I can offer. Since these individuals are not in my direct line, I suspect that this info came from the Vermont State records, but I'm not sure. I would take the info as a clue to help you in further searching.

I do have information on Elvira "Hier" because she is connected to my Piper ancestors.

The information I have is that Elvira was the daughter of Shubal and Polly Hier, and that she had a sister, Philene, who married a brother (John Piper) of Elvira's husband, Daniel Piper. Daniel and John were sons of Francis and Abigail (Goodnoe) Piper. Francis was born 1780 in Acton, Mass, son of Joseph Piper and Elizabeth Hayward. Daniel was born 1813 in Sharon, New Hampshire.

This is all the data that I have. My recollection is that I have run into this Hier family when researching in Middlebury. A number of this Piper family moved from Acton, Mass via Weston, VT and Hancock, VT to the Middlebury/Cornwall area in Addison County.

Looking for info on Elvira P. Heir (b.about 1814 death unknown, probably before 1860). She was most likely born in Addison/Middlebury as it looks like she spent a good chunk of her life there. I did a quick look at the boards and it seems like Heir is a large family (or at least the decedents are busy ones!). Elvira married a Daniel "Howard" Piper. If anyone can point me in the direction of her ancestors or relations I'd appreciate it!

I have been searching for the parents of Nabby Hill of Addison County for years. She married Joseph Hill, also from Addison County, sometime before 1815 when her daughter Rachel Levina Hill was born. According to later census, she was born in 1792/1792 in Connecticut.

Her daughter Rachel Levina married Antoine Lore in 1831 in Addison County. They subsequently moved to Warren Co., PA.

Nabby and Joseph Hill moved to Waukegan Illinois in either 1842 or 1845. They had two other known children, but there may have been more, Lucia born in 1827 and Rollin born in 1836.

I recently found a tree on Ancestry, with no documents, that says that Nabby’s parents were Gershom Hall and Dorcas Richardson of Addison County. I tried to contact the tree owner with no luck. Does anyone have any information about the Hall family and if they had a daughter, Nabby (or Abigail) who married a Joseph Hill? Did Gershom Hall have a will of any sort that might name his children? Any help is gratefully appreciated.
Amelia Wilson appears 2x on the 1850 census in Mdrid and Norfolk NY. She ia age 4, born NY. She does not appear with her family in the 1860 census of Weybridge. I thought that she had died, but I found her death record dated 1905 in Brandon VT apparently she was married to someone named Colvin. She claims to have been born in Weybridge, as that was her family's main home, even though she was listed as being born NY before. The family frequently traveled between VT, NY and Canada. I cannot find any evidence of her marriage to Colvin, which may have taken place in NY. Any info? There seems to be several Colvins in the Brandon area, but none seems to have been her husband.

Hello, Jane's headstone is on findagrave.com burried at kensico Cemetery, Valhala in Westchester County. Her headstone states she was born in 27, May 1888 and she died in November 9, 1944. She was already divorced from Martin. She is not on the 1900 census. Only her siblings, she left home before the other siblings at age 13. Mamie/Mary/Almeda was born May 1882, Hattie D born December 1885, and Julia September 1891. Somewhere in the rumors it is said that she was married at age 14/15 years. There is question in regard to the birth date of Hattie D born December 1885 and Harriet Elizabeth born April 8, 1886. They should be the same person. Harriet married Jacques Georges Allen LaDue in Middlebury? I wish someone had access to their death information in the newspapers in Addison County, Vermont. This would help greatly.

I believe it is definitely the same Jane Grey. I have several newspaper articles about her and have been able to piece together part of her life. It is very confusing to do so, however, because she did lie about her age and she had several different names. Jane was born Gladys LaRock in 1882 and married William Tyrrel in 1897. I have a later article that mentions her getting married about age 16. If she was born in 1888, she would have only been 9...I don't think she would have married then! :) Later she assumed the stage name of Gladys Grey, then later Jane Grey. I began researching her life because I am also researching her husband Riccardo Martin. (He lied about his age frequently too!) I think it was a "celebrity image" thing...they wanted to make themselves appear younger than they really were.

Hi,

The 1900 census indicates that Addie was born November 1866. It was a typo on my part, Samuel was born 1866 in Canada.

I think I found the family, emphasis on think, living in Brooklyn, Kings, New York in 1930. Listed as follows:

1. Clara Brooks, Head of Household, Age 42, Widowed and a Special Nurse.

2. Addie Hart, Mother, Age 64, Widowed, No Occupation.

3. Margarette Henderson, Sister, Age 38, Married, No Occupation. Husband not listed. The census takers handwriting is not the best but he/she spelled the first name as I indicated

4. Norma Slocum, Daughter, Age 17, Single and a Clerk.

Every body was born in New York.
Clara must have been married at least twice.

Does this sound like your people?

Thanks for your help. Everything you say agrees with what I had previously. That Clara was born before 1892 and Marguerite before 1900. There was also a William born before 1892 - not sure what happened in that year. Now thinking William born 1886/7 as first child after their marriage on Jan 23, 1886 in Vergennes. Addie was born Port Henry, New York about 1868. Does 1900 have her date of birth? I have that Samuel was born 1866, not 1886. Probably typo as you have his age as 14 in 1880.
Thanks again for your help
Peggy
This one was tough. If I have it correct in 1900 Addie (Stimpson) Hart is living with her parents (William and Margaret)as her husband is dead. They are living in Moriah, Essex, New York. The census also indicates that Addie was born in New York.

For children living with Addie:
1. Clara A, Age 12, Born March 1888 in New York
2. Marguerite, Age 9, Born 1890 in New York

There is no William, however the census does indicate that she had 3 children and 3 are still living.

I can find no death record for Samuel P Hart. The only census record I can find is for 1880 where Samuel is living with his parents William and Jane in Vergennes, Addison, Vermont. He is 14 years old, born about 1886 in Canada.

Hope this helps.

Samuel P. Hart, 1900, wife Ada (Addie) Stimpson

My relative Samuel P. Hart married Addie Stimpson on Jan 23, 1886 in Vergennes, Addison County, Vermont. He was born 1866 and she 1868. By 1900, they should have children William, Clara, and Marguerite. Can anyone find them in 1900 to find ages of children or find dates of birth of children? I don't know if they had more children after 1900.
Thanks for any help
PS. Addie`s sister Mary Ann married Samuel`s brother Henry William but they came back to Canada.
Peggy

My dad's name is Romeo Godard, son of Medor Godard and Elmire Provost. I believe grandpa Medor was a brother of Alcide, as I remember the name coming up when I was trying to do a family tree about 20 years ago. My dad's family was from Chrysler originally, his 2-3 older siblings were born there. Could it be the same family? My dad had only 1 sister (Estelle) and a number of brothers...Aime, Gerald, Romuald, Lorenzo, Maurice, & Medard.
