MISS LODA GARDNER Of Pownal Died Suddenly at the Home of Merritt Barber (ABT 1914)
Pownal, Dec 31. – News was received yesterday of the sudden death of Miss Loda Gardner, an aunt of A. B. Gardner and Winifred Gardner of this place. Miss Gardner has been visiting General and Mrs. Merritt Barber at their home in Troy.
She was as well as usual till Monday morning when she was found unconscious in her bed. She never remained consciousness and died Thursday morning.
Miss Gardner was nearly 70 years of age and had been a resident of Pownal all her life. She had made her home for several years with her nephew, A. B. Gardner. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
The funeral will be held Sunday from the home of A. B. Gardner.
Miss L. S. R. Gardner died at “Rock House” the home of Col Merritt Barber in West Troy, N Y, Thursday morning following a shock of paralysis Monday morning after which she never recovered consciousness. Miss Gardner retired the night before the shock came, in excellent health, after having enjoyed the Christmas feast and gathering at the Col’s. Miss Gardner was born in this town 71 years ago being the youngest child of Captain David and Eunice WRIGHT GARDNER. She was the last of the family to pass away surviving the late Hon Samuel J. Gardner by four years. The greater part of her life was spent in being helpful to others. She remained with her parents caring for them in their declining years after which she came to this village to perform the same office for her aged aunts Misses Ruth and Sarah Wright. After the death of her aunts Miss Gardner resided for a time with her brother, but for the last 11 years has lived with her nephew A B Gardner at Cedar Hill. A devout Christian, she had been for years a member of the Pownal Baptist church. The funeral took place Sunday at her late home, the funeral sermon being preached by Rev F W Klein on the text, “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.”
