Vincent, Maurica, Jennifer, Linda Sue (and anyone else I've missed!),

I am from upstate NY where Martin Dassance's descendants settled in the late 1700's.

Here is what I've been able to surmise through my own lineage:

My mother:
Ethel Jean DASSANCE (Brown); 1932-2006; b. Homer, NY, daughter of...
Stephen DASSANCE; 1912-1973; b. Newfield, NY, son of...
Benjamin DASSANCE; 1874-1955?; b. Newfield, NY; son of...
Joshua DASSANCE; 1842-?; b. Newfield, NY; son of...
Sebastian DASSANCE; 1816-after 1870; b. Newfield, NY; son of...
Abner DASSANCE; 1782-1865; b. Surry, Cheshire, NH; son of...
Martin DASSANCE; 1749-1825; b. Bristol, MA; son of...
Martin DASSANCE; about 1725-??; b. Bayonne, FRANCE

The Elder Martin married Phebe DORMAN - a direct descendent of the Mayflower's John ALDEN & Priscilla MULLINS.

NOW... According to a webpage (findagrave.com) about Holland Wright DAWSON of Shrewsbury, VT (1834-1908), he is also a descendant of the Elder Martin.

The webpage reports... AND THIS IS FASCINATING, IF TRUE!!!:

"IMMIGRANT MARTIN DASSANCE I

The original spelling for this family's surname is DASSANCE and they originate from Bayonne, France. More about the transformation of the surname DASSANCE to DAWSON can be found in the book, 'Shrewsbury, Vermont: Our Town as it Was', by Dawn D. Hance on pages 256-257.

In 1743, at the age of 17, MARTIN DASSANCE I was seized by a British press gang and brought to the house of Ephraim Leonard of Norton, Massachusetts. While at Norton, Martin met and married Phebe Dorman (a Mayflower Descendant), and after the birth of four of his children (Abt. 1756), he removed to Keene, New Hampshire. Also, in 1756, he was a member of Corporal Joseph Hodges' Company in the Expedition against Crown Point (Seven Years War)."

I hope this is helpful to all of you that are interested! And merci`, Vincent, for the information about the DASSANCE family ancestors going so far back in history!

Genuinely,
Rohn Brown
