Pulling at straws here but perhaps you can help me with my Downing brick wall.
I descend from Orville Sprague Downing born 1813 in Vermont. I do not know his parents nor siblings. I noticed quite a few Downings in Orange County in the 1800 and 1810 census for Vermont.
Orville migrated into New York. He called himself a Mohawk Dutchman (?lived Mohawk Valley of NY or genealogy of Mohawk Indian and Dutch). His father came to US from Ireland but descended from George Downing of which Downing St. is named for.
Orville married Phoebe Montgomery daughter of Hugh and Racheal Row/Rose/Rowe Montgomery in the town of Brownville Jefferson Co. NY. They lived in the towns of Lyme where their first three children Orville Sprague born 1839; Amanda born 1840; Thomas Jefferson born 1842. The next child and remaining 8 including my line was born here in town of Gouverneur, St. Lawrence Co. NY.
This Downing line is known for their red hair.
I noted the surname Richardson in your message. That is a common surname to the same era here in St. Lawrence Co.
Other surnames: Congdon, Crawford, Smith, White, Nichols, Gallagher, Washburn, Harmer, Wilson, Webb, Whalen, etc.
Any links?
