Benjamin, Minot, Ansel Farmer

I'm looking for information on the marriage, children, and death of Minot Farmer b. 1779 and living in Rutland VT around 1800-1810. Minot was apparently the first Constable of that town and was the son of Benjamin Farmer who died there about 1806. Benjamin was son of Benjamin Farmer Sr. of MA who married Rebecca Minot. I am particularly trying to connect Ansel D. Farmer known to be born in VT in 1810-1812 with Minot Farmer of Rutland who I think is likely Minot's father. The connection is very probable given that one of Ansel's sons was given the middle name Minot.

Any records or facts pertaining to the Farmer family in Rutland would be welcomed. Cemetary, marriage, and birth records are particularly sought. Middle names are also of great interest since they have proven the most useful way to trace this rather common Surname. My line eventually left VT for PA, Ontario, and MI.

Regards,
J. Farmer
Ithaca, NY

Apparently Anita was called "Pat" and Richard americanized his name to Case or Cose or Coxe.

Anita died shortly after their marriage (1936-1937?) and Richard got re-married. I do not know where and when. Again the old pictures say the name of his second wife was "Jerry" or "Jenny".

Any info or trace would be appreciated.

Thanks, Borys

Officers, Rutland Branch, National Land League, 1880

December 29, 1880
Rutland Daily Herald and Globe
Local Notes

Pursuant to the call, the Irishmen of Rutland met in good numbers at the village hall last evening for the purpose of forming a branch of the National Land League, the constitution of which was read. A permanent organization was effected by the choice of the following officers:

President:
J. D. Hanrahan

Vice presidents:
J. P. Crowley,
D. Kingsley,
J. O’Dwyer

Treasurer:
P. Cain

Financial secretary:
E. C. Carrigan

Recording secretary:
J. P. Collins

Executive committee:
J. McGuirk
M. Kingley
D. McNamra
J. Caden
J. Flanagan
John Haley Sr.
J. P. Ryan

It is proposed to have a meeting soon, when speakers will be in attendance and present the claims of the organization.

[My note - Charles Stewart Parnell, the leader of the Irish Nationalist movement in 1880 and referred to as the “Uncrowned King of Ireland”, was the president of the Irish National Land League. He got a lot of financial support from the Irish in America. The Land League’s main objective was to provide Irish tenant farmers with fair rent and fixed tenure. Ultimately the goal was for farmers to own their land. When members of the Land League in Ireland practiced shunning and social isolation of a County Mayo land agent named Captain Boycott, the term “boycott” came into being.]

Accident in Swedish household - Scrivanion? Scgrana?
February 9, 1880.
Rutland Daily Herald and Globe.
Local Notes.
Saturday a child of Louis Scrivanion of West street fell into a tub of boiling water and was badly scalded. Hopes however are entertained for her recovery. She was attended by Dr. Griswold.

[The 1880 census has a Louis Scgrana, 28, of Sweden on West street with his wife Felia, 21, born in Sweden, and 3-year-old daughter Lizzie, born in Vermont. He was a fruit peddler. I haven't been able to locate the family in any other census in any part of the country, so it seems possible that the name in other censuses might have been something more like Sjogren, Snogren, Sjgren, Sjgreen, Shogren, Sgrena, or Sjgrummon. Perhaps someone searching Swedish ancestry will see a connection.]
I am interested in information about Mary F. Hancock, born May 21, 1780, in Pawlet, Vermont, Rutland County. She died August 19, 1872, we're not sure where.

My family believes Mary F. Hancock is somehow related to John F. Hancock, Declaration of Independence signer. We would love to establish a connection -- i.e., is she a grandaughter, niece, etc.

Also, Mary married Jamles Bagley, born May 21, 1780, Pawlet, Vermont. He died August 19, 1872. We're not sure where. One of their children was Esther P. Bagley, born July 30, 1823 in Pawlet. She married Lewis Cline, born January 10, 1823, in Fairfax, Vermont. The couple left the state at the center of a scandal involving adultery and divorce (we think) when they were in their 20s.

Can anyone help me make a connection to John F. Hancock and find out more about the scandal? I believe the scandad occured in St. Albans Bay, Vermont, where I will also post a note. Thanks. Vermont is a beautiful state.

They lived in Brandon for many years and eventually moved to Iowa. Both Edward and Mary were born in Canada. I need to find out who their parents were.

My Friends,

I have indexed approximately 2100 naturalization records which were finalized in Rutland county, Vermont. If you have relatives who came from another country and lived in the Rutland county vicinity, including surrounding counties, even for a short time, I invite you to review the index located at this site:

http://www.angelfire.com/vt2/mumford/naturalizations.html

There is a note with explanations that should also prove helpful.

Cathy Habes was very generous to share her time, effort and web space to make this available to you and I thank her with all my heart. I hope and pray you will find one of your family members in here.

If you would like a copy of a record for your own review do not hesitate to drop me a note here and I will be happy to oblige at my earliest convenience. Before making your request, please read the section there on the site about making requests for copies.

Happy hunting!
Sara Noonan

Surnames in

Do old Catholic records in Wallingford exist? I need data from the 1840s-1860s. How could I access the information in them? Who would I contact? Primary surnames are French-Canadian LACHAMBRE/SHUM, LABOSSIÈRE, PENOR/PINARD and others.
Thanks for all assistance -- it is appreciated.
Merrily in Iowa
lilliemay@mchsi.com

W. Rutland - family album

I have a wonderful photo album which was found in a house being emptied for demolition near Chicago. Most of the photos & tintypes are labeled, indicating those pictured were mostly from West Rutland. It may have belonged to a
G.S.Carrigan. Will return to a descendent of G.S.C. upon proof of connection. If no family can be found, I will give it to a genealogical society.
Any help in locating the rightful owner(s) would be appreciated.

Looking for anyone with the knowledge of the
following individuals with numbers of 1 and 2
generations.
William and Amelia can be found in the 1880
Castleton census; and 1900 census has them in
Rutland City.

Several newspaper clippings in the 1924ish
time period verify that Dora M (Mrs Hiram)
Potter, who was then residing in the Lee
District of Granville, Washington Co, NY
had siblings named Leon and Maude Russell.
In the 1924 clipping, Leon Russell had
deceased in Chittenden, VT. Am assuming that
the clipping really referred to Chittenden Co.
However, I did not find Leon listed in any of
that county's cemeteries.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Descendants of William Russell

1 William Russell	1852 -
.. +Amelia Unknown	1852 -
........	2 Dora M Russell	1872 -
............ +Hiram Potter	1854 -
...........	3 Ida B Potter	1891 -
...........	3 Henry H Potter	1893 -
...........	3 James Potter	1895 -
........... +Grace Stoddard
...........	3 Ada V Potter	1895 -
.................	+Charles D Potter
...........	3 Russell Potter	1897 -
............	+Leta Blanchard	1901 -
...........	4 Vernon Russell Potter	1919 -
...........	4 Vernette Potter	1923 -
................	+Floyd Chapin
..........	4 Victor J Potter	1924 - 1996
...........	3 Clayton Potter	1900 -
...........	3 Dorothy Potter	1904 -
................ +Clark Barber Juckett
.........	3 Leon Potter	1907 -
........	2 Lovina Russell	1876 -
........	2 Leon Russell	1884 - 1924
........	2 Maude Russell	1886 -
........	2 Amelia Russell	1889 -
Richard HASKINS VT>Canada>NY/VT??? 1800s

I am looking for information on Richard HASKINS born in VT and Camelia WHITEHEAD born in Canada.

I assume they were married around 1840 and lived in Canada for at least a little while because their son Hiram Clark HASKINS was born in Canada in 1843.

Hiram had at least 2 younger siblings: Charles and Jason. All three brothers show up later in Saranac, Clinton County, NY and then later in Duane, Franklin County, NY.

I know there were some Richard HASKINS families in Rutland County, VT in the 1800's so I am posting this message here even though I am not sure that my Richard HASKINS is from Rutland County.

I would guess that Richard was born about 1810-1820 in VT.

I'd appreciate any help you could provide. Thank you.

Jay

Soldiers remain in the south, 1866

On April 5, 1866, the Rutland Herald carried a notice about the return of members of the 7th Regiment Vermont Volunteers to Vermont.

The 7th Regiment Vermont Volunteers had fought the Civil War in the far south, campaigning in Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida and Alabama. When the war ended, they were not discharged but sent to serve out the remainder of their enlistment in Texas at the mouth of the Rio Grande River.

They were mustered out at Brownsville, Texas on March 14, 1866 and proceeded to Brattleboro to be formally disbanded on April 6, 1866.

What I found interesting was a report in the Rutland Herald on April 5, 1866 that our of the 355 men mustered out in Texas, only about 170 came back to Vermont, the rest "preferring to settle in the south."

Hi, Seeking how Edward OWEN or OWENS and his wife Jane listed in the Poultney, Rutland Co., VT 1880 census are related to my great grand aunt and uncle, Elizabeth JONES OWEN and Morris OWEN MORRIS, born in North Wales.

Edward + Jane OWEN may have come from Wales to the US after 1870. Children were Thomas OWENS age 16; Jane OWENS age 14; Margaret OWENS age 11 - all born Wales, then Richard OWENS age 9 b Vermont and Catherine OWENS age 7 b New York. Edward OWENS' occupation: works in slate quarry.

Sharrie could not find Jane in the 1900 census and it is a possibility she remarried after his death. She tried to find the sons and there several viable options for each of them and none of them were in Vermont or New York.
===============
Buried in Poultney Cemetery, Poultney, VT: Morris OWEN 1832-1876
Elizabeth JONES, wife, 1832-1918
Margaret OWEN 1874-1964
Susan OWEN WATTS 1868-1953
Robert A. WATTS 1863-1941
Edward T. OWENS 1835-1885
Jane E., wife, 1838-1926.

Thank in advance,
Jan <jnrose@webtv.net>

Richard Brown 1792 VT - 1860 CA

I believe that this Richard is my 2nd great grandfather and want to prove/disprove the assumption.

The 1860 Anderson, Mendocino, CA census lists a Richard Brown b. 1792 VT living with Margaret Brown, b. 1794 NY and the Albert BRAYTON family. The Braytons and the Browns had a long standing connection. The Braytons lived in the Fort Ann, NY area during the 1700 - 1800's. With Rutland being close by, I am hoping to find information at this board.

The 1870 San Jose, Santa Clara, CA census lists a Margaret Brown (same natal) living with Roger Brown and his family (Ellen, Warren, Ernest, Susan). I also found a Richard and Margaret Brown in the 1850 Burlington, Racine, WI census whose natal is the same.

We've been able to document only 8 years of our Richard (1840-1848). 1st son, Loammi Bryon b. 1840 IA; married Rebecca Moore, 1844, IL; 2nd son, Benjamin Franklin b. 1844, IL; daughter, Susan b. 1846 and 3rd son, Richard Gibson b. 1848.

Hope someone has info on this Brown family! Thanks!

The heavy head-block got the best of the workmen by some means or other and came down on his foot. He was carried home and made as comfortable as possible.
May 22, 1880.
Rutland Daily Herald and Globe.
Killed by the Cars.
At Poultney yesterday afternoon, as Conductor Charles W. Potter’s train, which arrives here at 4:30, was doing some switching, Daniel Crowley, a section hand, aged about 60, and father of the section boss, in some inexplicable way got in front of a couple of cars which were being shoved onto the siding and was run over. One of his legs was broken in two places and he was otherwise injured about the body. Death resulted a few hours after the accident.

[Note - The section boss, Daniel’s son, was probably Timothy Crowley of Poultney. He is listed as a section boss in the 1880 census of Poultney and in the 1870 census shared a dwelling with an elderly Daniel Crowley and family.]

April 20, 1880.
Rutland Daily Herald and Globe.
West Rutland.

Several young men left here last week for New Jersey, where they have found employment at much better wages than are being paid here.

Mrs. P. Colligan died quite suddenly on the 10th inst., it is supposed of heart disease. Mrs. C. retired at 10 o’clock and shortly after complained of feeling unwell. Her husband succeeded in getting her into an easy chair, when the other members of the family, a son and daughter, were called, but too late to receive any parting word or look of recognition from a loved mother. She died five minutes after the first alarm. Though the deceased was not in robust health, her family were not prepared for so sudden and appalling a visitation. They have the sympathy of all in their sad bereavement. The funeral was largely attended from St. Bridget’s church Tuesday morning.

1860 Brandon Census; Lewis and Elizabeth Robinson

I've found a record of Lewis Robinson, age 28 birthplace Canada, his wife Elizabeth, age 20 birthplace VT and young daughter Josephine, age 8 months birthplace MA in the 1860 Brandon, VT census..this information matches fairly closely to my great great great grandparents, Louis Robinson and his wife Elizabeth(or Mary)Gosselin Robinson.
My records have the daughter as Mary Josephine Robinson who was supposedly born in Hopedale, MA sometime between 1857-1862.

I'd like to learn more about this family but I don't know what resources might be available for the Brandon area at that time.

Records here in Mass. agree that Louis was born in Canada and ELizabeth was born most likely in VT but could have been born in Canada as well. Some records also agree that Mary Josephine was born in MA but I've not found a record to support that. Her death and marriage records say that she was born in MA but there's no real proof.

I don't know whether Lewis and Elizabeth and Josephine are my kin or not but if they are it's an earlier starting point for them than I've had previously. Any advice regarding resources for Brandon in the time frame of 1855-1870 would be most appreciated.

Ed O'Connor
Hudson,MA

McCANN injury, 1880

May 20, 1880.
Rutland Daily Herald and Globe.
State News.
At Fairhaven, Peter McCanna (sic), 15 years old, has had his arm broken in two places by having it caught in the belt of a machine in the slate mill and would have been killed if he had not had the presence of mind enough to throw off the belt and stop the machine.

[My note - This seems to be Peter McCann, son of Edward McCann. Peter is listed as living in Fair Haven in the 1880 census, age 13, working in a slate mill.]
