My ggg grandfather, James Lambert, stated in his Rev. War Pension Declaration that he gave his discharge papers in 1781 to a William Bennett who drowned about one year later. The Register of Virginians in the Revolution lists a William Bennett from Accomac County who was a Sailing Master in the Virginia Navy. According to the Declaration submitted by his heirs, he left the service May 19, 1781, and he died April 22, 1783.
Can anyone tell me how this William Bennett died? If he died by drowning, it would confirm my ggg grandfather's statement as well as identify the William Bennett who had possession of my ggg grandfather's discharge papers.
Any assistance will be appreciated greatly.
George Lambert
