It has been passed down through the family that somehow, way back when, our ancestor owned land that later became associated with Monticello, placing the family somewhere in the Albemarle vicinity sometime). Also passed down (and of course that no one can remember how!) was that our ancestor, Phillip, had brothers named John, Larkin and Thomas. Our records, through family biographies and tombstones, that our Philip Smith was born in Montgomery County, North Carolina in either 1780 or 1790 and married Nancy Cooper there, had seven children before moving to Sangamon County, Illinois where they had five more children.
With such a common name as Smith, I've hit a roadblock until running across this thread bearing the same names as our family lore. Would anyeone be able to provide me with any information to show if this is just a fluke of names (I know Phillip, John, & Thomas are VERY common, but Larkin stands out a bit more) or if there might be a connection?
Any help would be appreciated.
