I have an ancestor (William Stewardson) who shows up in an early census as living in New York, Albemarle County, Virginia. I'm unfamiliar with the area and am curious ... where, exactly, was New York, Virginia, and what happened to it? I assume it was absorbed into a larger town - Charlottesville, perhaps? This ancestor eventually settled in Nelson County, in Rockfish. Any information would be welcome. Thanks!
