I sent you a message on here. You would by my Mother-in-law's first cousin. We heard the same story you did then about Frank. Ralph Edward (Ed) Simms is my wife's grandpa. He told his family he was raised in an orphanage, though I have found him and your father and their family living together in 1940. I'm curious if your Father ended up in the same place, or said anything about what happened to their parents and/or family.

Rose, I don't know if you're still looking for Dessie, but I finally found her tonight. I couldn't find her using the names you gave me, but did remember a lady from my church whose name was Dorothy Whitlock Dunlap, so I did an ancestry.com search for her. Eureaka! She was the daughter of Ada Lutz and Jere Fendol Whitlock! When I researched Ada, I found her sister, Dessie, who died in Clifton Forge on 28Jan1905, at the age of 20.

While I couldn't find her burial place, I do know that Dorothy Whitlock Dunlap is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, so would guess that Dessie is buried there, also.

All of your family members are found in the Stephanie Doroghazi Powell-Moulds Family Tree on ancestry.com There are family photos, including 2 of Dessie and one of her chld.

So sorry I couldn't find this before your trip, but just wanted you to know I hadn't forgotten about you. I still don't know what made me think of Dot Dunlap, because she was much older than I was, and I only knew her by her married name; however, I finally remembered that she had a brother who was a house painter, and who's last name was Whitlock. In fact, he used to live across the street from me when I was a little girl, and Dot and I went to the same Presbyterian Church, where she played piano and organ.

Please let me know if you find the family tree Dessie's in. If not, I'll scan the info and send it to you in an email. Hope this helps with your family research.

Sincerely,

Donna Craft

We were told my my father (now deceased), George Ernest Simms, that his youngest brother, Frank, was struck by a car while riding his bicycle and he passed at that time. We never met any of my father's family so this is just information that he verbally passed on to us.

Hello Robert,

I am the great grandson of Harry Kumm. His son, Donald, was killed in the 2nd World War in Belgium. Donald's son, my father, is still living and we are willing to help fill some of the gaps in your genealogy. Unfortunately, both of Harry's sons were killed in the war, and with Beulah gone it may be difficult to answer too many questions. However, I do have Harry's diary of his travels back to Germany after the war, but unfortunately most of the family records were destroyed in the course of the war. Additionally, the loss of my grandfather, Donald, in the war made some family relations a little strained. So we may not have as much information as either of us would like. We do have a short history of Niles Valley in which Frau Kumm is mentioned. So I would love to learn about the family history from your side and share what little I know on my side. I hope this finds you well. Best. Brian

James was born Feb.22,1825 in County Cork, Irland. He died April 4, 1892 in Alleghany County, Va. His wife, Elizabeth E. Franklin was born July 15, 1843. She died Jan. 9, 1914. They had 11 children. You are correct that they are buried at Mt. Carmel cemetery. I have much more family geneology if you are intrested.

I'm looking for information. There is a very close dna match between a Porter and Humphries (from Rich Patch). There is a Porter Mountain and I have seen a reference to a land transfer to a Porter in the area. Hoping to find a connection to a Porter family being in the area. Figuring there was an adoption or out of wedlock situation. I figure if there is a mountain named after them they must have been early settlers too.

Hi,
Thank you for your offer to help.
Her name was Dessie Violet Lutz Hanger. I've also seen it spelled Deccie. Her husband was John Hanger they lived in Greenbrier Co. When she got sick John took her to her sister in Clifton Forge for care. I had the death year wrong - it was Saturday 29 Jan 1905. She was 21 years old.
I did find a newpaper announcement of her death in the Lewisburg paper.
It says she died at the home of her sister Mrs. Ada Whitlock in Clifton Forge. The announcement also said that the funeral was in Clifton Forge on Monday and that she was a Methodist. But it didn't say what cemetery; family oral tradition says she was buried at Crown Hill.
In the census records I have found the sister and her husband Jerry Whitlock living in Clifton Forge.
I appreciate any help you can offer. I hope to be in Greenbrier Co around Labor Day and thought I might be able to find her grave. I live in Arkansas.
Rose

I'm looking for marriage and birth records from my ancestors. My 4th great grandfather's name was Daniel McGregor from Scotland. His wife, my 4th great-grandmother, was named Emma or Emily or Emaline. They had several children in Clifton Forge, Va. I can't find a marriage certificate or birth certificates for any of them. The child I'm especially looking for is Henry Clay McGregor (later changed his last name to Stephenson), born in 1831.
If these records can't be found online, who would I contact to get them? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I have a relative born in 1933 who is in Clifton Forge in the 1940 census with his family who appears to drop off of the charts afterward. Family lore has a member of this family dying in a bicycle accident as a child. The remaining members that I know of are accounted for, so I assume Frank D. Simms may have been the one killed.

If anyone has any information on that, or may have lived in the area at the time, I would appreciate it. We, as a family, have a lot of questions that this Frank might be able to address if he might still be alive.

Again, the info I have is Name: Frank D. Simms, (Listed as Simmons by Census digitizers), son of George Earl Simms (again, simmons if one searches) and Ruby Ada (Jackson) Simms (Simons)

I used to go to their old location when I was in the area and had the time, but I haven't been to the new location.I am from the old Alleghany Station area, and most of my ancesters are from Alleghany, Monroe, Greenbrier counties.Do you happen to know if there is any map indicating the area of Alleghany Co. that came from Monroe Co. or Greenbrier Co. when it was formed in 1822. Thanks. Leon

Hi,
I don't know if you are aware of the Alleghany Highlands Genealogical Society that is located at 515 East Pine Street in Covington, VA. The Society is a grassroots organization that has a library and maintains records of families in the Alleghany County, VA area. They can probably help with your search. They also have a site on Rootsweb. It is: http://www.Rootsweb.com/~vaallegh/
You may want to check them out. There is probably a member of the society that is reseraching the family and can help you. Donna

I have information on Hunter School. My nephew built a house where the school set, and many, many years ago our school bus would drop off some of the kids at the school in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon. I think it closed about 1964. It was small, and only took certain kids and only up to 5th grade if I remember correctly. There was a Hunter family in the area, perhaps the name. The area was called Sweet Chalybeate.

Hi Dottie. Sorry it took me so long to get your message, I just have not been on this site.I have a very recent picture here somewhere of what there is on the site today. Someone built a house where the old inn stood, and the only thing left from the old place is a small building. My friend and classmate Jimmy Ruble's grandmother use to live in the house section of the inn while it was still standing, and I remember touring the Inn as a 4th grader (about1957-8). The area has a rich history, due to being a good route west and the local resorts built around springs. You might want to Google info on Sweet Chalybeate, Va. and Sweet Springs, WV(Monroe Co.). They are just west of Crows, and your families were living there. I will find my pictures and send them. Leon

Need DNA testee from descendant of Jacob "Godfrey" Persinger

The Persinger DNA project now has donations to pay at least half of the cost for "Y" chromosome testing of a descendant from Jacob Godfrey Persinger. Hoping to have some contributors for the rest of the cost and most importantly a Persinger man who has solid confirmation of his lineage back to Jacob Persinger, the man we call Godfrey due to the story he thought that was his surname when he was captured by Indians and later returned but adopted by the Persinger family. I'd like to also point out for all Persinger historical researchers that within 6 weeks we should have 67 marker test results on Peter Bertschinger, from near Zurich, Switzerland. - Allan Griffith, Bloomington, Illinois - magriffy@comcast.net

I am looking for information on Arthur Shell and his wife Mary. Arthur may have lived or worked, as a doctor, in either Alleghany or Rockbridge County. Dr. Shell was, according to my grandmother's records, the doctor who delivered her in 1918. If there is anyone in the Alleghnay or Rockbridge County area who knows anything about a Dr. Arthur Shell, I would be thankful for any information you could share with me about him and his family.

Thanks so much,

vlgsticks24

You're welcome.
Thank you so much for your reply. It is very helpful.

The two "relatives" (distant cousins) that I am most interested in were listed as working for the railroad in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census'. George Meadows was listed as a conductor and Everette Preston Meadows was listed as an engineer. George was 49 in 1920 and Everette Preston was 47 in 1930, probably too old (?) to have known your brother-in-law.

Thanks again!
Arley Meadows
ameadows@zoominternet.net

I am related to the Durvin family in Clifton Forge. The younger James Alexander Durvin is the son of the late Benjamin Hughes Durvin and Sarah Elmore Durvin, and the grandson of Laura Lee Craft Elmore (my great aunt) and Ott (Ottie) Jackson Elmore. Laura and Ottie were originally from Craig Co, Va. I have not been able to find Benjamin's parents or siblings, but would imagine James Alexander was named for someone in his family. Other children of Benjamin and Sarah are Betty (deceased) and a living son and living daughter. I can be reached at dgibby@aol.com.

It was probably the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O), now known as CSX. Do you know when your relatives lived in Alleghany Co? There was another RR that preceded the C&O, but I feel certain it was the C&O. If you're interested, I can give you more info.

I live in Clifton Forge (in Alleghany Co), and the C&O had a very large operation here for years. There was also a hospital and nursing school, roundhouse, shops where engines, etc., were worked on. In addition, the Greenbriar Hotel in White Sulpher Springs,WVA, was owned by the C&O.

The C&O Historical Association and C&O Hertiage Foundation are both located here in CF and have lots of info about the RR. The Heritage Foundation also has a page on Face Book.

Let me know if you need any more info. My brother-in-law worked for the RR, and retired as an engineer for Amtrack. He most likely knew some of your family.

I can be reached at dgibby@aol.com

Donna Craft

Thank you, I had found this information since I first posted this message but forgot to make an update. I made a trip to Falling Springs and found all the headstones as well... Including 5 or so that were buried under overgrown grass and trees at the edge of the hillside.
