Surnames: CARTER
Looking at the Will of Chas. Carter in Amherst Co.,Va; probated 01 Dec. 1766... there were two slaves mentioned: Rachell and Sary. Both were indexed as CARTER and listed under the heading: Slaves/Freed Slaves.

Perhaps a clue there, I hope.
