Took a look at the records at the Amherst Museum & Historical Society, but couldn't come up with anything about the murder. The only thing we found was a memorial in the paper on 8/30/1935 for G S Tyree who died on 8/28/1932. Unfortunately the museum does not have copies of the newspapers from 1932 to look up the actual murder. You might want to try contacting the Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg, VA, they may be able to help you.

Midge

I'm seeking information on the murder of G. Sidney Tyree in Amherst. I have an excerpt from the Lynchburg News dated Feb. 14, 1933 that reads:

"On account of the illness of Dr. R.B. Ware, who is recuperating from an operation at the University Hospital in Charlottesville, and for other reasons, the case of William Ellis Lamb, charged with the murder of G. Sidney Tyree, at Amherst, in August Last, was continued until March 13".

G. Sidney Tyree was my third great grand uncle and brother to my third great grandfather, Sidney Baxter Tyree.

I live in San Jose, CA and have never lived outside California.

I did a descendancy study on the descendants of James Edmunds and Sarah Lavender which I completed several years ago. The results are in my family tree online that can be viewed at:

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...

My study was based on a variety of sources, most of which were sources I found on the internet. Except for my direct line, I never intended to try and make the study more complete that I was able to find during my study.

I have a specific birth date for James Edmunds, Jr., of April 12, 1774, but I do not have an exact date of death (although I have September 1834 in my database, but cannot tell you the source from which I obtained or deduced the year of death) and I have no exact dates for Jean Innis. Therefore, I conclude that I never found their tombstones.

They had a son James J. Edmunds, born October 19, 1805, died approximately 1845-1848 (no in 1850 census). Here are my notes on him:

____
He is probably the tally mark, age 10-15 in his father's household in the 1820 census for Warren Co., KY with the entire household listed as 010101-00001.

He is listed as John J. Edmunds, head of household, in the 1830 census for Warren Co., KY, age 20-29, with the whose household listed as 0000100-00001.

He is listed as Jno. J. Edmunds, head of household, in the 1840 census for Warren Co., KY, age 30-39, with the whole household listed as 10100100-110000100.

I cannot find him in the 1850 census.

From the book "Early Tennessee Settlers, 1700s-1900s, Henry County "Old Time Stuff", Estates, Guardians, Orders, etc, Page 50

At the October 9, 1856 court a petition to divide the estate, Samuel C Edmunds, Sarah A. Edmunds, and Mary A Edmunds, minors by next friend, heirs of John J Edmunds deceased. There was 441 acres of land to be divided. Sarah A Edmunds was the relict or widow and the others were the children of the deceased. (C.C. Min. 1849-59 p.386)

_______

John J. Edmunds married Sarah A. Martin (not sure about her maiden name). I am not sure whether the Sarah A. Edmunds in the 1856 record above is the widow or one of the minor children. One child, Samuel C. Edmunds, was born December 23, 1831, in Warren Co., KY and married Drucilla Hardy and the daughter Mary A. Edmunds, born November 10, 1842, in Warren Co., KY married John William Buchanan on April 11, 1861 in Henry Co., TN. Based on the 1840 census, there seems to be two minor females who do not appear with their mother in the 1850 census. I don't know anything more about these two additional females (daughters?).

Sarah A. Edmunds, wife of John J. Edmunds, appears as head of household in the 1850 Henry Co., TN, census.

Please refer to my online family tree and the notes included with this tree before sending me further queries to help you with your problem areas in your Edmunds descendancy study.

Bob Allen

Bob, this is Elaine Sledge replying to you on my mother's site. (I was unable to login under my name, for some reason.) I accidently ran across your 2007 post. I haven't done anything with the Edmunds line in a while, until just recently.

James Edmunds d. 1 Sept. 1834. [Entry in Edmunds Family Bible] His tombstone is broken in several pieces, and the part with the year is gone. BUT, the Bible gives it as 1834, and his will was presented to the Sept. 1834 Warren Co. Court for probate.

Jane Edmunds d. 30 Sept. 1846. [Entry in Bible] Her tombstone was illegible. Her will was presented to the Oct. 1846 Warren Co. Court for probate.

Their son, John James Edmunds, m. Sarah (Martin) Davis, 18 Dec. 1826. [Warren Co., KY Marriage Bonds] This was a 2nd marriage for Sarah. He died 28 Sept. 1848 in Henry Co., TN [Family Bible] You might try looking for Sarah in the 1850 Henry Co., TN census. No info on the children. Don't know if they were hers & John's or hers & 1st husband James Davis.

I accidently ran across your post, 6 years later. Haven't done a lot of research on the Edmunds in that time.

John Edmunds & Mary Watkins (?) are a "brick wall."
All I know - for sure - is that John's will was probated in June 1784 in Amherst Co., VA (WB 2, p. 181). He mentions wife Mary, children: James Edmunds, Samuel Edmunds, Elizabeth Balew, Sarah Woodrough. Moses Campbell & Ambrose Campbell were named executors.
Does anyone out there have any information about Delilah Beverly? She was born abt 1812. There was another one born about 1840 something. I’m not really looking for that one.

I think that Delilah could be the sister of Washington (1821), Bailey(1815) and Polly Beverly (1805) and the aunt of Aldridge (1823) and Lucy Beverly (1833). She’s probably daughter of Samuel and Rhoda Beverly. Not sure of the last though. Well shoot, I’m guessing about the whole thing. Not much info out there of Delilah, Baily or Polly Beverly. They were all on the census together at one time or another.

Any help would be great.
Thanks in advance
Shawn
I have a James Tomlinson from Amherst, VA in my line. Most of them were James, John or William. They go back to 1740 or so. My great grandfather, William Tomlinson, changed to Tomlin sometime around 1900. His own children did not know that their lineage was Tomlinson. My grandmother, Ora Frances Martin, is said to have been of Monacan descent. Her records have proven to be much harder to find. That actually suggests to me that she is Monacan. Anyway, Grissom is a name that pops up as a middle name in a few places.

I checked the Amherst Courthouse and could not find a marriage record for Elizabeth Watts and George Burnett. You may want to check in Lynchburg, which is an independent city and not part of any county. A good source there is the Jones Memorial Library which is a genealogy library.

I am searching for any info on my husband's grandfather, Percy Harrison Wright, born in Amherst County in 1897. Sometime before 1920 he started calling himself Jack. He gave his mothers's name as Virginia on his WWII draft card and his father's name as George on his marriage license. Family legend is that his parents were not married, and he was given to another couple to raise. They may have been Wrights, or either of his parents could have been a Wright. He supposedly ran away from his foster family, and another family legend is that they were Dooleys. One of his sons recalls that Jack/Percy married a woman and had a daughter prior to marrying Emma Pearl Bilbro from Bedford County. I know this is a long shot but I am hoping these names or situations may be part of someone else's lineage as well.

Sherry,

This may be of only marginal help to you, but the World War I Draft Registration Card for Percy listed his mother Virginia as then living in Tyro, Virginia, which is on Highway 56 near Massies Mill, Nelson County, Virginia.

And the 1920 Census for Massie's Mill, Nelson County, VA, listed Percy Wright, age 22 and born in VA, as a boarder in the May Anderson household and that he was divorced, which is consistent with the family story.

So you might want to search the Nelson County, VA, marriage records for the period 1912 to 1920 to see if there is a marriage record there for Percy's first marriage.

I checked the 1900 Census for both Nelson and Amherst Counties and did not find anyone who would fit your Percy Harrison Wright.

Robert N.
i am seeking information on a sarah ann elizabeth watts of lynchburg / amherst co., born 1828-32, died 1890 in norfolk, virginia.

she was married to george w. burnett (born 1830? in virginia, amherst co. most likely), with children: jesse burnett (went on to live in terre haute, indiana, according to family letters), samuel burnett (no information on him), william w burnett (b. suffolk, va 1866, d. boston, ma 1919, m. maggie d. elliott 1890 & rachel gladys meek in 1909), charles a burnett (b. 1853 amherst co, d. 1925 in norfolk, m. hattie smith matthews), and mary elizabeth burnett (who is my relative, b. 1860 in amherst, d. 1925 in norfolk, m. edward p anderson).

according to old family her father was a methodist minister and she grew up around lynchburg, although george burnett died soon and the children spent much of their time elsewhere (written that charles a. burnett lived with sarah watts friends, the norfleets in suffolk, va). records list either a "b.a. watts" or "jacob watts" as her father but i can find no record of either, besides a methodist minister jacob watts who died before she was born and resided in albemarle, and an active methodist watts in lynchburg, col. james winston watts, who is her age so cannot be her father.

if you have any information i would greatly appreciate it.

I know of two Wyatt Tuckers in Amherst County, VA, both descendants of Charles Tucker and Mary Tompkins. The elder Wyatt, their son, was born about 1790; the younger was his nephew, son of William and Harriet Hix Tucker and born about 1820. Of these facts, I'm sure.

Did you find proof of another Wyatt being a son of Daniel?? In what county? Listed in a will??

Sorry to keep pushing this...

Daniel Tucker and wife Judith Harris live in the area where William first shows up, but there is a reasonable amount of information about them but I can't find a son by them named William. I find Wyatt, St. George, Mary and Daniel as children. The childre are born about the same time as William. But I can find nothing to tie our William to him other than the similarity of dates and area.

This Lucy Beverly line is really driving me nuts.

There is something screwy going on. There has to be two very close Lucy Beverly lines running neck to neck. First of all in the in the 1870 census Lucy's age is wrong. Now I can understand a few years difference (+/- 5 so years), but this census says Lucy was born abt. 1849 - a full 14 years difference! Also it is said that Lafayette changed his name to Tyree and they lived happily ever after by that name away from Amherst. I'm not even going to get into the fact that the census says they are white and all the other years they made sure mulatto was put down (even for the children and the children's children).

Well my Lucy Beverly born abt. 1835 was in Amherst all her life and didn't seem to have changed her name. Actually she was a widow probably around 1860-1870. I can't find the name of a spouse but the 1880 census have her living with her brother Henry Beverley and wife Georganna and in 1900 and 1910 she was living with her daughter Martha A Beverly. There is another big problem with the pairing of Lafayette. Lucy Beverly/Tyree/Terry wife of Lafayette Beverly/Tyree never had a son Anthony R Beverly (b. 1852) who married Mary A Pinn.

Now what's really confusing is that in 1860 Lucy Beverly was living with Lafayette's sister Delilah Beverly (Lafayette was not on the list of people). Now I'm guessing, but I think that Alairage Beverly (that's how its spelled on the census) might have been her husband. I don't know. My mind is totally mixed up right about time I get to this part.

UHG... Can someone shine a light my way to help me see through this confusion.

Shawn

Beverly help please

Ok I am completely stumped.

I am trying to trace back a part of the Beverly family. This is what I have so far:

Anthony R Beverly (b. 1852) married Mary A Beverly (b. 1854)

(Ill start with the really hard line first)

Lucy Beverly (b. 1835) is Anthony's mother. I cannot find the father at all. But Lucy have lived with her sibling for a while. (siblings: Aldrige (b. 1830), Eliza (b. 1835), Henry L (b. 1846), Herann (b. 1852))

In 1860 she lived with a whole bunch of people including Bailey Beverly and Delilah Beverly.

In 1870 Lucy stayed with LaFayette Beverly but I'm not sure if she was his wife and if she was, did they separate? It also says that she was white.

When 1880 comes around, Lucy is living with her brother (I think) Henry Beverly and his wife Georganna. She is also labeled as Mulatto here. Is this the same person?

In 1890, Lucy is living with her daughter Martha Beverly along with Rosana.

In 1910, Lucy is living with Peter Beverly and Martha Beverly (her children?).

I also have that Polly Beverly is Lucy's mother (b. 1805). Not sure if that's right. She could be an aunt but I'm not sure.

I am SOOOOO confused.

Ok so now for Mary

I have John Turner Pinn (b. 1826) and Martha J Pinn (Beverly) (b. 1821) as her father and mother. Now John's mother is easy enough. I found that his mom was Polly Beverly (Pinn) (b. 1805), though for the life of me I have no idea how she got Beverly from her husband's last name of Tuppence.

Martha's mother's line is not as smooth. This is what I have (which I think is wrong):

Martha's mom was Judy S Beverly (b. 1780) and her father William Beverly (b. 1800)????? And which William Beverly is it? Who was his father?????

UHG!!!! Did I mention I am SOOOOO confused!!!!!

Shawn

The Amherst Co Museum and Historical Society provides copies those documents for a fee.

Hi Elaine,

I'm sorry it took so long to reply. Thank you for the Congrats as well :). I'm still working on stuff of course. Seems every time I pick up the research, I find something completely new. This is both exciting and frustrating.

My advice to you is to keep researching. The legwork is where it’s at! Look outside the box and outside the internet. Speaking of the internet, don’t trust anything if it does not have a reference. You can use it as a jump off point to a line of investigation, but don’t rely on it solely (I am still weeding my tree of the results of a happy click finger :).

The library is a good place if you come prepared (I would suggest spending the first day just ooo-ing and ahhhhh-ing). After that pick a certain section of your tree and work on that. If you bring everything you have you could end up like me, surrounded by a carpet of papers and completely overwhelmed.

One more thing. Take a break from your research. Sometimes when you come back to a project after a time you can see the path clearer. Remember, it is not a race. Take your time and enjoy the twist and turns you find on the ride.

Hope that was helpful.

Take care and will see you on the boards :).

Shawn

Thanks for your reply. What makes you doubt that Daniel was the father? Have you considered joining the Tucker Y-DNA project? Several of the Tucker researchers I've been working with online have had a male Tucker take the Y-DNA test, including my first cousin, and the results are helping to separate the many Tucker lines in Virginia. If you Google the Tucker DNA project, I'm part of the Hanover Virginia group, which was not known until our little group began testing. I wonder where you'd end up.

In an effort to try to determine your William and Gustavus's line, I even paid to get Gustavus AR's death certificate. It didn't provide any new info, but I can share the info it had once I get back home if you want it. (I'm out of the country.)

Keep me posted.

I have been to Williams farm on the James River and talked to the descendent of Gustavus's sister Mary Burford. But he does not know either. Very frustrated. Need a break.
Hello All,

I hope this message finds you well. I have learned a lot in these postings during the years. I have used this electronic place not only for reference in my adventure to find my own roots but as inspiration as well - Thank you.

I am writing here now because I have a few questions that I have not found the answers to. I have done the research on my family and found that it is thick in Monacan blood (Beverly's and Pinn's). I can follow the lines to multiple people on the Original Rolls. My questions are - Is there a Blood Quantum for the Monacans? Who would I contact if I do decide (or eligible) for enrollment (or even if I can)? What type of paperwork (forms and the like or documentation) needs to be done/gathered before a trip to Amherst?

Thank you for your time.
Shawn
Hi, I posted a query about this on the Amherst Museum and Historical Society Facebook page and Holly, the director, gave this answer:

William Cabell surveyed 188 acres for Nicholas Neal on Feb 8, 1753, in Dutch Thoroughfare in branches of the Rockfish River (now Nelson County); on Feb 3, he surveyed 247 acres for the same Nicholas Neal on the branches of the Rockfish river adjacent to Jonothan Snyder and Captain Nevil; on Feb 10, Cabell surveyed 350 acres for Neal, on Glady Creek on the south side of the Rockfish. From this it would appear that the Dutch Thoroughfare was somewhere near the Rockfish, Glady [Gleady], and lands surveyed for Snyder and Nevil (but not necessarily patented). Hope this helps some!

Beverly/Hughes Marriage Lookup

I have been searching on ancestery.com database for a marriage record for my great great great grandparents Reuben Hughes and Delilah Hughes. Their daughter Mildred married Thomas Giles of Roseland. I found them (Delilah and Reuben)in the 1880 census living in South River, Augusta County, Va. Reuben was born in Nelson County in either 1847 or 1857 and Delilah was born in 1857 in Nelson or Amherst. They were married either in Amherst or Nelson County courthouse around 1874. I was told her last name was Beverly and that her father was Delaware Beverly. Can someone please help me find their marriage record and the information on their marriage record and Delilah last name and her parents? Also Delilah and Reuben disappear after 1883, in the 1900 census their children are living with their oldest brother Charles H. Hughes in Massies Mill.

Dutch Thoroughfare Location?

I have seen several deeds that refer to land located in the "Dutch thoroughfare." Dates of these deeds are latter half of 18th century.

Does anyone know where this area is? I am trying to distinguish between families of the same name and don't know if these deeds lie in southern Amherst near Tye river or north Amherst near Rockfish branch.

Any assistance appreciated.

Hi, While I was at the courthouse today I took a look at the marriage records, unfortunately the only James Gordon I found was a James David Gordon who married a Stella Smith in 1944. You may want to try some of the surrounding areas like Nelson Co or Lynchburg for a marriage record. Midge Elliott

Hoping to find information regarding James and Sarah Gordon who lived in Amherst County during the 1930-1950s and probably even before then. They had two children, boy and girl named after each of them. They were an African American family. James Sr. and his daughter were killed during an armed robbery in the mid 1950s. His wife died of diabetes (we have been told) a few years earlier, leaving the son James Jr. an orphan.

My research reveils that Col. Samuel Garland Meredith, born 1832 (son of Samuel Meredith and Margaret Cabell / Braithwaite), had only one wife named Mary Jane Henry, born 1738 (sister Patrick Henry, born 1736) daughter of Col. John Henry, and Sarah Syme Winston.

I've found only 4 chillins from Mary Jane, and Samuel Garland. They were: Mary Mason, Samuel, Jane and Sarah.

Mary Jane Henry / Meredith died in Amherst County, VA in 1819.

Thanks. I assume that the mariage to Jesse Massie should show Caroline E. Davidson versus Caroline S. Davidson. The lineage of Caroline E. Davidson appears to have been:

1 David Davidson (born in Holland; died about 1687 in James City Co., VA) + Sarah Unknown

Part of DNA "Family 10" at www.davidsongenes.org

2 David Davidson, Junior (died about 1756 in Charles City CO., VA) + Unknown wife

3) David Davidson (born about 1715 in James Vity Co., VA; died about 1798 in Buckingham Co., VA) + Mary Giles

4) Giles Davidson (born about 1762 in Buckingham Co., VA; he was present at the surender of Corwallis in Yorktown, VA; he moved to Amherst Co., VA) + Gimina/Jermina Pendleton.

5) Caroline E. Davidson
