I visited my Grandmother's birthplace a few weeks ago (Hixburg is a long way from Vancouver Canada!). Very pretty countryside.
I was able to find both of my great-grandmother's husbands' graves in the Walker's Church graveyard, but there was no sign of her parents (WORLEY), grandparents (MITCHELL), aunts, uncles or siblings. I think that they must have been buried on their own land (and Mary WORLEY's Union soldier husbands were probably not welcome in the family plots!).
At the Library of Virginia I was able to find out that the MITCHELL land was sold to William D. HIX in 1874.
Does anyone have any contacts with present-day Hix families in Hixburg (or a telephone number for the business across from Walker's Church?). I would like to ask them if they have seen any old tombstones in the fields.
Thanks!
