The Gray’s occupied productive farms in Southwest Virginia beginning about 1790. James Gray (c.1765-1849) married Elizabeth Doran in Augusta County, Virginia on June 14, 1787. Before 1870, three of his grandsons by Nelson Gray (1802 – 1867) left Virginia to settle in Sullivan County, Missouri. One brother, Edward Dolan Gray (1842 – 1917) returned to Virginia after a short time in Missouri. Archer Jessee Gray (1836 – 1919) settled west of Milan. A.J. Gray has descendants in the Newtown-Harris area and is buried in the Asbury Cemetery. Robert Emmett Bradley Gray (1846 – 1930) was born in Russell County, Virginia. He was in the 1st VA Cavalry, Co. D during the Civil War and saw considerable action. R.E.B. established a farm east of Browning that is still owned by the family. He married Rebeca Jessee on January 11, 1882 and had sons: Irl and Emmett Emery. Much of the family is buried in the Knifong Cemetery (N40.048000, W-93.112058) adjacent to the “Gray Home Place.” Irl Gray (1887 – 1955) had no children. E.E. Gray (1896 – 1949) married Myrtie Stephenson, daughter of George Washington Stephenson and Elpha Foster of Cora. Emery, WWI artilleryman, had sons: Robert DeVane, George DeVon, Emery DeWayne and Jackie DeLane.

R.D. Gray (1924 – 2009) lived his life on the home place except for WWII service in Asia. He married Mary Hollon and had one daughter, Shirley Ann who has one daughter, Crystal.

G.D. Gray (1926 – 2001) married Bettie McCormick on October 12, 1946. He received the Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Bunker Hill. They had Steven DeVon (b.1947), Paul Emery (1949 – 1991), Charles Robert (b.1952) and Trudy Louise (1956 – 2010). S.D. is the father of Steven DeVon Gray, Jr (Chip), Scot, Jesse Irl and Rosie. Chip lives in Texas and has two children, Ariel and Steven DeVon Gray III. Ariel has a son named Ayden. Scot lives in Browning and has daughters, Morgan and Jordan and son, Wayden. Jesse lives in Meadville with children, Emily and Jack. Rosie has a son Teagan. P.E. Gray had no children. C.R. Gray lives in Virginia and married Dana Elizabeth Kehr (daughter of Owen and Lois Kehr of Meadville) in 1974. They have five children: Jennifer Kienzle, Jessica Moye, Marcus, Gregory and Victoria. Jennifer has sons, Owen and Andrew. Jessica is the mother of Parker and Spencer. Marcus has a daughter named Danielle. Trudy Deihl had two children, Kara and Graig DeVon of Kansas City. Kara has sons, Patrik, Evan and Derryk.

E.D. Gray (b.1929) was born in Browning and married Sylvia C. Plemons of Elkins, West Virginia, in 1952. Their children are Joseph A., born 1955 and VeVica L., born 1966. E.D. retired after 21 years as a Senior Master Sergeant in the Air Force.

J.D. Gray (b.1937) married Evelyn Parrish from Unionville. They live in Blue Springs and have daughters: Julee Meiners, Nancee Rankin and Selinda Webb Ramsey. Selinda is the mother of Jacquelyne, Sydney, Spenser and Veronica. Julee’s children are Hailee, Kellee and Nathan.
