There were quite a few separate/unrelated Davidson/Davison/Davisson families in the Augusta/Botetourt/Rockbridge Co., VA area in the 1700s (maybe as many as SIX....and DNA testing has now shown that there were at least FIVE such unrelated families with that same general surname in the area). It appears that one of the men in Augusta (later Rockbridge) named William Davidson came to Augusta Co., VA from Lancaster Co., PA, sometime around/after 1773 (when he sold his land in PA). That William Davidson was apparently married to a Sarah McCoy in PA, and he married second to the widow Mrs. Elizabeth (Wilson) McCrea in Rockbridge in 1792.

The above William Davidson SEEMS to have been confused by some researchers with the William Davidson who was baptized at Tinkling Springs church in 1747, and who was a son of a Samuel Davidson. That son of Samuel is said to have "become" the Colonel William Davidson who was one of the founders of Buncombe Co., NC (from the same overall Davidson family as the well-known "Import" John Davidson of Beverly Manor, General William Lee Davidson, yet another relative who was named Major William Davidson, "One-eyed" John Davidson, etc., etc.).

Does anyone have a deed (or other) record in the 1770s or so that shows where/when the William Davidson from PA obtained land in Augusta Co., VA? He was apparently a private in the Rev. War, and he served in Captain Hewitt's unit (per a DAR application). Thanks.

Note: None of the above-mentioned William Davidsons should be confused with the unrelated William Davidson who was a grandson of Robert and Ann (Dunlap, apparently) Davidson (ancestors of General Sam Houston and VA Governor John Letcher), nor the unrelated William Davidson who married Martha Baker and who who came to Botetourt Co., VA in 1774 from the Buckingham/Prince Edward Co., VA area (the parents of Rev. Andrew Baker Davidson).
