John MILLER's grant for 487 acres on Jackson's River is in the Library of Virginia, reel 34, grant number 685. I took a copy to a surveyor and had him plot the property description on his firm's CAD system and found that it did not close by 245 feet. Not bad since now they use lasers and computers and back then they used chains, compasses and transits. Also, it did not contain 487 acres, it had 511 acres! I now have a plat of this grant and hope to be able to locate it. It is a long skinny parcel, almost 2 1/2 miles long; the last side is 788 poles long and a pole is 16 1/2 feet; so 13,002 feet... Captain John Miller's fort should have been somewhere on this parcel. The fort was built in 1756 and the grant was from 1760 but it took years to get a grant.
